This is not an old fancy steakhouse that you will see your grandparents at on a Friday at 4 pm... it's a relic bar with lots of stuff on the wall.. (did not go into the dining room) I Love the atmosphere though... A bar with two levels that makes it unique.. The staff was great... Guessing Becky is owner or manager.. she knows how to make you feel welcome and obviously has plenty of knowledge on how to run a bar and restaurant.. yep, just met her mom who is training to help with their St. Paddy's Day Celebration and has done every aspect of The Restaurant Industry... I have not had my steak yet, but I'm already impressed... I'll take a pic and you can decide... They play great 80's music and if your lucky, Becky will belt out a lyric...

The Blackhawk is classic Wisconsin. Is it a Dive Bar or is it a Supper Club? It's definitely a 'locals' time warp watering-hole smack dab in Downtown Prairie with a 2:30 A.M. curtain call. Yep, the place is unique and surprises the hell out of those expecting something different! You wont find what your looking for, unless it's some dark old school drinkin' & eatin'. The unsuspecting out-of-towner couldn't be more obvious than a 'Deer in Headlights'! Fortunately the natives are friendly and the bartenders will hook you up with a classic 'Old Fashioned' of epic proportions. A kick-ass example of Wisconsin's official cocktail. The vintage bar itself is the attraction; probably a mile and a half long and meanders more than the Mississippi River. An obvious exaggeration but actually depicts what this place is all about...a non-stop adventure that offers the classic Supper Club Trifecta; strong cocktails, sassy service and a tender meaty slab of Prime Rib. The place is lost in time; the Blackhawk thrives on that.

Do not be fooled by this sign. They only take cash. Luckily... they have an ATM! ($3 fee, of course).

The quality and quantity was outstanding. Apparently Saturday night is the Prime Rib special and although I've not tried it, if this sandwich is any indication of the quality, I'll be back. I've been coming here for years; it's a wonderful bar/restaurant out in the sticks with an incredible view and atmosphere. The outside deck is a great place to gather with friends over a beer or old fashioned. The service is fast, friendly and efficient. My order was taken quickly and when the food came out it was piping hot. Good selection of beers included several quality non-alcoholic beers. I've had the pizza in the past and it's delicious. If you haven't come here to eat, you need to check this place out; you won't be disappointed. I highly recommend Norwegian Hollow Hideaway for food and/or drinks. It's a great ride in the UTV.

Our party tried a shaved beef sandwich, a Philly cheese steak sandwich, and a New England fish sandwich. All sandwiches were large, fresh, and full of flavor. Very nice to see. Our server was great, too. A+++

The menu was quite a bit more extensive than I expected with lots of offerings for any taste. I settled on the fried broccoli and cheese bites and a chicken parm sandwich. Both of them knocked it out of the park. More places need broccoli and cheese bites. These ROCKED. The chicken parm sandwich was basic in nature but is exactly what I wanted from it. The best part? The bits of burnt mozz really underneath the sandwich for an added crunch. The service was everything you could have asked for. Quick, friendly. You name it. Glad to have made the decision to stop here a few weeks ago, and would absolutely recommend to anybody in the area.

Napkins are paper-towels off the roll, when asked for additional napkins we were given a stack of cocktail napkins. Had to ask for silverware and the plastic glasses all smelled like bleach. Only one person appeared to be working both the bar and table area, service was a little bit on the slow side, but the gentleman was polite and accommodating. Cheese Curds were good, nothing spectacular and the quantity received was on the small side compared to what you might get at other establishments. They were out of tortillas so there were no wrap options. For a Saturday, not sure how they could run out already by lunch time. Sunday, dinner? Maybe??? I could understand, but going into a weekend? How is your kitchen not fully stocked? Main meals were hearty and good (burger & cheese stake), but again, nothing really special. All in all the food was nothing out of the ordinary and the place is just basic.

So, why the low rating, you might ask. Well, as much as I loved the decor and vibe, the service and food just wasn't there. Trust me, I so wanted to walk away with that warm and fuzzy, but instead it was cold and "Meh." It was about 1 p.m. on a Wednesday afternoon. When my group first arrived it was pretty empty. Maybe 6 other people tops in the entire place. There was 8 of us, and we went into the back room where we could eat and also have a meeting. Ideal, right? Well the server (also the bartender), was nice enough, but she really didn't know the menu very well, and it's pretty simple. Nevertheless, we ordered drinks, then we were served said drinks in a timely fashion, and then ordered food. All good so far! The glitch? Our meals were piece mailed to us, if you will. A couple individual appetizers here, then one person would get his burger, then another. At one point about 5 of the 8 of us had completely finished our meals when the last 3 just got theirs. I'm sorry, but that's NOT how it's done. It's not cool! I don't think it was the server's fault, but the cook just didn't know how to multitask I guess. This is common restaurant style cooking, everyone gets their food roughly at the same time. That's why it's referred to as "Sharing a Meal." Now that nice young lady tried, but she could have easily sold me a second bloody marry, and almost all of my eating mates' beers were empty and she never once asked if we wanted another round. In addition to not satisfying the customer, that actually cost the owner money. The food? Pedestrian! I'm sorry, I know, I know. How dare I? Look, I'm new to Wisconsin, so all I have to go buy is what I know. And I know that I recently fell in love with the burger chain Culver's. Those burgers are the bomb! And they're "Fast Food." So surely a cool Sparta sports bar with amazing ambiance can match a fast food burger joint, right? Wa wa wa, wrong! I had a patty melt and it was small and dare I say, boring, and a little dry. Once again, I wanted so badly to love this joint, but they let me down. Maybe it was an off day? I hope so, because if they're enjoying the limited options this cool little town has and just mailing it in, that's not cool either. Nevertheless, you be the judge. Hopefully you'll have a better experience than we did. Cheers!
