My first experience in the Birdcage was back in 2000, when it was still a cinema, and in my youthful foolishness I thought "Dude, Where's My Car?" was a valid way to spend $12. Thankfully since then the cinema has closed and the old theatres have been gutted, removing any material that may possibly be contaminated with that terrible tripe.
Older and hopefully wiser, I was glad to discover the Birdcage had become a fantastic performing arts venue. The tiered floor from the old cinema days means that the audience gets a pretty good view of proceedings (although this would have been even better had the stage been slightly elevated).
The space had been configured primarily for circus shows, which opened up the opportunity for a range of shows to come and perform. Down stairs was a bar, although I mainly rushed past in an effort to get to the next performance.
As the fringe dew to a close, it was with a certain sadness that I washed the Owl stamp off the back of my hand. read more
