He is passionate about furthering avian care and medicine and he is one of the most knowledgeable people in the country about birds. He also has one of the best veterinary x-ray machines in the country, which solved a misdiagnosis from our former vet. That's why his prices are so high. After my cockatiel suffered a head injury from a dog bite, I was absolutely terrified, but Dr. Nemetz was incredibly attentive, compassionate, and thorough from the very beginning. He carefully addressed her wound and monitored her closely, and it honestly amazed me how quickly it closed up. What meant even more to me was how understanding and accommodating he was when I shared that the cost was starting to become financially overwhelming. He worked with me so I could bring her in twice a day instead of paying for overnight care, which made a huge difference and showed genuine care for both my bird and my situation. Dr. Nemetz is here for the birds. And thank god he is - I am certain he saved my parakeet's life. He is very direct and abrupt in his approach which may be off putting to some - but he was amazing and gentle with my bird. The bird is his patient after all, not the owner. He is extremely knowledgeable, and there is a cost associated with that. And justifiably so. For those who want to understand the costs and prepare - it is not cheap. A visit and xray with medication for my little guy was just over $1,000.00. Expect to spend that much for a visit especially if you will need an xray or prescriptions. It's a beautiful facility, clean, state of the art, and you are receiving care from a world-class avian vet. I had visited other vets, even those that see birds, and thought I was going to have to put my little guy down. I visited Dr. Nemetz as a last shot - and my bird is now seemingly on the mend! This review is focused on the customer service, not the veterinarian himself. I called Dr. Nemetz's office after being referred to him and explained that my bird had a broken wing (humerus). The referring office had already taken X-rays, so I asked if they had received them. Instead of checking, the receptionist simply told me that it would cost $300 to see the vet and that it would take over 24 hours just to verify if they had received the email. I was frustrated and saddened by the lack of care and urgency, especially since my bird was in pain and needed to be seen as soon as possible. I tried to remain polite, but I was met with little empathy. She also mentioned that the doctor was fully booked, which I understand, but the overall approach felt cold and dismissive. Unfortunately, having staff who are insensitive and show little concern for urgent cases reflects poorly on the practice. This bird clinic is amazing, I got my bird from magnolia bird farms and wanted to get Little Mochi checked up cause I knew something was wrong. Dr. Nemetz was super amazing with Mochi and discovered that Mochi was sick and needed meds and was very thorough with how to give the meds, the dosage and even the sickness it self. This is a sad day. 22 years ago I found a sick very young mourning dove in my back yard. I was referred to Dr Nemetz. In his care Jesse regained his health and thrived. Over the next 22 years Dr. Nemetz provided outstanding care which included 3 (my wife says 4) lifesaving surgeries. As Jesse hit his senior years Dr. Nemetz proscribed medications that allowed Jesse to achieve super senior longevity (a prior dove patient of the Dr. made 13). Well today Jesse passed away peacefully. If you haven't guessed we heartily recommend Dr. Nemetz if you have a feathered friend as a pet. read more

Took in my baby cockatiel my boyfriend and I recently got from another bird shop and Dr. Nemetz was very informative and helpful on how to properly care for our bird Bobo and how to give her a proper diet. He even recommended Bird Stuff just across the clinic about the various pellet foods. He even called our bird our "little kid", to which I thought was super cute. Bobo turned out healthy for her 1st health check. Although expensive, it is worth the quality treatment and care. Aside from this, one of my birds of 14 years who is also a cockatiel, passed away recently as of 12/15/2022. So, it wasnt a great pre-Christmas week to be honest. My heart was broken as he was my 1st imprint. I miss him terribly.. His name is Cloudy and I wanted to get him cremated so could put the ashes in two different necklaces: one for my parents and one for myself. Im still grieving right now, but the cremation package was worth getting and on top of that the staff at Bird Clinic is very kind and generous to help me go through my grieving phase. I wish I had listened to the reviews everywhere honestly. The doctor and I got into a dispute and I was called a jerk and dealing in bad faith. I was offering to pay the doctor for the work that he was supposed to do not the add ons that were put onto my invoice. I called beforehand to get a rough estimate and was told the amount. When I got the bill back he wanted to run unnecessary test after saying my bird is healthy but needed a better diet. I'm very disappointed when i told him I could not pay he insisted that I did and felt very off putting as a customer in that situation. We have been seeing Dr. Nemetz for over 6 years now, I've lost count! For the reviews stating he is blunt or is over priced- He "is" blunt, he actually told me last year that I'm feeding my parrot too many nuts and therefore his lipid count was elevated. I took his diet advice and found out today that his levels are finally within range. If my vet isn't blunt with me and telling me what I'm doing wrong/ how to improve my pets health, I don't want that vet. It's shocking how many reviews are upset by his prices. It's an exotic animal; not a dog. His services can be pricey, but he is the only avian vet in the area that soles specializes with the parrot species. You get what you pay for. Seeing a generalized veterinarian who treats all animals is not comparable to a vet who specializes in clinical avian medicine. Anyways, he is fantastic and well trusted by us and my 12 year old Senegal. He is a walking book of knowledge and loves to educate his patients which I appreciate. I'm very confused on why this clinic has a 4 star rating and very concerned that this guy is a "doctor. This guy only cares about taking your money. Does not care at all about the bird. Our bird was taken to him after a nasty unfortunate accident with one of our dogs. This being our first bird we have no other idea or something to compare the situation to. I will admit that the condition was bad and when he was taken in, he did nothing but to try to pump fluids. This guy kept on treating him only for shock! Completely disregarded that there were puncture wounds on the bird. Kept saying that the bird was too in shock to even take xrays. He wanted to keep the bird for 48 hours for "observation", when everyone knows that after business hours there's no one in the facility to take care of the pets. Not only was the care subpar, this charlatan has some outrageous price. What kind of doctor charges to set up a new patient chart?? Or charges per injection?? Don't believe me? I'm posting the estimate when he was trying to take advantage of the situation and what we paid after declining hospitalization. Unfortunately, our bird didn't make it. Fair warning: This is the nearest bird clinic to me. With a 4 star review, (having not read the reviews) I thought, it wouldn't be too expensive.. I called AHEAD of time and TWICE the receptionist told me the basic checkup would be $180. Turns out my parrot required VITAMIN A INJECTIONS. OK. Makes sense. Vet was extremely kind. Knew what he was talking about, spent enough time with us, funny, all of it. HOWEVER, I DIDNT THINK ALL THAT WOULD COST ME! $529 later, I WAS LITERALLY THROWN ABACK. First thing I asked the receptionist was HOW & WHY did the initial consultation go from $180 to $199. Her DELAYED response (basically): NEW YEAR, NEW PRICES. MIIND YOU, I spoke to her at the end of DEC & again in JAN. Than she QUICKLY went down the list of charges (per my request) and all I remember is $70 something for Dr injecting first injection and $16 for hazardous waste WHICH DRUMROLL PLEASE was for the syringe disposal the Dr used for the injection. The rest is history. She attempted to make it a little better by saying that the Dr had given me a "discount" for IDK what. At that point, my brain had logged off because as MUCH AS I DISPUTE THINGS that I KNOW and feel are unfair, I knew I had lost this one. You have no choice but to pay AND ALL OF IT UPFRONT because it's a PRIVATE CLINIC and he charges what he wants. Thank you for your patience DR, but never again. I had an African Grey baby with severe calcium deficiency. I took her to our Las Vegas supposed avian specialist and he amputed her toes. She was still declining. I heard about Dr. N and hopped on a plane and headed to his office at his first available appt. He kept our baby for over a month with no guarantees. He put her back in an incubator and gave her necessary injections and calcium treatments. He saved our baby. read more

This business tried swindling me to pay more money when I was taking my bird for a checkup. I called before coming in to get am estimate on how much the bill would be and was told roughly $100-200 dollars. The vet did everything he needed to do and once I was ready to pay, they hand me the invoice and once I looked at it, they wanted me to pay $950. I informed the girl that worked in the front I cant pay that is there any way we can do payments or anything else. She told me they are unable to do payments and understandably so; I told her there is no way that I could pay for it either way and so the doctor go on the phone after he left and almost felt like a car salesman trying to sell me on getting these extra tests. I love my bird and would do anything but some of the tests he was requesting was him just trying to make more money. When I told him as well that I could not afford it he still pushed and after about 20 minutes of back and forth and being told I am dealing in bad faith and a jerk for trying to pull on over on him. I told him I will pay for the work that you did today which was 200 dollars and kept trying to push for the work that he did which was just a simple checkup he was so mad that he told me to get out and did not want my money. I am not a confrontational person in any way and this was one of the first times I pushed back against something I did not agree with and I still stand by everything. The way the doctor handled that whole situation was beyond poor and very childish from such a business owner. I am very disappointed and frustrated by what happened and suggest going elsewhere. But the tip off was seeing a pen prick of blood surfacing on his wing feathers later in the morning. The location were my husband adopted Humphrey was closed , but I came across The Bird Clinic online. At this this time they stated they were by appointment only. But thank goodness they were able to take us in. I am grateful for this doctor and finding him. He gave us peace of mind and great knowledge on how to further benefit our baby . Absolutely the best Doctor for all birds issues! Been going to The Bird Clinic for many many years. The costs are in the higher bracket, but as someone on yelp said birds are an exotic animal. And the cost is high when you have to have specialists help your pet! I spent several thousands of dollars on my family dog that needed 2 very expensive tests done to determine what needs to be done to help him! I would do what ever I need to do to make any of my animals have a healthy comfortable active life. This is what you have to give thought to when thinking of getting an animal! Sadly this vet is just a bad egg. Pun intended. I only wish I had read the Yelp reviews prior but when you're worried about your bird, you get in wherever you can. I would like to spare you a trip and a load of cash. I walked out the door only paying $200 for an exam (could have been so much worse if I hadn't listened to my instinct on this guy) Vet told me that my bird was overweight (told me 120g's)and calcium deficient. This scared me as she has laid eggs and I always worry about being egg bound. He said she needed a $480 X-ray, and depending on the outcome, egg removal surgery. Mind you, by the time I got here, she was acting totally normal again so I turned down his offer. Had I been more fearful, I would have done it and unnecessarily had her put to sleep for a procedure she didn't need. Side note: while he is speaking to me, he has my bird in his hand and is gesturing around as she flails panicky. That all occurred last week. Today I got her into Greek & assoc In Yorba Linda just to see what to do about her being overweight. Turns out the physical exam shows she is not overweight and they weighed her at 112g's. Also said there is no reason for me to think she is calcium deficient based on her diet. I paid $75 for exam AND leg band removal. So happy for a great outcome but wouldn't trust Dr Nemetz with my birds as he is more into making money than being of service to the pets we love so much. He is a wealth of knowledge -if you take that as arrogance than you should probably be looking in the mirror. He is a one man show! Nemetz is there for your bird! His prices are up there but when you take on a pet, you take on a financial responsibility. I brought my parakeet in today because he has been sick for a month. The Doctor was so much help. I found Dr. Nemetz just under 2 years ago and am grateful every day to this man and his knowledge, caring and innovation. He has saved Louisa's life 3 times - the first in taking her as a referral from a vet who knew enough to know he was more of an expert than she was- first identifying vascular disease and putting her on a life saving protocol, and again when diagnosed a tumor on her testicle...yes, she is a male.... and again when foreign bodies were ingested- thought I had bird proofed her cage, think again! We bring all 6 of our poicephalus flock here, 3 are now on heart meds and the others all showed vast improvement in their bloodwork by changing to the pelleted diet he recommended. I feel really good about having them in his care. I drive down from LA every month to pick up the heart meds he compounds for us (from human pills we order and have sent there). Louisa's tumor was treated with LUpron shots, human medication that he uses for birds and has shown success many times over. He also is called upon to teach and lecture at avian veterinary conferences. We have a leader in the field here in Southern California - I understand there are clients who have flown in for surgeries for their treasured birds so I have it easy driving down from LA! We are truly grateful for Dr. Nemetz' protocols and true, deep passion for avian medicine - as well as how thoroughly and patiently he works to educate us. Ive said it a few times.. yet I will say again because I believe in Dr. Nemetz and his bird practice. I have spent thousands on all my parrots and every single penny is worth it. Dr. Nemetz is an avian specialist.. this is the key word I feel most people are forgetting.. He is a "Specialist" therefore you can expect to pay more, and receive better care. I have been going to him with my 5 parrots for over 18 years. He is nothing short of amazing. He is the sole reason I do not leave California. He has NEVER spoke to me in a condescending manner and if he ever did it is because he is concerned with me and possibly a bad habit that im doing to HARM my parrots life.. i.e. feeding snacks. etc.. I truly feel that he is misunderstood. This man is not our friend, this man is our veterinarian.. there are no discounts, he does charge for everything.. but this is a business first and foremost. He genuinely cares about his avian patients and strives for the best, be they in medication, digital x-rays, endoscopic surgery, whatever.. He has personally saved 2 of my parrots lives thorough his "Medication" which I picked up at Costco! and he compounds the pills and creates heart meds for both of my parrots..This is heart medication that humans take! There is No "special" recipe.. these are PRESCRIPTION medications he personally compounds for my parrots to extend their lives. It is legit heart meds that we get prescribed and pick up at Costco. all the other fees are just basic business practices that all doctors charge for but do not tell you.. and this man is an open book.. Mandy at the front is AMAZING! She's always in a good mood and always gives me updates on my babies if they are spending the day with them. She is a true asset to this practice as well. He is truly a one of a kind avian Doctor with the upmost knowledge on avian health. If you take your parrots health seriously -he is the only avian veterinarian to go to.. Dr. Niemetz was fantastic. I took our office pet (from my old job) here many times. Piccolo was comfortable with this doctor and he was very knowledgeable. If I had a bird I would use this vet again. He knew a lot about the particular breed of bird brought to him (Military Macaw) and you can tell he was passionate about his job. The only thing I didn't particularly like was his suggestion to cut the identification band off the birds foot. In hindsight I wish I didn't accept his suggestion and I wish I had slept on it because I would not have cut it off if I had to do this over in the future. read more

I had a wonderful experience seeing Dr. Nemetz. He is sharp, clearly a leader in his field and takes his profession very seriously. After consulting 2 other DVMs about my budgie's health problem with diagnosis TBD, I was referred to Dr. Nemetz. Going to The Bird Clinic vs. going to another clinic that sometimes treats birds was like the difference between night and day. He determined that my girl is actually a boy (!) and that he has testicular tumors. Dr. Nemetz was able to administer an injection of Lupron at his hospital which he explained has an 85% success rate in sending these types of tumors into remission. He mentioned he has to obtain Lupron from a human hospital & divide it into bird-sized portions, so I believe this is a treatment I could not have gotten at just any clinic! He is a wealth of knowledge and spoke with me at length about the details of the treatment as well as a more ideal diet for my bird's needs. I really appreciate that he was also willing to advise on the day-to-day factors to help ensure long-term health for my bird. After spending alot of money at other vets, which by the way totaled more total than I spent with Dr Nemetz, I was finally referred to him by another avian specialist because she needed to have a hystorectomy due to hormonal issues with caused egg binding more than once. Dr Nemetz took the time to explain exactly what he would be doing as well as the risks involved. He also took the time to be sure she was in good health prior to performing the surgery to insure the best chance of success. I had been looking for a real avian vet for over 5 years and could only find vets who advertised that they took care of birds, too. I found out that I knew more about what a parakeet's poop should look like than they did. My parakeet, Skye, would still be here today had I found Dr. Nemetz. He is direct in his approach, which I believe some find off-putting, but he is very knowledgeable. He has helped me learn more about my bird, what is healthy to eat, and how to keep her healthy so she can live a long life. My girl has lost weight and is active and happy again. If you are willing to listen and put your ego aside for the health of your avian friend, this is the vet to visit. Yes, the first encounter is pricey but the subsequent follow ups are not. You do NOT want to take your birds anywhere else! We in SoCal are so fortunate to live so close to one of, if not THE best avian vets in the country.  Dr. Nemetz has been at the forefront and led advancements in avian medicine for decades. You can find a tremendous amount of info online about that so I'll let you see that for yourself. I've been taking my birds to Dr. N. for over 15 years.  He provides the highest level of care, diagnostics, and has access to the most advanced technology. Other vets that treat birds can't even come close to what he can do and I've met a few that can even misdiagnose your bird due to lack of expertise and that can be deadly. Not only does Dr. N. have the credentials, but he genuinely cares about the health of your birds. Now, he may not have the best bedside manner and can be a bit brash, but never mean. He is nice, just straightforward and honest. So if you're sensitive about that, I'd sincerely recommend putting that aside for the well being of your birds. He will not do you wrong. Dr. N's prices are fair for what he does.  I don't think anyone would want to go to the cheapest doctor for their own care, and I certainly wouldn't for my birds.  I can tell you from personal experience that his top priority is the health of your birds, and NOT money.  There are many times where he could have done tons of additional tests and diagnostics but took the sensible, affordable route when it made sense.  Medical care is expensive folks, you just feel it more when insurance isn't covering it. He makes stuff up, just to charge you! Get a second opinion before you agree to anything.

I have heard such great things about the Bird Clinic. I only wish I could have gotten in to see the doctor. I called for an appointment for our little parakeet that's very sick. I left a message and someone called me back right away. She said there were two appointments available on the upcoming Monday and I told her I need to check with my Mom (it's her bird) and I called back in about five minutes and left a voice mail message saying I would like to confirm one of the appointments and to please call me back to confirm. Never heard a work even after leaving a second voice mail message. When I called on Monday asking for an appointment, I was told that they always respond to messages (obviously not since I left two voice mail messages), she blatantly lied. Now they don't have any appointments for the entire month and now I'm left with finding another bird expect before my bird dies. Not good service at all!!! read more

Dr. Nemetz knows what's up when it comes to birds. Our Yellow Nape Amazon and African Grey are in such good hands with him. He clearly cares about birds and this is much more than a business operation. The facility is top notch, clean, and Mandy is friendly and helpful, always. My sad experience with Nemetz is that I had a seriously injured canary (approx. 1 year old), who suffered over three days and died. Nemetz wasn't available to immediately see my canary (broken leg)) and when he did have time to see her, the charges ran over $800. Furthermore, the clinic is hot and stuffy, and you have to wear a mask. I felt ill listening to his "advice", which I followed to the best of my ability. Be careful leaving the parking lot, the traffic is dangerous and no pet is worth a car accident! read more
