There are many varieties to see but depending on your interest in flowers, you may only take about 30 mins to walk around. Great, beautiful escape from the hustle and bustle! I loved walking or jogging here as a student whenever I had some free time and wanted to get away. I usually came during the spring time, so not sure how the place looks during other seasons, but in the spring there would always be so many flowers! I enjoyed walking between the rows and looking at all the funny and creative names for the flowers. Do have to note, the place isn't as big as I'd originally thought the first time I came here. Excellent rose garden and it is FREE! I had heard of the Berkeley Rose Garden before and was determined to check it out since it's only 15 mins drive from me. Came with a hiking group in February and left a little disappointed b/c there was no roses in sight. Apparently we were too early. So I came again this past weekend in mid-June and the roses were in full bloom. Although some of them started to look a bit sad with colors fading away so I suppose May would be the perfect month to check this place out. Regardless I had a relaxing Sunday afternoon looking at all the flowers here. There were deff great varieties. I was amazed by some of their names: bewitched, taboo, etc. Wow, those are some awesome names! And the roses here deff lived up to their names. They were so beautiful and smelt great, too! All in all, the Berkeley Rose Garden is a cool spot that should not be missed. I'll deff come back next year! And you should, too! read more

Weekly Rose garden to be appreciated needs to be visited by botanists and rose enthusiasts because the common people like me - of course it beautiful, unique with great names and all but it is a rose garden. However the park across from the said rose garden with its maze of secret stairs and slips will keep anyone happy for hours. read more

Went here to go on adventures in Berkeley!! When I looked this place up in Google, I thought to myself wooooow! How can a place like this look so beautiful? So, we went and thank goodness the flowers are still in season. Every step i took down the stairs i was amazed by the flowers. Each bush of flowers had names to it like "love". Its a really cute place to take pictues at or to sit down and talk with your friends and family. Maybe a good place to take pictures for prom too!! The only rose garden I know with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. As of May 19, 2021 , roses were about 80% in bloom. Since it's multi layered, it's not stroller / wheelchair friendly. Street parking on Euclid Ave available. It's a nice place to take graduation/ wedding/ engagement photos when the roses are in bloom. Good place to take kids and teach them different names of the roses , colors , butterflies, bees , anything and everything about the nature. This rose garden is not as big as San Jose Municipal Rose Garden , however it sure is really beautiful and cozy. read more

An absolutely gorgeous place!! I came to the rose garden on a whim to celebrate the end of finals and my 21st birthday with one of my friends, who presented me with a beautiful bottle of rosé here too. So fitting! I've only ever heard tales from classmates about the Berkeley Rose Garden, and it's totally worth a visit. Though it's quite small (you'd probably be able to take a look at all the roses within half an hour), it's a beautiful place to take pictures, spend some time with loved ones, and get a picturesque view of the bay at the very top of the rose garden before entering! The pictures attached down below do not do the subjects justice. A bonus feature is that every row of roses has a multitude of rose varieties, each with their own unique (and often really cute) names, such as "Love" or "Sexy Rexy"! Something I found that was also quite nice was that there are several outdoor sports / park locations right next to the rose garden. Its neighbors are several tennis courts, and right across the street are a playground and a very recently repainted basketball court. There are plenty of different hiking trails, winding staircases and bridges across still-flowing streams of water, and the crisp sound of birds all around. It's an all around wonderful area to visit, and it's a wonderful place for families. Though it's not as extensive or as fascinating as the Berkeley Botanical Gardens farther up in the hills, the rose garden is still a hidden gem. A beautiful, peaceful spot located in the Berkeley hills. This is one of my favorite nearby places to escape the city and spend some time in nature. The rows and rows of rosebuds offer numerous colors and varieties to take in. Wander through the gardens and take in all the beauty! During covid, this spot is noticeably busier. I visited on a weeknight and found the gardens quite busy. Everyone is trying to find an outdoor space to escape their homes and get some fresh air! You can still find benches to sit on and catch up with friends. If you want more space to yourself, try to visit at off-hours. I'd recommend visiting the gardens at different times throughout the year to witness the different stages of growth and bloom! Unfortunately, this place is not dog-friendly. Dogs are not allowed inside the rose garden. read more

I'm sure this place is gorgeous when in bloom and fully open, but when I visited on March 19th there were only a few roses on 1 rose bush out of the whole garden. Construction was also still going on and the lower half was completely closed off- the garden's website mentioned closures til Dec 2020, but clearly work is still being done. There are bare bones bathrooms for use by the tennis courts and parking was easy (maybe because there was not much to see). Street parking is available right across the entrance to the garden. read more

For the entire hour that i was there, in the middle of the day, the cleaning person was relentlessly blowing dust and dirt into the air, absolutely preventing people from approaching the roses. I used to find this boring, but it's more of a mindful activity to peruse the flowers and read about them. For that, they get the five stars. They also have a seating area where you can look out over the top of the garden which is nice too. This isn't a "destination" spot for me, but when in the area, I can see myself parking and ambling through the garden. read more

I've known about the garden since I was a wee Cal undergrad back in the Stone Age, so I already knew that it sure gets purty here between late spring and early summer when most of the roses are in full bloom. That's why I had the bright idea of Jamie W. and me walking up here from the corner of Shattuck and Rose where the bus dropped us off. It was the middle of May, and the sun was out. Berkeley Rose Garden is great for the variety of beautiful flowers, convenient parking, nearby Codornices Park, and nice view of the sunset over the bay. For staying longer, I wish there were some benches for sitting there and reading a book or chatting with whoever you bring with you, but they do have a table near the entrance. It's a stadium shape down a hill, so you get a nice short bit of exercise going back up. They have a nice short trail leading away from the roses by ivy and trees. Free street parking is convenient. Great photo opportunities of the roses and people in this beautiful setting. I avoid going there close to graduation dates because of the sheer number of high school kids doing photos then. read more

Very beautiful garden. Simple but they have variety of roses. Parking is hard to find (street parking only). Also, is downhill so wear comfortable shoes. The pathway are not paved so watch your steps. Last time I was here, I was with little kids and my family. The kids had to almost tripped a few times. Not exactly wheelchair friendly. What's the opposite of a parklet? The Berkeley Rose Garden. Set like an amphitheater into the North Berkeley hills, the garden is a beautiful oasis. From the top, outside the gates, people gather to watch the changing skies over the San Francisco Bay: Clouds and fog roll in to blanket Mt. Tam, the sun sinks, Jesus rays hit the water, the bay sparkles. You needn't really go further than this. If you choose to actually experience the gardens know that dogs aren't allowed and that the grounds are hilly and uneven. They are, however, filled with beautiful, well-maintained roses of all varieties. The space is immaculate and free of charge. There's seating spread throughout the garden, but the sun leaves here more quickly, so plan for that. Whether you linger at the top, traverse the gardens themselves, or sit for a spell amongst the roses you'll likely see a gaggle of people (on the weekends, at least). Not hordes, but enough that it'd be difficult for you to feel alone in the space. Still, it's got a serenity about it that can't be denied. The Rose Garden was constructed partially as a WPA project in the 1930's and its art deco-inspired sign which hangs over the street is a reminder of that. Extend your stay here by crossing Euclid to the park and going for a cardboard ride down the concrete slide. read more

Review #120 - 2018 I've been traveling everywhere to visit as many flower gardens as I possibly can before spring ends so I thought I might as well visit one that's right around my area. After our not-so-happy lunch at Tasty Pot, we decided to head over since it's only about 1.5 miles away. There was very little traffic so we were able to get here in about 15 minutes. We got a really good parking spot too. This is probably one of the very few areas in Berkeley that you don't have to pay for parking so make sure you take advantage of it. The garden is also free of charge. The garden is very nice and well maintained. Although, the roses were still not in full bloom when we showed up, but it was still a nice visit. It's not as big as the Morcom Rose Garden in Oakland, but still worth a visit if you like roses. There's a park across the street so you can enjoy that as well. read more

It's free, it's almost always open (from dusk to dawn) and there are only two rules that you need to follow: no dogs {can you bring cats? No idea!} and don't pick the roses!!! Free parking can be found conveniently along the street and while the gardens are beautiful, it's relatively small, so I'd say plan to spend 30 minutes here tops. From the top of the gardens you have a beautiful view all the way to the ocean, and that starts your nature reward. Enter the gardens (through any of the gates surrounding) and you'll feel like Alice with the flowers singing to you, although this time it's only roses. All varieties, all smells, all colors and they're well labeled! You'll find a variety of raised beds at the top of the gardens and amphitheater raised beds towards the bottom. As a lover of roses (my name sake) I really couldn't get enough of this place. I highly recommend wandering the ivy covered paths along the side of the garden too, this feels more like a secret garden! It won't take long, but it rounds out the experience. And if you need more outdoors after your adventure, there's a lovely park (with playground) across the street. read more

This is a small rose garden hidden in the suburban hills not too far from Cal. Came here in the mid-afternoon with the sister for some sightseeing and relaxing in the area. We came here after seeing that previous Yelpers said that the view of the Peninsula was beautiful. We were blessed with such beautiful weather that day, so we were both without jackets and absolutely beaming just being around the not-in-full-bloom roses. I feel like summer and springtime would be the BEST time to visit the garden. We came in mid-January, so some roses were bloomed, but a majority of the garden was not as colorful as it could've been. The place smelled heavenly, and it was surprisingly deserted when we came on a sunny Saturday afternoon! There were a few people reading their books and enjoying a quiet stroll, but they were all spread out and doing their own thing. There are a few tennis courts at the top of the garden, but the noise is barely audible. The garden is so calming and therapeutic! The setup of the heart of the garden has a Coliseum feel with large steps all the way down to a little creek that runs through the garden. This place is great for an intimate date or meetup with a good friend, without the stuffiness of an indoor restaurant or the confines of a building. Parking is easy, as I parked two streets away and walked over--no problem. My sister found parking on Euclid Ave literally across the street from the garden, so it's absolutely FREE and easy to find. I'd def come back again when the roses are in full bloom though. This garden is totally underrated, or maybe it's just because we came here during the non-bloom season. read more

My parents met as students at Cal. I guess this was one of their special spots cause I remember them bringing me here when I was a little kid. Even though I went to Cal myself...I somehow completely forgot about this place and just recently got reacquainted with this little gem. All I have to say is that it is completely beautiful here on a sunny day. The sunken garden with the sweet smell of roses dancing through the air is a perfectly serene environment for finding inner peace. If you need something a little more stimulating, bring a tennis racket and check out one of their 4 free tennis courts. We visited the rose garden on a nice, warm, Saturday afternoon and we absolutely loved it. She pointed out her favorites, read the names of the roses, I took photos of my girls, took photos of the roses, took photos of my girls with the roses, and simply admired the beautiful beds of vibrant hues. My family and I got lucky on our latest rose garden visit. We arrived early in the morning, so we were able to get a parking space nearby. I remember having to walk a few blocks back and forth to the car last time. You have to enter a gate to get into the garden. That's to keep the deer and other animals out. I shudder to think what damage a herd of deer could do in there! The weather was perfect, cool and overcast. Clearly it was like that for a few days previously, because the flowers weren't wilted. The clouds also make taking pictures easier with nice, diffuse light. The other advantage in coming early is that the place is much less crowded. I think we shared the garden with at most six other people throughout our visit. If you love roses like my mother does, when the flowers are in bloom, this is a magical place. Different varieties of roses as far as the eye can see. Most of them are labeled with a sign, so if you are so inspired, you know what to ask for at your local nursery. I must confess we were confused as to how some varieties received their names. Aisles are plenty wide enough for strollers, but they will have to be carried up and down the steps between levels. Wow, Berkeley AGAIN stumps me with another wonderful gem that I should've visited when I was a student!!! As a Cal student (GO BEARS!), you get tossed a million different things to do with your time in Berkeley. A lot of them involve food in this ever-changing cultural scene. And others involve nature such as the Big C. One of the areas that I totally regret not exploring when I was a student is the Tilden Regional Park area. This place includes sights such as the Little Farm, Botanical Garden, and Lake Anza. When my dad came up this past weekend, I decided to knock one more Berkeley item off my list: the Rose Garden. Though I'm not a HUGE fan of flowers in general, I have a soft spot for roses. The Berkeley Rose Garden is located nearby the cluster of Tilden attractions on Euclid. It's about 10 minutes from the Berkeley campus and a few minutes south of the Botanical Garden. Parking is a bit spotty here especially since most residents have their cars on the street, but on a weekend you should be able to find a spot after a few minutes. Before coming here, one of the biggest deterrents for me not visiting was the price (lol cheap Berkeley student). But just like how the Botanical Garden is free for students, the Rose Garden is free for EVERYONE (as long as you come before nightfall otherwise you'll need permit). So the garden itself is soooo beautiful. Even though it's small, there's a whole bunch of different breeds of roses. I saw so many colors, from white, to orange, to pink. My favorite is always going to be the white rose. I highly recommend this place if you want to take pictures because there's a gazebo, there's a small pond, AND at the top you get a view of the Bay. And if that doesn't entice you enough, there's a tennis court here too. Overall, I'm a mess for not coming here earlier. My dad loved this place, even though we went through it in a few minutes. I give the Rose Garden a "nice-su, you can take your parents here and they'll be happy." My dad can definitely vouch for it. I wouldn't drive all the way here from San Jose to see the garden, but especially if you are a student or if you are in Berkeley, come hither. Have fun and prosper, read more

Love bringing people visiting Berkeley here. Checking the season is important before expecting all the roses to be in full bloom. Just came here the other day (month of May), and everything was blooming. The whole place was extremely fragrant, it smelled lovely. On a clear day the top of the rose garden at street level has an amazing view of across the bay. You can see parts of SF and also across to Mill Valley Area. I like how most of the varieties are labeled - helpful for those looking for new roses to add to their garden but aren't sure what's out there.
