We had already walked all over Winchester, we were on our way to Stonehenge, we were excited and hungry, but also jet lagged and exhausted! Jill brought us to The White Lion joking that, being only 400 years old, it was practically a brand new pub! We came in (mind your head), and were immediately sat down at a big, groaning, family table! Water was served, beers and ciders followed, and then meat pies and fish and chips were ordered all around! This meal was absolutely delicious in the way that only homemade country pub food can be. The cider selection was excellent, and we left refreshed, happy, and ready to take on the rest of our day (mind you, we ALL passed out cold in the van after Stonehenge and on the way back to our hotel)! The red onions were too sharp but everything else was delicious. (Why does anyone use red onion anymore? There are so many better ones.) Hubs had a burger and said he was happy. It had onion jam, which makes everything good even better. Our starter was fried squid, done very well. We really enjoyed this after a long day of walking around the stones.

A spirited 15/20 minute walk from the train station will allow you the opportunity to soak in the local bucolic vistas. The Chapter House is close to the city centre, but on a quiet road and a stone's throw from the Salisbury Cathedral. The in-house restaurant delivers delicious, no fuss, home style meals. I think I had the best rib-eye of my life at The Chapter House and I've had steak in Texas! The complimentary breakfast was also delicious and well presented. The staff go above and beyond to look after guests and instantly made me feel welcomed.

Ox Row Inn is located conveniently in the main central square area, so we also got to see cute bits of the town on our walk there. It was cozy and inviting inside, very "ye olde pub" feeling. The upstairs dining rooms were enchanting looking. We each got a drink and found a table without a reserved sign on it (they had pub trivia starting about an hour and a half after our arrival, but almost all tables were empty but reserved...I am still wrapping my head around the reservation thing at pubs!) and settled in to enjoy our drinks. A cider for my Fella, and a spritzy cocktail for me. Both lovely. We considered staying for trivia, but were just too tired. I started finding myself annoyed at most pubs and restaurants we went to where the mens toilets were on the ground floor, but the womens were up or down a flight of stairs or more. And the womens toilets here are upstairs and well away from the main area. It was so empty upstairs, I almost thought I was in the wrong place, too. We kept getting strange looks from another patron which made us speed up finishing our drinks and leaving. Despite being Americans, we were not being loud or doing anything other than chatting having a drink, but it was really strange and made us a bit uncomfortable. So we downed the rest of our drinks and went back to our hotel. I did like the general feel of this place though and it would likely be a nice place for a meal.

Came in early afternoon for a late lunch to a couple of pints and fish & chips (minus the mushy peas, but garden salad substituted) to four hungry Yanks. The chef was new, but the food was plentiful & well served. The fish was fresh, not frozen, fresh battered & fried in clean oil, as were the thick chips. (The rest of the group got the shoestring potatoes, but still good.) The bartender was occasionally occupied breaking in said new chef, but overall- it turned out well. For me, the bartender mistakenly overcharged me, then realized his mistake and backtracked his mistake- bringing me back a twenty pound note -saying "I'd not feel right if someone had done this to me, so I'm certainly not going to do it to you." So add a large helping of distinct honesty to the basic review. Definitely will be back someday, and relax for another couple of pints, watch the game on the large screen telly(s), and order up a fish & chips again. So, sure, recommended highly by a Yank or four. We visited the Rick Stein restaurant on a short stay in Malborough, as my partner loves seafood…read more (Although I am vegetarian, there were options available, including on the set menu.) There are dining rooms both upstairs and down, the latter behind the small bar area. You enter through the shop: the decor - despite this being an 18th century heritage building - is fresh and modern, with dark wood and pale walls, and selected modern art on the walls. We chose the set menu, 3 courses for £26.95. Our starters were the steamed mussels in cider with spring onion and spinach, and roasted red pepper soup; mains were salmon fishcakes with watercress and the chickpea curry (plus a side of hispi cabbage); and we both had the sunken chocolate cake with clotted cream for pudding. (NB the Welsh rarebit isn't veggie - it's made with anchovies.) My starter and main (soup and curry) were perfectly good - the soup especially so - but not exceptional. It didn't surprise me as Rick Stein - both the chef and restaurant - are really all about seafood. My partner found the mussels superb - fresh, sweet, with just the right amount of sauce. Likewise, the fishcakes were excellent and, although they looked small on arrival, they were actually quite filling, and generous on the salmon. The hispi cabbage proved the perfect accompaniment to both mains. The chocolate cake was smooth and velvety, but not too sweet (think a brownie sort of texture) - and perfect if you like dark chocolate. We chose a 250ml glass each of one of the recommended Sauvignon blancs, which also proved a good choice. Service was excellent throughout, and the young server was very skilled at making us feel at home. Including service, the bill came to £95 for two, which for a fine dining experience was pretty good value. Others certainly think so, as on a wet mid-week evening it was packed (so booking definitely advised). There's parking along the main street outside - not a problem in the evening, but potentially a bit more challenging at lunchtime.
