We must have passed about a thousand cows today while on the way in to Medicine Hat. So, of course I had to be thinking -well, HEY! Steak for dinner. So when I saw The Beefeater I knew it was going to be serious meat. Well, I really know how to pick'em! The Beefeater has been in business over 27 years. It's a family owned operation and the people who work there are like family as well. Nice inside. Not "urban" nice, no, more like iconic nice. They know steak. We ordered well. The service was really good. The salad bar consisted of the green salad you would get in a bag from the grocery store, along with assorted macaroni/potato salads and soup. Basic cheap buffet stuff. The stuffed potato was on par of this price range expectations. $32 for BBQ baby back ribs, ok! Steamed then, the worst chef special bbq I can remember having. If you love prime rib or steak, The Beefeater has the best of both in town in our opinion. Our server was also great, which wasn't always the case in the past. The restaurant was very busy as it is the Holiday season, but our appetizers and meals came in a timely fashion and were spaced out nicely. All meats were cooked as ordered and sides were hot & tender. I believe you get what you pay for and we feel we did. A very good dining experience. read more

A decent steak in an old/fancy style of restaurant. First of all I will say that I enjoyed my meal. My steak was cooked pretty close to the way that I like it and the vegetables I was served were nice. I did opt for the salad bar and it was alright. It had the classic garden and caesar salads as well as a couple of different styles like Greek, grated carrot and raisin, and some others as well. I feel like this place would have been considered fancy and a great meal back when they were my age but I guess I've just been to spoilt. The worst part about this place is the price tag. I definitely would not be willing to pay that price. Alright food, but way overpriced. read more

We eat here semi-regularly, as my husband LOVES their prime rib, which is always excellent. The service is always exceptional. If the review was just based on those two points, it would be an easy 4 stars. Prime-rib - Excellent Yorkshire puddings - Excellent Horseradish - the spiciest I've had outside of pure wasabi powder :D However, if you are ordering ANYTHING other than beef, it's dicey whether it will be acceptable. I don't eat red-meat, so it's tough for me to eat there. *Much of their non-beef fare is drenched in butter, which takes away from the true flavour of the food. E.g., escargot needs some butter, but it doesn't need to be served in a pool of butter, the veggies are sauteed in butter, but are quite fresh and tasty. Be sure to ask for no or less butter when ordering - they're happy to accommodate. *The salad bar is ok, but is missing things like un-marinated salad veggies and cheese. Although, there are several pasta salads, jello, etc. The dill pickles on the salad bar are phenomenally good. The salad bar is $1 extra, but at the price point of the meal, it should be automatically included - it's a little chintzy to charge up $1. * The onion soup is quite good, however, it's not traditional in that there are no proper croutons or gruyere cheese. They do have dried parmesan from a can in a bowl by the soup, along with imitation bacon bits, if that's your thing. * The "prawns" on the appetizer menu are not prawns, but rather cocktail shrimp - like in a shrimp ring or the bag of shrimp you can buy at Costco. At $11 per half dozen, I was expecting a lot better. Also, when we ordered these, they were obviously freezer-burned - the kitchen said that they de-vein on site, but that doesn't mean that they weren't previously frozen. * The pan seared fish - wasn't what I was expecting. It's not a true pan sear, but rather the filets are lightly breaded and friend in butter. * The BC salmon is decent, however, be sure to ask for the chef to poach it or cook it without butter. I've ordered this a number of times and it's 50/50 whether it's cooked properly - but, then again, it's a steakhouse. Their speciality is beef. * I've had ribs there a couple of times and they were good, but slightly over-cooked. * The chicken and salmon Neptunes are high-calorie butter filled and do taste good, but it's hard to live with one's self after indulging. * The apple pie dessert is superb! All in all, it's a good place. The prices for the beef meals are appropriate, however, for the non-beef entrees, I'm left feeling a little cold. Hope this helps! read more

This is a restaurant that is living off it's past success of the 80's and 90's and definetly needs an update. It's time to replace the furniture and the decor as it is well passed it's prime and many chairs are uncomfortable and broken down. The service we have received on our last 3 visits has been less than average. On our last occasion we were seated right behind a booth where our table stuck out past it and I felt like I was eves dropping on that tables conversation. We asked to be moved and were met with less than an enthusiastic response. Funny part is the restaurant was not that busy and they had all the customers lined up on one side of the place in a long row. The meals that are served are average, and the way in which food is prepared is vey inconsistent. Even having 3 people ordering the same meal the variation of the plates was like night and day.....even the doneness ( Med Rare) of the meals varied greatly. I think it's time for this restaurant to consider major updates and changes if they wish to succeed like they had in the past...and real bacon bits in this class of place would be good too... read more

The steak was delicious, service was fantastic and the atmosphere was nice. The only thing I found was ridiculous was the price tag. Ended up paying over $100 for two meals. I come here for a treat every once in a while but if they made the prices more reasonable I would return often. Great place to eat. The outside of the beefeater looks really quite nice. There website says that "The Beefeater Steak House specialize in Prime Rib and the finest cuts of steak." Then you would expect at least that. Not even close, It was the worst prime rib dinner I have ever had. I asked for med rare ad it was served rare to blue. But that is ok if the meat quality is very good but it lacked flavour, was tough and stringy. I think they need to hire a real chef as the one they have is not very skilled. We will never eat at the Medicine Hat Beefeater Steak House again. read more

Best Steak and beef in town period. You pay for what you get and The Beefeater is the place to go for a great meal. Maybe a little pricey but worth every penny once you bite into the prime rib or t-bone they serve up. The gravy is the best I have ever tasted. Ate at the restaurant with 3 others. I had the Prime Rib and my other guests all had steak cooked to perfection. Of course with the salad bar which was fresh and very good. My only advice to people before they go there for supper is to go there starving because they serve really good portions which includes the salad bar. Service at the table was very good. Overall the beef was exceptional. Hands down best beef restaurant in town! read more

A local recommended this place and we hadn't had beef for awhile so we were ready for a great meal. The prime rib was very good but the rest of the meal was common. Stuffed potato had no flavor and the garlic toast that comes with the meal is white bread toasted with garlic powder on it. It's pricey and then they charge an extra dollar for the salad bar! When the entree is $27, I think the salad could come with it. Service was fine. For the money, wouldn't return. read more

We went to The Beefeater as a family (7 of us) to celebrate a graduation. Server was so nice I can't believe it, food was delicious, and the experience was wonderful for our 18 year old grad, which was the most important thing. We will go again and again. We don't go here often because it is expensive and they have raised their prices again. However, when we do go it is always a good dining experience, good service, excellent food, clean, friendly atmosphere. Whoever takes reservations by phone needs to make sure they write them down, was a problem once for us but the manager took care of us immediately. Great place for steak! read more

We bounce around a fair bit when it comes to dinner in the city, but we can always count on having a good meal at the Beefeater. I have never had a bad meal at this place, and I sure can't say that about any other place in town. Steaks are always cooked perfectly, and though the salad bar probably wouldn't win any awards, I'm happy with a couple bowls of their tasty french onion soup for the dollar the salad bar costs. I never turn down an invite to go here for supper. I don't go out for steak a lot, probably eat here about 4-5 times a year, and have been for at least the last 10 years. read more

I live in Medicine Hat and I feel compelled to write about my recent experience at this restaurant. We go here because my mother in law likes this decor and atmosphere, it is what she grew up with and thinks it is a classy joint. I had the "choice center cut medallions of filet" and it was awful. It wasn't choice center cut, it was scraps off the side portion of the filet. I complained immediately, as soon as the plate was put down, and the waitress got the manager (maybe owner) who was simply put, rude. He insisted that they were choice center cut medallions when it was very obvious they were scraps from the trimming. I demonstrated that one triangular piece was actually held together with silverskin, he didn't care and insisted this meal was something it certainly wasn't. The price was choice, $32.00 for a totally sub-standard dish that was not described accurately. I have had enough of the cheap beef this place serves. The new yorks are paper thin and look like the steaks you get at diner lunch specials, just three times the price. I won't ever be going back here. read more
