Finally, my first visit to Hudson's Bay. "The Bay" was founded back in 1670, when I was just a boy. That makes them the oldest company in North America. The department store didn't open until the late 1800's, so I can't imagine where folks bought all their electronics up until then. lol. I spent most of my time here just soaking up the atmosphere and the history. It was tough for me to stay in the moment. They had great clearance prices on furniture and some unique housewares. I liked many of the men's clothes I saw. The problem was that nothing fit me. The store is surprisingly clean. They are (like many) short staffed. The people that were here were very pleasant and patiently answered questions of mine. If I lived in PG, I would make this a frequent stop. There is so much to see and soak up. If I could have given the Hudson's Bay Company 0 stars I would have. My overall impression is that as a store in the 21st century they are a terminal case on their last legs. I remember when I was a child they were always busy and a great place to go shopping, no longer I'm afraid. The reasons for this impression are as follows. I and my new wife got married several weeks ago and we asked people for Sears gift cards. The money generally goes farther, things aren't quite so overpriced, and we have received good customer service there. However, there will always be people who have their reasons so we got around $200 in "The Bay" gift cards. After discussing how best we could spend this money we decided to buy a good Weber portable grill. They were listed on sale for $279 at The Bay. We entered the store and asked at the sales desk if they had any grills at the store. They told us there were no BBQ grills at this location, but we could talk to a supervisor if we wanted to order something. We approached the supervisor and gave her the model # and sale's price. It took her around 10 minutes to find the code number. She then tried to order it for us and spent 10 minutes trying to order it for us unsuccessfully. She then called the store manager to be told that she couldn't order it for us, but we were welcome to go to the online store to order it. I then asked her if we could use our gift cards to order material. She responded, "Oh no, you can't use those gift cards for online purchases for our store." Really? The Hudson's Bay Company actually sells gift cards that have absolutely no money value in their online store. Are there really stores now that refuse to recognize gift cards that their own store sells? If this was the early days of internet sales I might understand, but in the year 2014 this is the death knell for a company. I can understand The Bay in a small city like Prince George not having a wider selection of more selective items, but preventing a customer who has received gift cards for which they have ALREADY received the money for from either ordering or purchasing their material strikes me as utterly pathetic in this day and age. We asked to speak to the store manager and waited approximately 5 minutes. When the store manager came up I explained our situation and got angry that they would not honor gift cards for a purchase we wished to make through their store. Finally she said that if we paid through out credit card for an item to be shipped directly to us and then brought in the receipt we could "symbolically" return the item and then immediately repurchase the item with The Bay gift cards. I'm sorry, but doesn't this seem like a poor way to gain customer satisfaction, appreciation, or to go out of your way to gain future customers?
