Walking in, the space welcomes you with beautiful neutral colors and amazing wood flooring. The upholstered couches flanking the walls are not only gorgeous and unique, but super comfy. Had a great experience here last night! I learned about The Battleground through their Drink Your Values social justice beer project and drove 45 mins from University Heights just to check them out. So happy I made the trip and will definitely be back!! I tried the Si Se Puede Lager and Cherry Street Cream Ale -- both were smooth and easy to drink. We had chips & salsa (roja and verde) as an appetizer, and I had the baja fish taco and pollo tinga taco for my entree. This place is the best Mexican restaurant in Kent hands down. Went here a while back and had their Empanadas de Pescado is amazing! Especially with that peanut-chile sauce. The Pollito Al Tamarindo is a good dish too very filling. As for the tacos, I have only tried Al Pastor, Baja Fish, and Shrimp taco so far and they are great especially the Shrimp taco. Oh and the churros are fresh and great quality. I highly recommend this place if your thinking about trying it out. read more

Once we heard about The Battleground and from other reviews, couldn't wait to go there. When's the last time you had authentic Mexican food. We couldn't have been more pleased to get to this off the beaten path location which we immediately said wow, look at how nice the patio's are and then inside was equally impressed with the bar and dining room. Great art work on the walls. Rosi and Kirk are awesome and the hospitality can't be beat. Are server Sean was awesome. The food was all that we heard, incredible. From the chips and Guaq to the rest of what our group order including the Carnitas, Carne Asada and tacos both steak and pork all served with homemade corn tortillas and don't forget to order Esquites (Mexican street corn) outstanding food. Everything about this new place in Kent is excellent! The decor is warm and atmosphere is friendly, with very helpful servers. The specialty is small "street taco" style tacos, with about eight options available. I had three types (asada steak, baja fish, and portobello), which were all delicious. Also wonderful guacamole and pizole. This authentic Mexican food is not the same as at your typical Mexican restaurant in the area - its better, and our friends from San Diego approved. They also have a great craft beer menu! And this is tied into the Social Justice theme of the restaurant as well, as a portion of proceeds on some of the beers are donated to social justice initiatives. read more

If you love or have never had authentic Mexican food, you must try this place. Everything is made from scratch, they have a Chef (not a cook from the local egg and burger place), fresh ingredients, and a great atmosphere. We have been multiple times, trying something different each time we go. Never disappointed. We take out of towners to the Battleground because we know they will love everything about it as we do. I personally love the fish and coconut shrimp tacos and my absolute favorite is the Crema Poblana soup! Just try it- trust me, you will not be disappointed! The hibiscus margaritas are so refreshing, the churros are like non-other with the warm chocolate dip. Top it all off with a Mexican coffee and you will be back to try more of their menu! They also serve brunch. What a way to kick off a weekend day. I learned to enjoy Mezcal and make tamales! They also have classes on everything from tequila tasting to salsa dancing to making tamales. One last hint- you can buy the ingredients to make Mexican coffee at home, right from the Battleground! They have it all packaged up neatly with detailed directions, It's a favorite in our home. They also have a very extensive and eclectic beer menu. The staff and owners are all very friendly and kind. The artwork and decor are beautiful- the ambiance is always nice, you feel like you are on vacation when you are there. I love the Battleground and I wish them many years of success! read more

Fabulous food for a great price! The tacos are sold individually so you can try different kinds. The salsa was unique and delicious. And I highly recommend a tequila flight. It comes with Smokey crickets and salt. The service was wonderful and atmosphere fun. We will absolutely return. read more

The Battleground has some of the best Mexican food in the region, a fabulous patio and amazing cocktails. Everyone in our group loved their dinner and the desserts were also delicious. Right off the bat when you walk in theres very much of a fun, welcoming vibe. The restaurant has very open seating to where everything is in one room so it can get a little loud. The Menu is small, kinda hard to read and, mostly focuses on drinks. The food however is amazing, very authentic and, delicious. I feel the prices equally out with the quality of the food your getting but not the quantity. It's more of a quality over quantity thing which is totally respectable and appreciated. The staff was very kind and our server Erika was very funny and playful. We got to meet the owner who was very nice and involved with the customers. Overall this is highly recommended on my list and I will definitely be going back for more goodies. read more

It is everything I had hoped it would be--cozy, comfortable, great GREAT food and fun drinks. So much attention has gone into every detail and it shows. Great for plant based and meat eaters! First time here. The outdoor seating area here is wonderful, especially during COVID. Lots of room, great distancing, and nicely put together. The food was a mixed bag. They were out of two of the tacos on the menu, so we couldn't try them. Asked for very little cilantro on mine, and ended up scraping off around a tablespoon of cilantro. Otherwise the tacos were good. Dessert was...less impressive. Ordered a chocolate tamale, and they just plain forgot the raspberry sauce and ice cream. Then my wife discovered raspberry sauce on her overly-eggy flan. I'm open to giving Battleground another shot, but screwing up 100% of the desserts and being out of two items wasn't the best first experience. read more

Very authentic food and great outdoor atmosphere. My favorites are their Al Pastor taco and the shrimp tacos. I have ordered takeout from here a few times and the food never fails to impress. Our most recent in-person dining visit was not one to remember, and will be tough to justify another in-person dining visit based on tonight's service. To begin we ordered our appetizer, and a server brought an appetizer to our table and said it was for us, it didn't look like what we ordered but since it came out at an appropriate time after ordering and it looked kind of like what we ordered I figured it was right. Half way through our real appetizer comes out and they realize they had made a mistake. Unfortunately it seems that when they make a mistake, the customer pays. I understand it is tough for businesses right now, but serving customers extra things they didn't order and charging them for them is not appropriate. At this point the appetizer was somewhat spicy and I was really looking forward to the beer and cocktail I ordered to wash it down with, however those didn't come out until our main course. To make this worse, our server never brought out any water, or offered any until I had to ask for some half way through my main course. It is safe to say that I will still support this business because their food is amazing and their values are in the right place, but it will be a very hard sell for me to be willing to dine-in again due to the poor service. read more

Hands down the best restaurant in Kent. I love the environment- it's a little more secluded, nice and quiet, and the patio's great for a relaxing afternoon. I'm still working my way through the menu but there are a ton of interesting, appealing options. Everything I've had has been amazing and you're just not gonna find those kinds of flavors anywhere else around here. Also they're very upfront about having cool social values and legitimate community presence, so I feel good about supporting such a business (as opposed to phony colonizer BS serving what is essentially dressed-up Taco Bell-grade garbage such as Barrio.) I recommend the Baja Fish and Cochinita. I can easily see myself eating there every week and never getting tired of it. Intrigued by the cocktail selection but haven't tried them yet though I definitely intend to. Very much looking forward to trying the Chocolate Tamal next time as well! I see they're doing live music Friday nights now so I'd love to check that out in the future also. read more

HORRIBLE. The owner is extremely rude and seriously needs a reality check. Owning a small business in this town doesn't leave room for poor customer service. I have been in 3 times to really see if it's worth my while. ITS NOT! Small portions, over priced for mediocre food that lacks any flavor, while presentation is pretty it does nothing other than please the eye for a moment. Not to mention the amount of times I have heard people (myself included) be told they can't get a table because everything is booked. Even at 6:30/7pm when there isn't a soul in the restaurant. This is the most poorly run restaurant I have ever been to, unprofessional, unhygienic, and over priced I wouldn't tell my worst enemy to visit this establishment. The hygiene issues I noticed had me leaving the restaurant without even finishing my meal, and when I asked about what I saw I was rudely told not to ask questions. While walking to the men's restroom (which is right next to the kitchen) I noticed that none of the kitchen staff is wearing gloves and they are frequently seen bringing prepared food up from a basement that definitely needs to be inspected by the health department. I will be calling first thing Wednesday morning and asking for a member of the health department to look into this establishment as soon as they open read more

The Battleground is absolutely the BEST Mexican in Kent. Tonight my family and I ventured out to The Battleground for the first time. We have a seven yr old that can be a tad bit picky. The chef was so kind as to prepare a taco that was not on the menu. My 7 yr old felt so grown up and important. That small gesture made family dinner night very special.
