The instructor greeted me by name and asked if I had any injuries or needed any modifications, then walked me over to the equipment and explained that I needed two sets of free weights to add to the other set up equipment (a mat, a lower back mat, ball and resistance band). It was all women in the class, and I can't be sure but i get the feeling it's like 90%+ female most of the time. There's also a spin studio in the space. For barre devotees, I think it's a solid choice and very conveniently located. Also there's ample parking out front and in the parking garage just underneath. All in all, it was a good midday workout.

I came here yesterday. I am a old guy, broken down from a great life of being a musician,…read moremotorcycle wrecks, race car wrecks, skiing disasters, playing Army for many years and basically burned the candle at five ends. Add the tum tum, and you would think this is the last place I would end up. The different orthopedic doctors and Physical Therapists all basically said go to something like this and see what makes you hurt :-( . I called and talked to the business and it turns out that they have many different types of classes, including rehab and recovery. They would make adjustments for me if needed. The business was spotless and organized to a T. Then came the class. The instructor, Jennifer, was quite charming as was the staff. The attendees were all ages, shapes, sizes, and I was not the only man there. Jennifer said she could adjust the instruction if needed due to all my damage and I said no way, go full blast and if I had problems I would adjust myself. So, full of confidence, I started immediately with the class which was a "grace", or something like that, for newbies. Jennifer was enthusiastic, and kept the tempo going. I had some problems at first following the instructions as I was new to this, but with the mirrors and her assistants, I started getting the idea. Yeah! I heard "shake it off and rest" but I could never see where "rest" was in the picture. I realized that if I totally stopped I would never be able to start up again, so I did the best I could. Then I learned to hate the words "bar and barre". When you are told to grab or lean on the bar, you are really going to get it. All in all, it was wonderful. Jennifer or one of her assistants would come and help with advice, and there was only 2 moves I could not do. When we were finally finished, my muscles were shaking so bad from lack of use in the past few years, I asked my wife to drive home, much to her glee. Fast forward 1 day and I am worn out and sore, but in a good way. I am definitely more flexible, I don't have pain where I used to have pain, so this event probably saved me a lot of money to doctors and therapists as I know now where to target and to what extent I can handle and still live.

Mod Fitness opened a gorgeous second location located just off Burnet Road. The studio is inside an…read moreadorable converted house with a similar feel of the south Lamar location but is more spacious. They also have a boutique selling nice workout clothing, grip socks and fancy water bottles. I did the hour long barre class yesterday and it was an excellent workout. Hollie instructed the fast paced class with grace and before I knew it the hour was over. They also offer other classes like Mod Burn which incorporates high intensity training and Barre 50 (shorter class). There are new client specials and I purchased an Austin Tidbits deal of 3 weeks for $49. If you like barre you will love Mod Fitness.

Want to work every part of your body in 1 hour? Want to have fun while you get your butt kicked?…read moreWant to feel so sore for days after? MOD is the place. My new favorite place for Barre classes in north-central ATX. The studio is clean, simple, small. It's a house turned fitness studio, with about 6 parking spots in back, and street parking in front. I've never had a problem finding parking, morning or evening. There is a small area for your belongings, a front desk (with a friendly face posted up), 2 clean restrooms, and the work out room. The walls are lined with mirrors and barres, of course. During the barre classes (my favorite), you will need a mat, ball, small hand weights, and a strap (all provided). You literally work every part of your body. Upper, lower, middle, front, back... you get the idea. Every time I attend, I find myself surprised at the exercises that are new to me. I'm a DVD and workout class junkie, and to learn new exercises excites me! You will work your lower half to the point of shakes and earthquakes around the barre, all by being pushed in an encouraging way. All the instructors are just awesome. I appreciate the countdown (just 8 more seconds... etc), which usually leads to an isometric hold... which leads to 8 pulses, then relax (8 more is a white lie). I leave MOD feeling like a goddess. Get your booty to the barre and get ready to work! I love MOD!

As with each barre3 location i have personally experienced for myself, the instructors at this location are warm, welcoming, exceptional & challenging. barre3 is a beautiful, "full-body balanced workout" that boils down to a unique blend of yoga, pilates, & ballet (barre) work. i've tried alllll the boutique fitness classes & studios, genres, methods/styles etc., you name it...and barre3 is the most fulfilling, enjoyable, & challenging workout experience i've had! Don't get it twisted - each barre3 class i've ever taken has been extremely intense & difficult, but the physical, mental, & emotional health improvements & peaks are well worth it! Barre3's website describes it best, "Our innovative approach combines low-impact isometric moves, large-range cardio bursts, and mind-centering breathwork." - and for each of those details, i'm in love! the cherry on top of the barre3 sundae is that their co-founder/CEO, Sadie Lincoln, is an absolute role model, leader queen! (ProTip: she also teaches & has some of their most-killer recorded classes in their online inventory!) In addition to studio classes, they offer at-home recorded & live workouts. Their in-store merchandise is consistently a cute & comfortable selection that they rotate seasonally - they cover the typical workout leggings, tanks, tops, barre socks, etc. And, you get a 10% discount off of their retail merchandise if you have a membership with them. Price point is on par with other higher-end, boutique-style fitness studios in Austin, & more affordable if you have a monthly employee benefit for expensing & getting partial/full reimbursement for gym membership. They do offer a student, teacher, and military discount off of their membership. They offer a free first class, so grab a friend who is also new to Barre3 & go check em out !
