We absolutely love this place! Actually lunched here twice during our vacation…read more The service was kind and attentive, the lunch specials are dynamite!!! As the food was absolutely delectable. Did I mention the lunch specials???? We loved every bite: my 10 yr old son even enjoyed the mushrooms! Hard pressed to choose a favorite as we ordered different things and shared notes... we loved it all: the fish n chips, the steak pies, the desserts. Cannot go wrong. The gardens are absolutely lovely too.

Saajan has become one of my favourite Kebab house recently. It may not look the best but believe me…read morethe food is excellent. The chicken I always have is succulent and juicy and so is the lamb, always cooked slightly pink which is a first for me in a kebab house!! There is all your usual kebabs including chicken tikka, lamb tikka, donner, chicken donner etc. As well as various currys, starters, lamb chops, fish. Prices are very reasonable for what you get, about £5.50 for 2 meats on nann with salad and sauce cannot be beat for quality and price. There is a decent sized seating area upstairs as well as down stairs. This place is always busy, even at 2am in the morning! The only let down is the onion bhajis which are just microwaved and go a little soggy and loose there fresh crispiness but this is not a reason not to try here. If you are after decent food at decent prices then you must try. Just don't expect the Ritz...

Saajan is another mediocre looking eat in/take out in Rusholme but the food here can be amazing…read more Even moi, who usually turns her nose up at any form of kebabs has been known to frequent Saajan. And it is a bit of an institution (there's another one on Wilmslow Road down in the Fallowfield end). Saajan has been rustling up asian cuisine for about fifteen years now, I believe. They must be doing something right. Saajan promotes itself as only using the finest ingredients and things like that - but its definitely all 100% Halal and the food really does taste good. Fresh starters, unusual mains - like prawns - and a great, fast service make it stand out from some of its rivals. This one has plenty of seating upstairs, and a few tables downstairs, so you don't have to only enjoy their delights in the cold outside. I hate the cliche bright orange and red of the counter and its still not something I would think of as a proper restaurant though, but still.

Essy's is your traditional independent, local cafe which you'd find in many a small town, but right…read morein the heart of the hustle and bustle of the city centre, it is done well, and still feels like a local spot right in the big city. Turn past the House of Fraser on Deansgate, you'll find Essy's on King Street West at number 31-33, it can be quite hard to find as the store-front isn't too obvious, I did walk past this when trying to navigate with my GPS at first. It's a rather large area inside, with mirrors on the back wall, the tables are fairly comfortable and an open kitchen. The menu has a variety of items including all-day breakfasts, omelettes, jacket potatoes and toasties, it's a place that is great for breakfast, lunch or a light snack during the day before one's evening meal, with food at a reasonable quality and value. I ordered a jacket potato with tuna and cheese, it came out of the kitchen almost straight away, presented how I'd requested it with butter, tuna mayo first and cheese on top, they weren't stingy with the toppings, which was a very generous portion for a large potato. My potato tasted good quality, the fillings obviously made it better, but it was rather good, a very small portion of the potato was a little hard but cooking a big potato can be difficult, and as I was able to enjoy almost all of it, I'm willing to let that one slide. My meal came to £6, which was very reasonable, it worked out much better value for money than rivals nearby. In terms of improvements, I would have liked a couple of napkins to go with my meal, the cutlery was just handed to me, I would have liked to be able to order an iced tea with my food, with the drinks located in a fridge mainly consisting of fizzy pop, obviously, they do close at 4 pm which is a little early, but considering the type of food they serve, it is reasonable to expect this. 4* - Good food and good service, I'd love to see more gluten-free options including a selection of sandwiches introduced in the near future, but for now I'll stick to the potatoes!

This place is always a bustle of activity at lunchtimes because it manages to be a sandwhich shop and restaurant serving great food all at the same time. They make sandwiches to go, but you can also choose from a range of jacket potatoes, omelettes, daily specials and even pies (yes, pies. Which you can have with gravy and everything. AMAZING). So basically I really like Effy's. Obviously, the food isn't spectacular, but it's basic, freshly made and isn't full of grease. The last special I had was a coronation chicken baguette with a side order or chips. The baguette was delicious, and there were loads and loads of chips, which is always a good thing. I got all of this, with a drink, for around £4. What a bargain.

Food quality was very good but the service was a disaster. Soups came reasonably quickly but our main courses took such a long time that we had to ask the waiter to replace the hot bowls they'd bought us because they sat on the table so long that they were cold again - twice over. The portions of main dishes were of a good size and the food was very tasty but the rice was really rather mean - it's not as if it's expensive! Soft drinks were small and rather mean. I think I'd be more likely to go for a takeaway than to eat in at this place. It was just too cold and noisy and lacking in any kind of 'Oriental' style. Dinner for two cost £37
