It is on a main road in the town, but there is a small outdoor seating area, which is reasonably pleasant, and a car park around the back to make up for the lack of street parking. The staff were friendly and the service was reasonably fast, especially as I visited on a Saturday, where they seemed to be quite busy, and also taking a number of telephone orders, and delivery orders. After hearing of their gluten-free options with a dedicated gluten-free fryer, I was excited to try out this place, and while there were some positives for sure, I couldn't help but have been left with a taster of bitter disappointment. The menu here is pretty large, as well as the standard chippy options, they have a variety of options including burgers, curries and more, this is where I find chippies tend to go wrong, they have too many options and just mess up on the basic staples, which seems to have been the case here. I ordered the gluten-free cod and chips, with chips, gravy and sausage, which all could be made gluten-free - so far so good. I was angry however to look at the menu board and notice the gluten-free menu is much higher than the regular menu, I can get gluten-free costs more to make, but when you're talking having to pay more for every single item, it adds up, surely the gravy would have been the same anyway? I wasn't a big fan of the packaging either, I'm used to my fish and chips being served in a box, however, everything was in separate, paper packaging, which not only made it much more difficult to eat and unwrap everything, but the environmental damage and so much waste is frankly a disgrace. I did find the food overall to be really greasy and salty, while the batter was very good for gluten-free, it felt like the fish was half battered, and only really battered around the edges. The chips were also really soggy and almost inedible, while the gravy was a little bland. The sausage wasn't too bad, a little meatier than the average chippy sausage, but that isn't bad. I really wanted to like this place, it has a lot of positives, and the food did look good, but from charging a gluten-free tax to wasteful packaging to issues with the quality of the food, mainly arising from it being far too salty, and soggy, I wouldn't return. 2*

Located opposite the markets, this fish bar in my opinion is the best in town. Owned by a very friendly man who has had the business handed down to him, it's always busy around lunch time. The chips are cooked to perfection and the batter on the fish ia always the perfect colour, crispiness and full of flavour. It would get a roaring trade if it was open in the evenings.

The seating is unique, you can either be conventional and eat in the restaurant or eat in the bus. Yes this must be only place I've ever been to where you can eat in a bus. But i'd been told about Grandma Pollards a few years ago and as myself and Mrs Z were at a loose end the other day we thought we'd give it a try. First off the exterior,the front just looks like any other chippy/chippy restaurant,but round the back it is a different story. Being boring we decided to eat inside the plaice (see what I did there?) and we both opted for the same food namely jumbo haddock,chips and mushy peas,or to give it's real name,food of the mythical sky beings.... Large haddock said the menu,and bloody large it was too,it was hanging over the side of the plate large.It was also really,really lovely,the batter was crispy and bubbly in equal measure and the fish inside was soft,flaky and tasty. The chips did indeed taste of chips and the mushy peas were also of the top notch variety. Grandma pollard also sells home made pies (none of that Hollands mush) and their own cakes,and even though we were incredibly stuffed from our fish feast we decided to get a couple of pies and a brick sized vanilla slice to take home with us,all of which were very nice,especially the vanilla slab!! I am now very happy because i've found a proper chippy that is not too far away from home,and at the end of the day that's what's important in life,a proper chippy!!
