Good coffee and pastries but nothing special, the price seems high for the area. You enter the coffee shop through the first floor retail shops and can take an elevator to the top floor. The coffee shop itself was extremely crowded with people sitting and standing in every corner and kids running around. There is a cool outdoor wrap around balcony that gives you a nice view of the shops surrounding the store, but it has limited coverage during the rain. read more

To say that I am disappointed with their Service, product, and Customer care is an understatement. I can't remember the last time I ever ran into a situation that got me so excited and angry at the same time. And that all for 14 Euro. My family and I stopped at your Cafe at the Alte Potsdamerstrasse 5 in Berlin. We ordered 4 cups of coffee, which I paid by CC upon ordering. Even though the place was not overly busy, it took about 15 min until the coffee was ready for pickup at the counter. Asking for milk seemed to be a bother and searching for some sugar (only Candies sugar that is usually used for tea) in a somewhat dirty bowl, used by all the guests took another couple of minutes and was a task. When we finally took our first sip, all 4 of us immediately thought that the milk was expired, since the coffee tasted extremely sour. When we took back our (still full) cups, the lady barista was not impressed and said that it was not the milk, but that the coffee bean itself was sour. When I asked for a refund, I was told that none of the 3 employees knew how to do a refund on the CC machine. They tried to reach the Manager over the phone ( Allan) who finally picked up the phone and told them for me to request a refund over your website. I NEVER HEARD SOMETHING SO RIDICULOUS. One of the employees told me that no employee knows the full name of the manager, but was nice enough to provide me with his cell #. When he tried (several times) to reach him one more time, so I could speak with him directly, the manager failed to pick up his phone. I finally reached that "Allan" - Manager this morning around 10:45 AM, He gave me the runaround, and told me to request a refund over the website since he is only responsible for operational issues. He continued to tell me that he was just woken up and I called him during his private time! You can take this as good or bad, but The Barn distinctly reminds me of some of my favorite coffee shops in my home of Portland, Oregon. It's got the aesthetic. It's got the attention to detail. It's got the rigidness. And it's also go the very, very, very good coffee. Five stars. I selected from their pour-over menu, and frankly I can't remember what I ordered. What I do recall is that the wait wasn't out of the ordinary, and when it was ready the barista volunteered quite a bit of info about what he had made, including the origin of the beans, the process he had gone through and the tasting notes. The information clearly hasn't stuck with me, but I find his passion admirable and his customer service on point. I'd happily go back on the regular, if I lived on the same continent. read more

Is it just me, or does this place emit a hipster vibe? Maybe it was the plaid shirts that alerted me. Then again, I didn't see any drinks on the menu containing Pabst Blue Ribbon.... The Barn has a creative theme and setup, but it's tiny. Makes me feel like I'm having coffee in a barn or shed that you can find in a Martha Stewart magazine. The seating and tables are low, which is perfect if I was having a tea party with my little nieces or some Hobbits. Not suited for two adult women, that's for sure. Also, my "chair" -- practically a step stool -- was wobbly and made my ass hurt. I did like the Rorschach art in my coffee, which was the best part, sad to say. I had fun trying to guess what artwork was in my drink. However, my Milchkaffee was not worth € 3. Without a doubt there isn't a shortage of cafes in Berlin that serve good food and hot drinks in a cool environment, where you can chill with your friends and mingle with others. The place has a nice charm to it with beautiful wood work and presentation of food and drinks. I'd definitely try it if you're in the area or need a real cup of 3rd wave coffee. Wanted a good coffee experience before exploring Berlin. Essentially, it's like any hipster coffee shop in Portland/Oakland/Brooklyn in the US. Minus that, this is place is legit good. Ample seating, nice decor, and great lighting. Didn't try any of the food but it all looked appetizing. Coffee is pricey but I'd say it's worth it. Excellent coffee shop located in Mitte close by to local restaurants and an adorable book store (Do you read me?). The decor is minimalist and reminded me very much of home in San Francisco but the latte and carrot cake I ordered was fantastic. We were staying near Alexanderplatz and it was about a 20 minute walk from the main station. It was a little odd that everyone in here was speaking English and appeared to be American being that we are in the heart of Berlin but I would recommend a visit especially if you are in the area. The one thing is the place is pretty small and so if you are a party of 3 or more, you might find it a little cramped. read more

Consistently over the past 6 or so years delivering the silkiest, smoothest Black Gold I have ever tasted (and I have lived in Hawaii where they have the Kona coffee). My favorite coffee shop during three day stay in Berlin! I came here after a disappointing experience at Factory Girl across the street. The Barn was everything Factory Girl is not- friendly, delightful, and hotspot for a delicious caffeine fix. They had a great iced latte which I enjoyed with my friends over a piece of chocolate cake. The chocolate cake was very decadent and I enjoyed the sweetness subdued by the iced coffee. We sat on their outdoor patio which was very fun among all the young people in the area. The service was very fast and friendly and I highly recommend coming here! There is a minimum for using a credit card (5 euros I think?) so either bring cash or order a well-deserved pastry for yourself! read more

A place for fantastic coffee, cakes and sandwiches. This isn't average coffee - this is excellent coffee from people who care about. The food appears to be backed right there - lovely cakes as well as a range of sandwiches. The staff speak English too (my German is nicht zu gut) - and are pretty friendly. I was asked where I came from, and then we got into a great conversation about coffee here in Edinburgh. They use Square Mile Coffee - awesome stuff. The only downside is that the place is small. I suppose that's what gives it it's charm and ambiance too though. Well worth a visit. read more

But overall I find the place annoying. Seating is very limited, almost nonexistent. On a sunny day expect to find no seating outside on uncomfortable furniture wobbling on a bumpy sidewalk And the person who was working the register didn't even try to speak German. The guy after me had to switch to English to get his coffee. Now, I am a foreigner here in Berlin and my German is so-so, but I try as much as possible to speak German. Third wave coffee is all of the rage, and coming from San Francisco -- we were in search of non-Italian roast like coffee. The Barn is a favorite amongst some of my colleagues, but the bf found this all on his own as it was close to where we stayed in Mitte. Yes, this location is extremely small and it's quite awkward to maneuver around when the crowd grows, but we didn't have any issues with staff being snobby or aloof. In fact, it was here that we received recommendations on other coffee shops to visit and even some bar/food recommendations. We came back one more time before our trip ended, and our awesome non-German baristo (sorry, what's the word for this?) took the time to explain the difference in beans from South America and Africa. He even made us a cappuccino with the freshest cream to demonstrate how it can really elevate the flavors in coffee beyond a regular espresso. We bought some beans to bring home and will definitely come back to The Barn when we revisit Berlin. read more

I think it's interesting that the reviews for this place are so split. As far as I can tell, if you're reviewing the coffee, it gets 5*, if you are looking to make friends with baristas, it's 1-2. I'm reviewing for coffee. I have other friends, and don't need baristas to be my bestie just because I order something from them. They have a great selection roasts, and we have purchased beans to grind at home several times. They take coffee brewing seriously. It's kind of like a library. You (hopefully) don't go into a library and get ticked off because you're not allowed to shout and eat your lunch and spill ink everywhere. Come here, get your excellent coffee, go. Don't whine about not being able to sit all day with free wifi, or the fact that they don't have pumpkin spice lattes. That's just not what they're about. Located in the Mitte, this local beat is great if you're looking for a cozy place for coffee and cake. It's tiny, seating 6-8 people on a good day, and it's a total hipster magnent from the staff's clothes to the food, tea and coffee. Did I mention the latte art? The coffee is delicious, and so it the pea oolong tea. We ordered a slice of chocolate cake, and a pair of smoked sausages with a slice of bread. We liked it so much, we went back the next day and tried the pasties de nata. Split one, could have eaten 6 by myself. If it's sunny, sit outside so you can have some space. Looking for coffee in Mitte, a neighborhood that still seems as foreign as the Congo, I remembered I had heard good things about the Barn. A tiny coffee shop tucked into a side street, it had a mix of metals and natural wood for decor. A few lovely cakes and sandwiches decorated the display case and a helpful barista tried to figure out if he should address us in English or German (that must be exhausting - switching languages all day). We picked a Milchkaffee, a piece of chocolatey torte and a sweet quiche. I was disappointed that a 2.50 euro of cake was one small solitary slice, but it was tasty. And the quiche, though only a few bites, was delightful. The coffee was the star however, the perfect mix of mellow milk and pick-me-up coffee. Watch yourself on the cute 3 legged wood stalls. On a beautiful fall day I was looking for the best coffee place in town and found The Barn. This place exceeds all expectations! The location is fantastic. They have some benches where you can sit on outside. We were accompanied by a lot of birds who obviously weren't strangers to The Barn's pastries. They kept on asking for more. Each time I move, I have to learn a new city. Having lived in six major cities over the past ten years, I find this to be no easy task. This includes having to find new barbers/doctors/dentists. It means having to locate the nearest ATM machine to me where I don't have to pay a fee. It means having to learn the quickest way to my place from every major neighborhood in the city to keep from getting ripped off by a cab driver. It means learning which streets to walk on during my morning commutes to lower my chances of getting hit by a car, stepping in dog shit, or getting yelled at by a mentally unstable homeless person. But the greatest challenge is learning about food culture in a new city. Food is something I find myself quite passionate about. Five years in San Francisco have taught me the difference between eating and eating well. I've read books and kept up to speed on food industry (from industrial farms to local, sustainable farming), understood food politics (subsidies and lobbies). I've stayed on farms, talked with restaurant owners, had friends who are chefs, asked tons of questions, and gotten lots of answers. Some of the cities in which I've lived have had a great understanding of food and have sought to exploit ways in which all humans should try to understand and consume their food. Some of the cities in which I've lived are just beginning to understand food culture. Berlin is a fascinating city not only because it's hugely progressive and well-educated, but it's rapidly changing, growing, and evolving. Part of this evolution includes making sure we as Berliners are doing things right, with foresight and with responsibility; towards improving our environment and our health. Food is becoming a big part of this. Cultural diversity, progressive ideals, and an amalgamation of new world philosophies (biodiversity, sustainability) and old world philosophies (such as halal and family traditions) towards food is a big reason we're seeing a rapid change in Berlin as a food city. Great things are coming. And great things need to start somewhere. The Barn in Mitte (map) is not just a café, it's a place that's helping us to change the way we look at coffee (and at food) in general. The owner Ralf encourages his staff to take pride in teaching patrons about coffee, talking about the origins of the coffee, where it's sourced, where it's roasted. Filter coffees have been part of a new trend of coffee. Traditionally seen as lesser than espresso-based drinks (particularly by the traditional coffee countries, Italy and France), filters have recently begun to take center stage as a more diverse way of consuming coffee, presenting different and often times more complex flavors than even standard espressos. Last weekend Ralf brought in guest baristas from London and Norway to bring some of their local coffees, to help teach the staff further about coffee and espresso prep, and to offer coffee tastings and lessons using some of the best coffees I've ever tasted. The food at The Barn is no different. Ralf prides himself in sourcing his ingredients from local farms, often times using non-homogenized milk, freshly-churned butter and locally prepared jams from local vendors, the quality in the ingredients is unsurpassed and you can taste it in their selection of freshly-baked baked goods, sandwiches, and freshly-squeezed juices. My largest struggle in moving to new cities is finding my café. I don't have many routines in my life, but my morning cup of coffee is a near obsessive routine. I take a long time to find my café and once I find it, it's difficult to tear me away. Of all the places I've found, since living in and including San Francisco, The Barn has provided a level of quality, service, and responsibility I have not seen in a café in a long time. I found this place to be an annoying slice of Anglophilia. Clicky English-speaking people making it their home away from home. Fine but not for me. Easily my favorite coffee shop in all Berlin. My favorite is the flat white, but they really do any kind of coffee including Aeropressing, Single Drip or Woodneck. Which are mostly still unknown around here. What sets them apart from others like Godshot or Bonanza is that they have another great coffee almost every week - great in terms of Four Barrel, Intelligensia, Coffee Collective, etc.. The other two are great coffee places as well, but The Barn is constantly innovating here and trying out new things. It's another experience. Aside from the coffee they serve, they also have a great selection of sandwiches and pastries. And they are really nice too. :-) I'm a fan! read more
