I can personally say that Shannon and Ka are awesome, and do recommend this location. That said, I have never had a more rough haircut than with Lori. She didn't do bad. The cut looks okay, but the experience was bit of a nightmare. The balance of finesse and firmness needs to be reevaluated. There is no need to Clamp down on someone with the force that she does. Bad experience both with the service and the haircut. All interactions with staff made me feel uncomfortable and as if I was being difficult. I don't have a difficult haircut but it usually takes longer than 10 minutes. I do not think that is enough time to give a good haircut and take the care to leave the customer satisfied. Being a disabled Air Force veteran with a pulmonary problem, I don't get out much considering I'm high risk. I hadn't had a haircut since the start of the corona virus. I was looking forward to getting shampoo and hair cut. I did a search and found the barbershop on Eagan road, just a couple of miles from where I live. I stopped in and granite my hair was probably down in the middle of my back. The woman that greeted me right off the bat told me they had no openings, without even checking the appointment schedule. after checking their website they certainly had openings and do accept walk-ins. I'm sure they don't get a lot of clientele like my self with very long hair. Well I can see why they only get three stars. read more

I'm only giving one star because they don't have negative stars. Stay away from this location. Stay FAR away. You'll get better results cutting your own hair. The girl who'd been cutting my hair did ok the first time, then was out several months, came back and did a so-so job, then she called in sick the day of my appointment and I wasn't notified (even though I'd given them my phone number when I first started), which ticked me off because I make an appointment for a reason and show up on time. They weren't even sure when that girl worked again (!) and I needed to get this done so a guy that works there said he'd do it. All of the ineptitude up to this point had ticked me off even further, and then the guy asks how they usually cut my hair. I'm not a hairstylist - I don't know exactly what they call how they typically cut my hair - so I'm trying to tell him and he says "do they use a 4?" several times. I have NO freakin' clue what the hell a "4" is, tell him so, and continue trying to explain what I've seen them do previously, using scissors to layer it, etc. He suddenly says "I'll use a 4, it has a long comb and leaves a half-inch blah blah blah and you'll like it my friend" then HE JUST STARTS SHAVING MY FREAKING HEAD WITH AN ELECTRIC CLIPPERS!!!!! WHICH THEY NEVER DO!!!! I told him to stop but he'd already done several passes, so he completely un-did everything my hair had been trained to do for the last 30 years! I couldn't freaking believe this guy! At that point I had no choice but to let him finish - he sure as hell couldn't put the hair back on. And he was slam! bam! whacking hair off my head, grabbed another pair of electric clippers and zapped off my sideburns, grabs the mirror and says "how's that?" I mean, he didn't even take 3 minutes. It was something like you'd see in a movie when guys go into the military and get their hair shaved off. I have NEVER been treated so shitty in my entire life. My hair looks like shit - and it's going to grow out and look even worse because he just hacked everything off. Needless to say, I won't be going back to this place, and I'll be telling everyone I know about my experience. This place is one of the best I have found in Madison. They always hook you up the way you want it. Ask for Johnny or Shelia. They know what they are doing! From a fade to lining up your beard you won't be disappointed. Make an appointment and show up get right on in on time. If you walk in you may have to wait 30 mins if they are busy. Regardless if you don't want some half a** hack job for a haircut then you wait for someone who knows what they are doing. The barbershop itself is a very clean, fun atmosphere. Safe environment. TVs and peanuts to munch in the lobby. Magazines and the daily newspapers are always available. They are always friendly. Greet you when you walk in. You can tell it is a place that is run right. They truly care about what they do here. They care about you being satisfied. The price is right. You get what you pay for. Wash, haircut, hot face wrap and massage less than $ 20. $12.50 for a quality hair cut? That's a joke, right? For The Barbershop, it isn't. I have been a repeat customer of The Barbershop since moving to Madison in 2015, and I have put off writing this review because I remained skeptical that I would continue to receive quality haircuts from this shop at such a low price. This is the real deal! I have been here around 6 times now, and only 1 haircut was slightly disappointing. The disappointing cut was given by a new barber who I hadn't had before. She was very rough with my hair (pulling on it), but I haven't seen her since. All 5 other cuts were by different barbers, and I am quite happy with how they all turned out! There's a tv in each cutting booth for you to watch if you're not up for some "awkward" hair cutting conversation. If you do want to chat, the barbers are all quite friendly! Hair cut includes a shampoo service with a warm towel. After the cut is done you get free styling and a shoulder message, Although, I personally find the shoulder message creepy as it is given by a weird handheld robot. I'll pass, but thanks for the free product and the head massage during the shampooing! My favorite stylist is also the manager, Emily. She is super easy to talk to and does a fantastic job. I have been cutting my hair there for the last 6 months or so. Always cut it with Holly. I made the mistake of going with someone else. I forgot her name, Kath maybe. She is blond and has a few dreadlocks. I will preface my next comments by saying I am not a snowflake or a particularly sensitive person, but gratuitous rudeness pisses me off. I have a 1-week-old baby at home and showed up for my haircut with a painful stiff neck from holding him almost all night long trying to put him to sleep. I did not mention anything because I felt relatively fine after taking pain meds. The problem started during the haircut, the stylist gently repositioned my head 3 or 4 times when the following conversation ensued (verbatim): - Stylist (very condescendingly): "I am doing this for a reason" It took me a second to understand what she was referring to, and then I said: - I am sorry; I am not doing this on purpose... I was about to explain about my neck pain and how I couldn't control the fact that my neck was moving towards the right due to the muscle tightness, when she interrupted and even more snidely said: - Well, you are moving a lot so... I kept my mouth shut until the end of the haircut since I was afraid she was going to retaliate if I said something, but she totally realized she pissed me off big time. By the end of it she gave me a half apology where she justified her rudeness and lack of professionalism by saying that she acted like that due to safety concerns for me and her, which I get , but does not justify her behavior. Really frustrated with this place, I scheduled an appointment one day at 4:00pm. Spelled out my name letter by letter, gave them my phone number, put the appointment in my phone, and left work early to get my haircut. When I got there I waited for my phone call to come inside. I never got one. Eventually, I called them (the same number I called at 9:35am earlier that morning, the phone number was linked to this Barbershop) only to be surprised as they never had anything written down, no record of my appointment. Had an appointment with Lorrie who was extremely rude. She called me a few minutes before my appointment to say she was ready for me, when I was in the parking lot. She asked me what I wanted and I told her what another lady usually does (Mind you nothing complicated) and her response was "well I don't have time to cut your hair three times." She said that word for word to my face, which is extremely rude and uncalled for. I just wanted a quick cut and if you didn't have time for me then call me to reschedule. Pretty sure I will not be returning. First 2 times were average. Most recent visit was poor. The employee was very shabbily dressed.....he did not greet me w/any pleasantries....seemed disinterested in what I asked for in the cut.....I was very clear all I wanted was a 'trim' and that I did not mind coming back in a couple weeks. He apparently cut it his way.....took way too much off. They were late by 20 minutes in getting me in the chair.....yet the cutter had me done in 15.....after he grumbled about having to 1st wash my hair. I shampoo every morning. Last night and today my back and neck is all torqued from the back & forth for the wash 'he had to do'. For the past year, I've been coming to this location for my haircuts. Every time I'd had a great experience, which is why I kept coming back. I finally felt like I'd found the right place! This past weekend, I called to set up an appointment because I know how booked these guys get during the weekends. On the phone I was asked if I had a preferred stylist. I explained that the last person to cut my hair was a man (there's only one man who works there) and I'd prefer anyone other than him. I was reassured, and went about my day. I arrived 10 minutes early to my appointment, in case they were able to see me early. After checking in, the very person I requested to *not* *cut* *my* *hair* informed me of how busy they were, that I may not be able to be seen that day, and if they could in fact still see me, that the wait would be extensive. He did quickly offer to "knock me out, real quick", and I declined. I was placed in the uncomfortable position of having to tell this person to his face that I did not like the way he cuts hair, and the haste in which he does it. After few short minutes, someone else was able to take my appointment and I did get my hair cut that day by someone else. The problem here seems to be a lack of communication. What's the point of scheduling an appointment if you're not going to be ready for your clients when they arrive? Moreover, why bother asking if I have a preferred stylist if your plan is to thrust the very person I requested not to see in my general direction with a pair of dull clippers? The entire experience was so uncomfortable and awkward, I don't see myself going back. Maybe these aren't the types of things most people care about, but if you're going to run a business, it is my opinion that you should be catering to the customers who are putting food on your table. read more

Well I read the reviews before I went and was somewhat impressed by this barbershop. They did what was advertised, with the cut, and wash but I did not get my stash or my eyebrows trimmed as I thought I would. Most regular barbers do ask me but not by the woman who did my hair. Another odd things is that they used a hair dryer on high to blow the loose hair off of my head and shoulders into the cubicle! Generally there is a vacuum system for that. In the light you could see the hair floating around which makes for a dirty area and something you could breathe. I have never seen that before and it's not a good thing to do. I did get a decent head and shoulder massage and all in all was pretty good for fourteen bucks cash. I was in the chair for about twenty minutes so they are pretty quick. I might go back but maybe to a different barber or location to see if they all do the same things. I had an appointment but they do take walk ins. I was told that if you are even a minute late to an appointment you could be bumped to the next available barber. That seems a little harsh but that is their policy I guess. I am never late so it doesn't effect me but kind of irritated me that I was told this. read more

I made my appointment over the phone 40 minutes before arrival on a Sunday morning, on arrival i had to wait 13 minutes to be seen. The guy that cut my hair did a poor job on cutting, was lopsided on both sides of my head by a lot and my sideburns were not even. On top of all this the guy kept looking at his cell phone. Totally forgot who I had, but she was short, chubby and had short red hair. I feel like if you want to be working at a hair salon you need to keep up with hair fashion/styles. She doesn't know how to cut, Did a terrible job on the back of my head. She almost left the front of my bangs the same after going straight across with the scissors! If I didn't tell her she would of never fixed it. Tried to make excuses why she didn't. I know how I want my haircut and I'm not getting my hair done by her anymore. Appt at 5:50 got in right around there and they gave my appt to someone else. Which all in all would be fine asides from the girl at the front desks inability to be nice. Snotty, unreasonable and not interested in finding a solution. I run a business in which our guests are priority and make every attempt to make them whole. There was absolutely no effort to find a solution. I'm in this place every two weeks and usually tip around 70%, the barbers in there know this and looked at me like they wanted to help, given my healthy tips I'm sure but big bird seemed to be the boss. Can't beat the price and service, if you get a good stylist. Over the years I'd say it's been great about 90% of the time, but that's because Sheila was my regular stylist for most of the time. When I I called in May 2017 they said she didn't work there anymore. Had two fair to poor cuts since then, one at east one at west. Now that it's $15 and I haven't located a go-to stylist, I'm ready to try some other companies. Great while it lasted, too bad they couldn't retain an excellent stylist. read more

I have been going to this place since moving here last year. I have always gone to the Appleton locations where I'm from and never had an issue. Tonight I had an appointment at 6 ... There was an accident on Washington and I walked in at 6:01. I signed in and sat there for a few minutes. A girl comes up to me and says sorry you lost your spot... I was like I'm a minute late because of a car accident. She says next time call us we have a lot of no shows. I called at 4:30 and set the appointment. I'm in there system and never not showed up. Her solution. We maybe can get you in but you can't get your hair washed.... What?!? Are you kidding. I said no that wouldn't work. She then said well you can come back tomorrow then. Great resolution! No I won't. I said I'll find somewhere else I guess and let my business walk out the door. It's a $14 haircut and I tip $6 every time. I guess they have too much business that they can lose clients. Congrats on losing a regular one every two or three weeks. read more

Fast service and good finish

One of my sons loves this place because of the hot towels. My teenager loathes it, thanks to a horrible, 5-minute haircut that left him in tears in our minivan. :) Despite giving the same request to each of their stylists, both kids left with dramatically different haircuts in terms of quality. The guy who cut my teenager's hair used a clippers all over in literally 5 minutes and carved out an unnatural, stylized hairline across his forehead and peaks. The hairline was very stylized in a way that I've only seen on African American or Hispanic boys. All fine and good - but not with my son's hair texture, nor did he ask for that look. Whereas these cuts look good on lots of kids, my kid looked like Spock. The guy clearly didn't listen to a word we said when we described what we wanted and did his thing as quickly as possible. We haven't been back since. Unless you have a tried-and-true stylist at this place, avoid being a walk-in and rolling the dice with whoever you get. read more
