Ellena's Cafe - Toasted to perfection

Ellena's Cafe

(3 reviews)

I stumbled across this place when I had gone to the corner's Coffee Craving a few months ago…read more When I had gone back to Kingston this passed weekend, and was passing through the Greater Napanee Area, I knew Ellena's was a spot I needed to return to! Super friendly service, great collection of kitchen and home decor items, wine, very come-in-and-we'll-treat-you-well kinda vibe. The first time I picked up some Swedish sponges, at just under $7.00 ea for most of them (depending on sizing), that's approximately $3.00 in savings from the grocery store in Toronto. Points for Ellena's. Not a top, top fan of these sponges though. This first visit also allowed me to purchase a berry pie (not Saskatoon, similar to blueberry however I can't recall the name). This pie was delicious. I knew I had to return to pick up the Chicken Pesto sandwich that was calling my name, yet I needed to leave behind due to my bank card not working. So return I did, and that chicken pesto, was so scrumptious. Would likely have been more enjoyable had I eaten it when it was warm, yet I wasn't all that hungry when I arrived and ended up eating it about 2 hours later. The person who brought it out to me was lovely, he hand delivered it and said, "enjoy". I was waiting in the store. It was such a nice thing for him to do. Above and beyond! I picked up 3 more pies: pecan, blueberry and raspberry. I am obsessed with raspberries, seriously so tasty. This pie is up my alley, the filling is rather generous and the crust is an ideal pairing. It was light in colour, which gave me the pondering of how cooked it was, yet there weren't any raw dough bits. In fact, it was pretty good. The pecan pie is, well, gone. It was also really very good. I tried to make pecan pie once, it didn't have the same flavour most pecan pie has when its made by others. There is a reason Ellena's pecan pie did not last long with me. The blueberry pie, has yet to be tried. This crust also looks on the lighter side. The pastry I picked up was the Pain Au Chocolat. They looked too good sitting next to the cash out. I was definitely buying with my eyes that day and that croissant was flakey, buttery, that strip of chocolate down the centre, rich, delicious, memorable. Very, easy to devour. If I were a glutton, baked goods and treats is definitely the way I would go. I was tempted to get more, the excitment of trying a new place out when I'm in the area infrequently, was present, yet I held back. Needed to spread the money & love to other local shops. :) 100% a spot to hit up when you are in the lil' township.

I really wanted to like this place because the sandwiches truly are delicious. Unfortunately, the…read moreowner's behavior completely overshadowed the food, and after giving her three chances, I won't spend my money there again. On our first visit, my 87-year-old father casually mentioned that he hadn't known the place existed. The owner responded by yelling at him about how long the business has been open and listing other places she owns, leaving him feeling embarrassed and ignorant. The final straw happened during my most recent visit. I flew in from Las Vegas and wanted to take my parents, both in their 80s, to get sandwiches. Standing for long periods is difficult for them, so they sat briefly in the dining area while I ordered. They were the only customers in the restaurant at the time. They were immediately yelled at and told they could not sit there unless they ordered from the dinner menu. My father politely explained that we were ordering sandwiches and that his daughter had just flown in. The owner said it didn't matter--if we weren't ordering off the dinner menu, we had to leave. As a result, we were forced to eat in our car in the middle of winter. Great food does not excuse disrespectful, unkind treatment--especially toward elderly customers. The lack of compassion was shocking, and I will not return.

Service was pretty attentive and our waitress was phenomenal and really upbeat and sweet. They were on it with the refills too. I really thought the kids would love their food, but they just picked at it during the dinner. What kid says no to waffle fries and a hot dog? Apparently the hot dog looked to juicy? lol. My french fry loving son, had no issues with his fries but skipped the chicken nuggets. My poor husband had to polish off whatever was not eaten by our kids after he ate his burger and poutine. I had the plantbased burger and I had no complaints. I will say their pickles are really great on the burger and loved their house sauce that came on it as well. Their fries are on the meatier side and I only ate a couple and passed the rest on to the kids, since the burger was pretty filling on its own. They had toy story playing on the tv in the restaurant. Super cute. It was pretty pricey coming to around $100 after everything was paid out. I'd probably come back for some apps and small bites in the future when visiting in town.

Music is noticeable but not overpowering, supplementing the many conversations going on around us. Wait staff were on the ball and just generally really nice people! Lots of mix and match burger options, including chicken and vegan proteins. You select your burger, protein, type of bun including gluten free, and any customizations. The waitress pointed out one element on the burger I wanted on a GF bun would have gluten and suggested removing it, which I appreciated. Lots of drink options too. This is, overall, a 'something for everyone' experience.
