The Baby Shop

The Baby Shop

It's kind of difficult to tell if this shop is in fact called The Baby Shop, or whether it's…read moreactually, rather oddly called 'www.cheaper-bythedozen.co.uk', as the website name seems to appear more prominent. For such a prominently-advertised website, it's actually quite a disappointment - greeted by a blank box, you 'enter the site' to find a reasonably pleasant welcoming page (although the assertion that 'every mother and father would like to make their child look trendy with baby clothes and footwear' somewhat put me off - for me 'trendy' is the last way I'd like a future baby to look! Bleeurgh!) But then each nicely labelled section at the top is, upon clicking, found to be empty or non-existent. Oh dear! Anyway, back to non-virtual reality...the actual shop is full to the brim with baby gear - plenty of prams that look to be of good quality and practical, a few car seats and baby toys, and a range of baby and children's clothes. The baby clothes aren't horrifyingly trendy, as the website might lead one to believe with some pretty cute baby grows though there are a few mini-grown-up items. Kidswear is trendier, but then kids these days are probably Facebooking on their iPhones by the time they're out of nappies, and we wouldn't want them to be ridiculed in the playground would we? The prices are pretty cheap here, and in the current money-crunch who could blame new parents for seeking out bargains. But clothes-wise I'd always opt for the trusty old charity shop - at 6 months they're only going to grow out of it in a few weeks anyway. And primary school spent in Oxfam get up never did me any harm...but then I s'pose those were the old days!

Not having had children, I am not an expert on Mothercares, so forgive me if I sound a little bit…read morestupid and naive here. Visiting this Mothercare was quite an experience. I can't really summarise it adequately so I'll just have to go into detail. I came here with some ladies from my work to spend the collection of £150 we'd put together for a colleague we all loved who was going on maternity leave. I was all nonchalant and blasé and 'yeah, babies, whatever, let's just get some bibs and that'. Until I walked through the door. It's like some kind of different world. I wanted to cry within five minutes. My voice was hoarse from all the 'ooohs' and 'aaaahs' and I couldn't stop pointing at all the teeny tiny booties and t shirts and one-sies. A plethora of clothing, accessories, cots, blankets, gadgets, toys and other baby stuff, this place is quite something. There's an upstairs that I don't think I could quite have coped with emotionally (plus we overspent by £30 because we got carried away), but there's prolly lots up there too. If you're expecting, or know someone who is, and feel that you're strong enough, you have to come here

I spent hundreds of pounds in preperation for the arrival of our son. You can get everything you…read moreneed and more, infact we ended up with much more than we planned and needed to be honest. The White Company is a lovely shop that really is a bright, sparkling white. Everywhere you look,…read moreyou will find lush white items for your home, bath and body. They even stock a range of clothing for men, women and children and babies. The prices are good for what you get and even though a few bits and pieces may exceed your budget, there's plenty of less expensive, beautiful pieces to choose from. The website is very organised and easy to shop from so you'll get a good idea of the stores from there. Five stars from me for being so organised, pretty and affordable!

The first thing I noticed upon entering The White Company was the gorgeous smell, fresh, floral,…read morespringy, and perfectly suited to the clean, spacious and bright interior. The White Company has a very distinctive style and the clue is in its name, with the majority of their products in varying white, cream and neutral tones. Simple, yet sophisticated, the theme runs throughout their clothing and home ware ranges. Their clothing range is carefully in keeping with the minimalist chic of the brand, think a classier Boden without the often over- enthusiastic brightly-coloured fruit prints. Probably aimed at women in their forties and over, it actually has many pieces which are quite versatile due to their simplicity and could suit a range of ages and tastes. The home ware section included some very pretty bed-spreads and vintage-style quilts and they also bathroom accessories and storage, furniture and a range of gifts. The clothing range extends to children and babies, adding a few splashes of colour to the otherwise neutral palette. There are also some pretty cute soft toys and wooden blocks etc. for babies. The White Company also sells a range of scents for body and home, which I expect were responsible for the yummy smell I described earlier! Overall the products are very tasteful and due to its generally neutral and minimalist style it is a good choice for gift buying as would suit many tastes. Price tags, however, are not average high street though not through the roof either.

Maybe this had something to do with the large toy soldier occupying prime real estate space in the shop's glass front. Exploded toy box is the first impression to be had with Teddy & Co but on further inspection you see that it's a dedicated teddy bear sanctuary, with a heavy leniency on handcrafted cards and baby gifts too. If you're in the market for a collectable bear then Teddy & Co is a good place to start, as it's to my recollection the only place I've seen Steiff bears for sale in Leeds. Steiff's can run as high as you're willing to pay, with the smallest of bears starting at the £100 mark, and standard sizes costing around £400, with limited additions reaching £1300. There are other bear brands aside from Steiff, and by comparison some are less expensive, but by no means are they cheap. I wouldn't be giving one of these bad boys to a kidlet for said kidlet to chew and drool and drag across the floor and just generally ruin, but for collectors it is a nice place with knowledgeable staff who know their bears. For the kidlets Teddy & Co do things like mobiles, personalised plates, nursery/bedroom type decorations, bookends, Winnie the Pooh ornaments, and even letters from Santa and the Tooth Fairy...didn't spot one from the Easter Bunny though.

I looked at the Tooth Fairy Personal reply letters which are absolutely adorable! Any child would surely find it magical to recieve a personal letter from the tooth fairy on the loss of their tooth! The shop basically looks like a childs' wonderland and theres lots to discover and look at. They are the only authorised Steiff R, John Wright and Deans Club store in Leeds so it's worth a visit if only to coo over the cute accessories!

It sells mainly baby clothes, and some very adorable ones at that (though I am a little biased as I am one of those (probably rather irritating) people who practically squeals in adoration at the mere clatter of a pram so I find anything approximating a baby-grow pretty adorable!) Some of the baby grows are padded to the max with detachable mittens to keep little baba toasty and warm even in our recently snowy climate...I actually rather wish they sold them in my size! They also have other baby grows of standard thickness and some rather more grown-up baby clothes...I actually find it rather creepy when a six month old baby boy wears a nicely ironed checked shirt and jeans and has his 3 hairs gelled in a side parting like a terrifying little man...but these clothes also go up to toddler sizes. There is also a tiny hoodie with the word 'skate' emblazoned across the chest...personally I think trying to make your baby look cool is most certainly not cool! Other clothing includes princess-style dresses for tiny baby dolls ...sorry... 'girls', hmm...also not particularly cool. It would make some sense maybe if she's a baby bridesmaid...I remember my little sister aged 10 months looking decidedly spherical and bored in a pink satin dress and matching headband at my aunt's wedding. Haha! The clothes here are very cheap at 2 or 3 pounds for tops or trousers and £9 for an amazing padded baby grow. Great for parents struggling to cope with the financial burden of a new child, though charity shops also often cater well for little ones.

Tribe Records is about as grimey and authentic as you can get. Selling the very best in dancehall,…read morereggae, dubstep and roots as well as more electro and housey stuff, Tribe is the place to be to find some genuine and sometimes very rare underground urban music. Don't be scared off by the slightly hidden entrance way and the sketchy stairs, it all contributes to a humble, unique shopping experience. This shop specialises in vinyls and also sells tickets to some of the best events in town (including the infamous Subdub at the West Indian Centre) meaning its clientele are usually clued up drum and bass elitists who are the real deal. There are also a whole host of event flyers sprinkled around the place for you to peruse and plan your next months worth of activities with. The staff are friendly and always willing to use their extensive knowledge of this music scene to help you find what you're looking for. Though it may not be as big as Jumbo or as varied, that means that Tribe can afford to specialise and stay underground rather than becoming too mainstream. This is Tribe's secret to success.
