For such a prominently-advertised website, it's actually quite a disappointment - greeted by a blank box, you 'enter the site' to find a reasonably pleasant welcoming page (although the assertion that 'every mother and father would like to make their child look trendy with baby clothes and footwear' somewhat put me off - for me 'trendy' is the last way I'd like a future baby to look! Bleeurgh!) But then each nicely labelled section at the top is, upon clicking, found to be empty or non-existent. Oh dear! Anyway, back to non-virtual reality...the actual shop is full to the brim with baby gear - plenty of prams that look to be of good quality and practical, a few car seats and baby toys, and a range of baby and children's clothes. The baby clothes aren't horrifyingly trendy, as the website might lead one to believe with some pretty cute baby grows though there are a few mini-grown-up items. Kidswear is trendier, but then kids these days are probably Facebooking on their iPhones by the time they're out of nappies, and we wouldn't want them to be ridiculed in the playground would we? The prices are pretty cheap here, and in the current money-crunch who could blame new parents for seeking out bargains. But clothes-wise I'd always opt for the trusty old charity shop - at 6 months they're only going to grow out of it in a few weeks anyway. And primary school spent in Oxfam get up never did me any harm...but then I s'pose those were the old days!

I can't really summarise it adequately so I'll just have to go into detail. I came here with some ladies from my work to spend the collection of £150 we'd put together for a colleague we all loved who was going on maternity leave. I was all nonchalant and blasé and 'yeah, babies, whatever, let's just get some bibs and that'. Until I walked through the door. It's like some kind of different world. I wanted to cry within five minutes. My voice was hoarse from all the 'ooohs' and 'aaaahs' and I couldn't stop pointing at all the teeny tiny booties and t shirts and one-sies. A plethora of clothing, accessories, cots, blankets, gadgets, toys and other baby stuff, this place is quite something. There's an upstairs that I don't think I could quite have coped with emotionally (plus we overspent by £30 because we got carried away), but there's prolly lots up there too. If you're expecting, or know someone who is, and feel that you're strong enough, you have to come here

And this is certainly no bad thing, that's for sure. Although I really dislike that particular phrase, 'yummy mummy' (a bit too cutesy and edible, and almost a patronising way of complimenting women) there is nothing to dislike about the shop itself. In fairness too, the shop name is perfectly adequate to describe what you can expect within. It is a unique concept boutique, which aims to provide mothers with comfortable and fashionable attractive night wear and accessories. Inside you will find all kinds of delightful items, from jewellery to handbags to clothing to accessories, in a beautifully thought out and specially design collection. It's clear from their designs, and from their website, that a lot of passion, creativity and tireless work has gone into making their boutique what it is! Not everything there is to my taste, but these things are always 'each to their own', and I can't actually flaw the product within. From hand made leather brooches, to cute floral reusable PVC bags, to fabric cupcake pin cushions - everything is quirky and delightful! Just reading their ethos on the website is enough to make you fall in love with their work. It seems their aim is to try to change the attitude that once women become mothers they cease to exist sexually, aesthetically and in terms of femininity - a very flawed and painful attitude that continues to rob mothers of their confidence and self worth today. For that alone these guys deserve one hundred stars! They also do yearly charity work, which for an indie shop is truly great (as we all know how indie shops must struggle themselves!) and they even have some great quotes from strong women on their site. All in all, this is a business that will grow and grow, and I look forward to watching this space!

I am also without clues when it comes to birthday gifts, christenings, Christmas, Easter, or general kidlet visitations, the staff at Mamas and Papas are amazing. From attempting to sort myself out with a gift and then getting really rather desperate through second guessing myself, and swearing to myself and my friends that I'd definitely seen something here...I think, a lovely lady came over to me, ensuring that she didn't mean to pry but was there anything she could help me with. I told her I was crap at this sort of thing, and she took the key statistics; sex, age, occasion, time required to sort a gift, public transport or in the car, that sort of thing, and then suggested a few things to me, and walked me around the rather large store to point out what was within range and appropriate for my friend's new bundle of joy. She explained the important stuff, especially where the baby clothes and blankets and bedding stuff was concerned, all good for even the most sensitive of babies. I recalled I'd seen something I'd like for the kid and I couldn't see it, so she enlisted the help of another shop bod and they got to work on looking for the item in question, and then trawled through the store catalogue, and then hit the internet version, spotted it, said that I could have it personalized and delivered to the store, that way I could check it before I had no way of bringing it back. There was no being pushy or rude, just genuinely trying to help me and my issue and my lack of competance at dealing with newborns. Navigating the store there was pretty much everything you could think of in the way of babies and expectant mothers. With "rooms" set up in character themes, displaying cots, blankets, bedding, baby clothes and baby gear of all varieties, to give the idea of what it all would look like in your own home. Got another kidlet on the way soon, and for this little treasure I will be back to Mamas and Papas to get some staff help and a baby gift.

It is always fully stocked with anything and everything you could need for the coming birth of your baby to the early years of their lives to toddler. You can get your baby naming books/cots/pushchairs/clothes/nappies, etc here and a good range of maternity clothes too. They have recently opened an early learning centre inside this store too so that is a plus now too. They have baby changing and feeding facilities and a nice seating area to the side for you and their toilets while not on the cleanest side are the only ones down forster square. The staff are nice and friendly but there doesnt seem to be enough to go round but the ones there are do their best while being rushed off their feet. Also if you buy a car seat from them they will go to your car and fit it for you which is good.

It caters purely for that very specific and yet essential need - all things baby. It is a humungous store situated right on top of the awful Harehills junction; the nightmare one with several specific no-right-turns etc which make me so glad that I'm not a driver. I think that it is literally just off this junction could be my only negative point about the store - but then again, that's not the end of the world! Inside there is literally everything you could possibly need to make life easier, better and more manageable for you and baby. They have a number of branded items (ones which mean little to me, not being a mother) such as Bugaboo, Chicco, Britax, Maclaren and much more. There are a number of different baby transportation devices - prams, buggies, basically 3-4 wheeled items of a large variety! It sells mainly baby clothes, and some very adorable ones at that (though I am a little biased as I am one of those (probably rather irritating) people who practically squeals in adoration at the mere clatter of a pram so I find anything approximating a baby-grow pretty adorable!) Some of the baby grows are padded to the max with detachable mittens to keep little baba toasty and warm even in our recently snowy climate...I actually rather wish they sold them in my size! They also have other baby grows of standard thickness and some rather more grown-up baby clothes...I actually find it rather creepy when a six month old baby boy wears a nicely ironed checked shirt and jeans and has his 3 hairs gelled in a side parting like a terrifying little man...but these clothes also go up to toddler sizes. There is also a tiny hoodie with the word 'skate' emblazoned across the chest...personally I think trying to make your baby look cool is most certainly not cool! Other clothing includes princess-style dresses for tiny baby dolls ...sorry... 'girls', hmm...also not particularly cool. It would make some sense maybe if she's a baby bridesmaid...I remember my little sister aged 10 months looking decidedly spherical and bored in a pink satin dress and matching headband at my aunt's wedding. Haha! The clothes here are very cheap at 2 or 3 pounds for tops or trousers and £9 for an amazing padded baby grow. Great for parents struggling to cope with the financial burden of a new child, though charity shops also often cater well for little ones.
