'It's all about the confidence,' says Gok Wan. 'Come on ladies, embrace those bangers.' I don't…read morefind anything remotely attractive about equating breasts with sausages, and Gok should know the difference, considering the amount he's grabbed over the years. Wouldn't it be funny if his gay demeanour was just a facade and he's secretly been perving all these years. No, NO, it wouldn't, I'm sorry. It would mean many women with low self-esteem were violated. Tut. Ahem. Moving swiftly on, Dotty P's as the brunette calls it has had something of an invigoration. I don't know if it was at the hands of Gok, but what was once a sea of beige and off-white which would entice my grandmother but make me seethe has become a card-carrying member of the fashionista set. Yes, there are military jackets. There are platform heels. There are nautical stripes, junk jewels and delightful scarves. And the brunette is a massive fan. In fact she got me all last year's birthday presents from Dot's, and I loved them. If you're tired of Topshop and naffed off with New Look, Dot's is a great and rather calming alternative. The clothes regularly appear in the likes of More and Look magazine as great budget options, and the sales are truly incredible. Little black leather moccasins from £20 down to a fiver? Get in. Just get in quicker than I did, they've only got size 5 left, darn it. And the maternity wear, lingerie and nightwear is pretty too. This Arndale branch is a decent size with a really great range. Dotty P's has changed for the better. Let's hope it stays this way.

This Dorothy Perkins is pretty big and has a walk through to the next door 'Evans' store. Inside…read moreyou'll find a good range of ladies clothing and accessories with lots of sale rails, offers and reasonable prices. Dotty P's has enjoyed a recent surge in popularity and the shop has always been busy when I've gone in - it has definitely shrugged off it's mumsy/work-wear reputation and now stocks a good variety of young fashions, formal wear, work clothes and maternity clothing. My girlfriend is always keen to pay a visit as it is one of the few high street chains to stock 'tall' sizes which extend into plus sizes without the stigma of having to visit an entirely different section of the shop. Hooray for shops with no size-ist apartheid.

Oh my gosh. I have no idea where a place like this springs from, especially in the LS8 post code,…read moreand yet here it is standing proud. For some of the most high end designer clothes, outside of Harvey Nichols, this is absolutely the shop to browse. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I literally spent about five minutes here as I was so daunted by the price tags. I was, after all, weighed down by a cumbersome ugly rucksack, dirty shoes and a red world-weary face from my travels that day. The lady, who I assumed to be the manager, greeted me very kindly even though she was busy with another customer so I thought that was really nice. Not even close to the reception I'd had in some of the other high end shops, as she was warm and friendly and didn't seem phased by my disheveled appearance one iota. In spite of that I only had to touch one of the beautifully designed dresses to realise that it cost £800 and I instantly became convinced that my hands were covered in grease and had left some kind of grubby mark on the collar. Perhaps this was the paranoia of being in a high end shop. I felt like at any given moment my rucksack may catch an entire display and put me into more debt than my student loan. There is a beautiful range of clothing, accessories and shoes inside this wonderfully laid out shop. They cater for men too, just as exquisitely, but as you may have gleaned by now - we are talking *high end* clothing here. My most coveted item, a jacket costing £300 odd, almost seems cheap in comparison to the dress I first glanced at! In any case, though I really thought highly of the design and the service, there is no possible way I could afford to spend money in here! Lovely, but definitely a place to save up for.
