We stopped at the gatehouse after exiting the Biltmore estate. It was during Christmas time and the…read moreseasonal displays were very nice. The shop is filled with home goods, ornaments and Biltmore related items but the whole atmosphere came off as quite pretentious to me and the prices reflected that. I did find an adorable little plushie gargoyle that I thought my niece would love but based on my overall experience, I decided against spending any of my hard-earned money here. The staff was technically welcoming but not in a warm or genuine way. I felt like I was being more closely observed than assisted and the older, stiffer employees created an uncomfortable environment. After looking around upstairs, I came down and started perusing the shelves but as soon as I looked up from what I was doing and a staff member saw me she said " your husband is in the restroom". I don't know if that comes off as weird in writing as it felt in person. I didn't ask where my husband was and I wasn't looking for him. I don't know if it was because he was the only non-white person I saw while we were there, but it didn't give the feeling that they were trying to be helpful. The shop is somewhat visually appealing but overpriced overall and definitely lacking the warmth that would make it a place I would ever return to.

I really liked this gift shop located just outside the main gate of the Biltmore estate (just to…read morethe left as you turn in from the main road). It's larger than it appears from the outside with a full loft upstairs loaded, when we were there in Aug 2023, with sale items. They have a small area with wines from the winery, decor and housewares, clothing, jewelry, and various other seasonal items like tea cups, Christmas decor and tableware, and some outdoor clothing and hats. We had a great time inside browsing and I found a cute little Halloween gnome for 50% off. Ladies inside were friendly and chatty while we shopped.

We did the pub tour, which started at 4pm. I chose this tour to start our trip to see some things and get a feel for the city, and moreover, my other half and I are absolutely horrific about capturing images of ourselves, period. Plus, we are Floridians- this setting provided foliage, art, and cold weather clothing we so seldom see or use!Kristin's tour allowed us the opportunity to take care of that & start our immersion Into the unique city we really loved. Kristin was a great communicator throughout- my inquiries prior to booking, we had some interesting weather that could have hindered our tour (rain and a 30 degree temp drop within 2.5 hours) & she was kind enough to call and provide options, our follow up email & image sharing has been amazing! Our photos have come back and we can't say enough about them. She's got a great eye for capturing subjects and the essence of Asheville. I highly recommend, when we go back to Asheville, I plan to book another tour with her.

Speaking of privilege, a lot of that here. Went to see a show in the balcony the other night and it was a nice experience. Definitely wear a lot of the older wealthier Asheville citizens gather. Certainly a crowd here. Could've also been the event we went to which was a cultural performance. Ultimately, I appreciate that we have cultural performances in our city and a space for them. Parking was a little annoying just because it was Saturday downtown but I do like the space is central. Lots of places to eat at around. Finding it was incredibly easy as well. Inside, there was quite a bottleneck as we arrived about 20 minutes before the show. We did have to wait in line. It was a little bit confusing to figure out exactly where to go but some staff helped. They had wine for sale- house and pricier stuff. The house was around nine dollars a glass. I really appreciate that the staff helped us shoes and gave their opinion. The staff working the wine area was incredibly kind. The stage itself was gorgeous. It was very easy to see in here, no matter where you were.
