From the moment I walked in, I was met with the most genuine and welcoming customer service from Erica and Patricia, who turned what could have been a routine shopping trip into an inspiring and unforgettable experience. Patricia was incredibly kind and attentive while helping me find supplies, and when I shared that I was building an art portfolio for my SCAD application, her encouragement was beyond anything I expected. Normally, I'm not comfortable showing my work to others, but there was something so warm and authentic about Patricia's spirit that I took a leap and shared a few of my completed pieces. Her reaction--her eyes lighting up as she pointed out specific details she loved--made me pause and truly see my own work in a new way. As my own worst critic, this was a moment I'll never forget. I may or may not have given her a surprise hug in my excitement, but she was just that awesome! Then there's Erica--an absolute gem! Her bright, sparkling eyes when talking about art techniques and supplies showed just how passionate she is, not just as an artist but as someone who truly loves her job. Even though she was busy helping other customers, she never made me feel like an inconvenience. She took her time, answered all my questions, and we even geeked out over the dream of owning a set of luxurious Caran D'Ache colored pencils one day! Her patience, knowledge, and enthusiasm made my shopping experience an absolute delight. Coming to Jerry's felt like fate--like the universe placed me there at just the right time to receive the encouragement I needed from Patricia and Erica. From the things you would expect to find for sale anywhere down to the things that are only just shy of trash, depending on your personal criteria. I particularly love the bucket loads of stationery and stickers, and the literal shelf loads of assorted random boxes. Your donations and your purchases all give back to the community in some way. They even have an entire maker space style workshop making up the back half of the building where I assume they also do trainings and workshops. And even their prices are so reasonable that a little bit of pocket change can go a long way. The only complaint I can even come up with is that they aren't open long enough.

There is a price checker in the store, but the cable is cut on it so it does not work. When I spoke to an associate, she said that they are encouraging people to use the app for price checking. So, I downloaded the app and didn't immediately see how to price check in it. I work with technology for a living, so usually I can navigate systems pretty well. However, the path to the price checker is through the search bar, and then the small scan icon in the top right. There is no button that says price check, or anything that would be obvious to a typical app user. The associate helping me find the price check in the app seemed less than thrilled to help. I think it's because she frequently gets this question and that suspicion was confirmed when I spoke to some other customers while we were in line who were also had negative experiences. So, after having downloaded the app, I went back to attempt to price check the items. Only about half of them came up with prices when I scanned them. So, I took a cart of mystery items to the front. When in line, the cashier said multiple times to the line that they can use self check out. However, that was not an option for me because the prices were very much up in the air, and I wasn't going to go alone at self check out and hope for the best. Overall, I think that there's an opportunity for Michael's to cater to the (older) demographic that shops there by offering a simple to use price checker in the store. At bare minimum, they need to work on their app design. In terms of the store, layout and general quality of merchandise, it was a very typical experience when it comes to craft stores. The full price items were incredibly expensive and the clearance items, once I found out how much they were, were incredibly inexpensive. So, put on your math hat, download the app, and be ready for a slightly frustrating experience if you want to shop here.

On this visit, we bought a picture frame, got home opened it up, and it was too flimsy to even hold what we bought it for. Another annoying detail is their weekly sales. It seems everything in the store is generally on sale for 40-50% off every other week. So if you go to buy something and it's not on sale, it probably will be in a few days. They are clearly making a profit even when things are on sale, I wish they would just offer the sale pricing all the time. Open only during the week from 12noon - 5pm does make it a bit tough to enjoy but there are times they are open later due to classes or show receptions.
