Everything we had from the herring appetizer and salad to our entrees, German beers and wine was authentic and wonderful. The restaurant is not very big so reservations are helpful. With it being mid-week we didn't think we would need reservations but the bartender that seated us quickly let us know since we didn't have a reservation we'd have to sit at a bar high-top. It wasn't said in an inviting way and the vibe from this particular employee/manager/owner (??) unfortunately permeated the entire evening. Because we were seated in the bar area, which was entirely fine with us, we overheard frequent swearing in general and what should have been more private convos between her and various wait staff as they came to retrieve their drinks for their tables. We advised the waitress it was my friend's first time eating German food and my friend asked several questions just to seek clarification. The waitress didn't engage with any enthusiasm, so I proceeded to guide my friend at that point. The food was a solid 3, warm and decent, but nothing special and not much seemed to be made in house based entirely on the appearance and taste. Was the experience awful? No. Would I return? Also no. It was adequate for two folks that were hungry, but it was not the experience we had envisioned or hoped for.

The…read moreplace is much bigger than it looks when you first walk in, and it definitely got busy and filled up just after 6. The service was great given the size of the place & how busy they were. I was going to order a cider and the server could tell I wasn't so sure, so she offered a sample. I ended up liking it and ordering one, but love that they do that as an option! My friend and I wanted just about everything in the menu & decided to share a couple things. We started with the Poutine. It was good, but a bit light on the cheese curds and on the saltier side. Maybe on purpose cause we were in the bar area? lol. Don't get me wrong, we still pretty much ate all of it. Then we split a burger and opted for a side of Mac-n-cheese rather than getting more fries. The burger was tender and really good, and the mac-n-cheese was amazing! I can't really tell you why, just creamy goodness that hit the spot. Try it for yourself and see if you can explain it. We ordered some Ruebens to go and our teens devoured them! So sadly I didn't get a chance to sample the Ruben, just the delicious crispy homemade chips that came with. Already planning for next time we're up there - we want to some Pierogis & the Prime Rib panini. Just wish there was a Pierogi sampler on the menu!

The appetizer was the hummus. Everything was fresh and tasty. Definitely, we will get back to this place when we get close to this area.

We were a party of 2 and asked to sit outside. The hostess had a table quickly cleaned off for us and were sat within 2 minutes - it's beautiful outside - love the little sting lights, mountain/hills and got to see several trains pass through. Our server was fantastic - I didn't catch his name, but very attentive and friendly. When we ordered the Charcuterie Board, he said we wouldn't be disappointed and he was right. Not only was the presentation impressive - love the wooden boards- it was generous amounts! Two large cheeses (Fontina and Brie), two types of meats (prosciutto and a spicy salami type), candied walnuts, blueberries, mix of Kalamata and green olives, fig jam, and baguette. Great quality, great quantity, and so good! We ended up taking about a 1/3 of it home with us and enjoyed next day with sourdough from Bolivar Bread. The food at other tables looked just as delicious. I'd absolutely return next time I'm back in Harper's Ferry.

The table had an umbrella, so we were able to enjoy the outdoors without being in the sun. We ordered the Cobb Salad ($20) and Red Rice and Hemp Burger ($15) with a side salad instead of fries (additional $2 for the salad). The Cobb salad was very good. Large portion with big chunks of moist chicken. The salad was fresh and tasty. Italian dressing was good. The "Hemp" Burger was a new one on me, but essentially i understand it is a rice-based burger with Hemp seeds for protein. It comes in a large bun with caramelized onion and bbq sauce. I liked it. It has a mild flavor, the patty is pretty soft and the combination of flavors was very pleasant. The "side" salad was large and very fresh. I enjoyed the vinaigrette very much. Unfortunately, our server went AWOL after dropping off our food. We had a question and he wasn't around. My water glass was empty and no sight. My partner's water glass was empty for a while and - I kept looking around - but no sighting. I finally did something I hate to do, which is to call over another server, but we both were thirsty and needed something to drink. That server was very nice and promptly came over with a water pitcher for us. The bad service really wrecked what was otherwise a good meal in a nice atmosphere. So, here's the thing. I considered giving 3 stars for this review based on the service. (We actually thought the server had quit - it was ridiculous - the place wasn't crowded at all.). But, the other servers in the area were working really hard and one did come over quickly to help out, so I'm going to hope for the best. I do want to send a message in this review to the restaurant that this did leave a bad feeling. I doubt we'll be back. Too bad.
