We had heard a couple of rave reviews of this place and decided it was time to check it out. Friday night, bookings for 6 or more only, an hours wait for a table (sigh). I tried to tempt the maitre de with a bribe but no dice. So we wandered around and stumbled across The Roosevelt, a silver lining since it was on my list to try anyways. More on that next. Meanwhile, back at Apollo, we got a table after about 45 minutes. First impressions are a somewhat contrived un decorated look, with exposed wires and pipes and gaps in the paintwork where walls used to be. A second glance reveals that the place is full of terribly well dressed and trendy folks with clearly too much money all having a whale of a time! Micro mini skirts and high heels abound, along with blokes in tight shirts and the metro mohawk look. O well. The menu is basic Greek fare with a few twists not usually seen here, the wine list average, with a cocktail list that's a little different. Of course you can't go Greek without having lamb, which we did, and also the pork, accompanied by a Greek salad and some pita bread. Amazingly our food arrived before our drinks, and in no time we were tucking into lovely soft lamb with yoghurt sauce and warm pita bread served in a cardboard box - kinda funky but a bit wasteful I thought. She thought the lamb was a bit fatty, and it was! Delicious! And the pork, likewise very tender and tasty. The salad was average, but then it is hard to make anything special of a Greek salad, I'll grant you that. Eventually our drinks arrived, which kept us going while we we busy people watching as a steady flow of folks coming and going keeps the place very busy. Outside on the pavement there is a rowing band of wandering foodies waiting for a table. All in all a nice spot, but we actually waited longer for a table than we spent in the restaurant, maybe our bad as we didn't have desert. I'd go again but take 5 friends so we can book! read more

I've been here twice now and both times the table has ordered "the full Greek," which is their version of a tasting menu. At $55 per person I'm convinced it's one of the best kept secrets in Sydney. All of us left STUFFED with a massive doggie bag as well. You start with olives and a mullet roe dip/pita bread. The dip is good (not too fishy) but don't make the rookie mistake I did and fill up on the bread. I promise the even better stuff is yet to come, like the melted ooey gooey saganaki cheese skillet that is to DIE FOR. The lamb shoulder and chat potatoes are considered the main dishes and do not disappoint; although by this time you'll be unbuttoning your pants and wishing you hadn't eaten anything earlier in the day. By the time dessert came I could only take a couple of bites- I'm not big into greek desserts and would rather have had more cheese, but it was a nice finish to the meal. Great wine selection (and great range of price points for bottles), great service- only downside would be that you can't book a table if you're under 6 people and this place is packed, so if you are going at a popular time you may have to wait. I think I'm slightly obsessed with Greek food! Earlier this year I tried Alpha and absolutely loved it and now I can say I'm a huge fan of Apollo too. I can't decide which I love more. The food, service and ambience are impressive at both restaurants. Alpha is more on the sophisticated side, where Apollo has an understated, contemporary, urban feel. Both amazing! Here's the low down on Apollo... Chef Johnathan Barthelmess, former head chef of Manly Pavillion The Vibe This elegantly simple, yet highly impactful minimalistic restaurant is situated on the corner of Macleay St and Crick Ave. Peering through the glowing arched windows before walking in, I was so surprised to see the place was absolutely packed at 7.30pm on a Monday. Inside - unfinished concrete walls, oversized rustic pillars and an exposed off-white painted ceiling. Will impress This place is great for group bookings; the restaurant caters for larger groups really well. Reservations are only accepted for groups of 6 or more and there's a very generous and affordable set menu to simplify the bill split. I however came here for a casual dinner date for two, which I would also recommend. We only had to wait 10mins to be seated at the candle lit marble bar to begin our Greek feast. The bar area is a little small if you're ordering multiple dishes (which you will be as most dishes are to share); luckily the staff are very quick to remove finished plates. Unfortunately, this means Marc J, Louis or Givenchy will need to be seated on the floor as there are no hooks either. Spend $$$ Mains are between $25-$35. The $55 set menu is exceptional value Dress Code Keep it casual but modern. Opted for clean cuts like a tailored jacket (love the over the shoulder look) or a shirt. Food WOW -We (Evan too!) love the food here. We got a bit greedy and wanted to try as much food as possible so we went for the set menu. Can I just say it's a hell of a lot of food for two people (9 dishes). I'm salivating just thinking about it. My favourites were: The taramasalata is smooth and slightly sour, served with a side of warm herbed pita bread - Divine! The saganakI is a dream, it comes sizzling hot, inside: soft and salty, outside: the crispy grilled layer is sweet (honey) and tangy (lemon & oregano). The slow cooked lamb is so tender, it just breaks into pieces and it's nicely complimented by the garlic yoghurt, lemon and lamb juice... To die for! The roast chat potatoes are a must if you're ordering the lamb. The original set menu comes with the walnuts filo pastry coffee cream but we changed ours to loukoumades (honey doughnuts) , they were really fluffy inside and crisp on the outside, however I wasn't a huge fan of the lemon, honey cinnamon flavouring. The lemon spoiled it for me and alone it's a dry dished, the yoghurt is not enough, instead I would have liked some ice cream on the side. Drinks To drink, make sure you order the Pearsephone (ketel one, st germain elderflower, pear coriander), such a beautiful aroma. It's dangerously easy to drink! If you're not planning on an early night, you must try the All Press espresso! The coffee is so smooth and full bodied. Makes you wish they were open for my morning coffee. Love Bangers x read more

They do Greek dishes with a modern twist and everything is so flavoursome! I've been here a few times and it does not disappoint. I loved the lamb, octopus, pita bread, Greek salad, Loukemades... Most things on the menu! The atmosphere is nice and friendly too! read more

On a Saturday night when some form of sporting event had the whole city out and about, there was a wait of over an hour for a table here. But the wait was well worth it; the Apollo has some truly delicious Greek food, and strikes a great balance with simple food in a higher-end setting. A highlight was the Saganaki; the addition of honey and oregano was fantastic, it's definitely one to try. The grilled calamari with olives, tomato and eggplant was also very, very good. The roasted lamb shoulder melted in my mouth, and honestly tasted like it had been made with love - a total cuddle of a dish. The staff were friendly, attentive and downright lovely to chat to, and when we couldn't finish a few dishes, they bundled them up into a cute brown paper package that my mother would describe as "smart". I would definitely go back to the Apollo, which is saying something, because I live 875km away. Enjoy! read more

Excellent mains, very flavourful and with plenty of high quality protein. Top notch presentation, and service at the bar was also really good, professional and friendly. Slightly disappointed by the Loukoumades. Yes, fresh donuts, but they were somewhat lacking in flavour, perhaps due to a dearth of honey/yogurt/pistachios. If I wanted to eat bread I'd have done it earlier in the meal, although I admire the skill required in making non-greasy donuts. Seating is a little tight, but I can understand that considering rent in that location and the fact they are very popular. Mix of ladies who lunch and business lunches. Not many casual diners. Jonathan Barthelmess formerly of Manly's Pavilion Restaurant and Longrain's Sam Christie teamed up recently to open Australian Greek restaurant, The Apollo. Housed in an art deco building in trendy Potts Point, The Apollo is a bustling, minimalist space, which pays homage to the Greek landscape, with a somewhat dusty interior, featuring unfinished concrete and marble in subdued grey tones. Making the most of the arched windows, but with virtually no artwork hanging on the walls, and little colour, you may expect the restaurant to feel cold, yet somehow, even without the usual adornments, the warmth of The Apollo shines through. This evening, I have the pleasure of dining at The Chefs table. I make my way through the busy restaurant, past the kitchen and I find The Chefs Table. Part family dining table, part kitchen and part pantry, dining at The Chefs table provides the perfect vantage point to learn a thing or two about the inside workings of a restaurant kitchen. The table comfortably sits up to 12 people. Following the Greek tradition, the food at The Apollo is designed to be shared. We dine on the Apollo's Feast Menu at $75 pp: Olives Pickles Taramasalata mullet roe dip Warm pita bread Braised ox-tail kritharaka tomato skordalia Slow cooked lamb rib and loin Grilled market fish Greek winter salad fennel carrot beans feta olives Fried okra vinegar mint Roast potatoes garlic herbs Walnuts filo pastry coffee cream Whilst the food is all good, my favourite dish is the braised ox-tail. This is not a dish I would normally order, but I was pleasantly surprised. I must admit, I also enjoyed the Taramasalata mullet roe dip, again not something I would usually order. There is certainly a lot of food and you will not be left hungry! I thoroughly enjoyed my experience dining at the Chef's Table at The Apollo and I highly recommend it! Trendy hip restaurant. We sat at the bar which is always fun. The staff gave great recommendations and everything we had was delicious. It can be quite rich tough and portions are large so keep that in mind. Would definitely go back or recommend to a friend. read more

The halloumi with honey is what keeps me coming back to the Apollo, the lamb is also fabulous and their cocktails. Very trendy place, but be prepared to wait for a table, they don't take bookings for small numbers and they are always busy! We had the Saganaki (a method of preparing halloumi or other similar cheeses by frying them quickly with honey and herbs) followed by the octopus, calamari, iceberg salad, and eggplant salad. They were (nearly*) all superb and some of the best Greek food I've ever tasted. The seafood, in particular, was very tender and full of flavor without being powerful. The full-flavours of the seafood paired perfectly with the iceberg. (*Some of the eggplant seemed to have been a bit over-salted, but that can happen occasionally - no big deal.). We had a Cretan white wine by the glass, which although expensive, was also great. The service was prompt - we were in and out in just over an hour. The waitress was attentive, but not overfly friendly. You get use to that in Sydney - they are professionals and they don't see the need to fawn over you to get tips like they do in the US (where we live). That's what happens when you pay people a decent salary - they just get on with it! One small note: I wouldn't bring elderly for a family- or large-meal. The music and din are quite loud. For one on one, it's fine but otherwise would be difficult to hear. read more

Stopped in for a light lunch; we weren't in Sydney for long, and my wife wanted to get some good lamb. We and our friend shared a calamari special, octopus, greek salad and the lamb shoulder. Calamari was fine but nothing special. The octopus was wonderful, on a par with the best we've had, the preparation with, I believe, fennel, onions olives, etc, was fabulous. Excellent, fresh salad; but the lamb was probably the best we've ever had. The raving reviews were right! We ate outside, on the cool, shady sidewalk; very glad we did, the indoor dining room (at 2 on a Sunday afternoon) was quite loud. read more

We had a ball!!! We came in late on a Friday night without a booking- sat at the bar and ordered a cocktail to get things started. Sophie- our waitress picked up on our 'newby' status and offered to order for us. She was fantastic- kept the drinks and food coming. We had the honey cheese thing- highly recommend it! And the ox-tail thing- also REALLY good! We had such a great time and happily rolled out of there around midnight. I think it was about $100 each for everything- including some kind of Pine Tree Spirit drink?? Which was also really good. Looking forward to going again. read more

Outstanding food is worth the wait for a table - go for the octopus starter, lamb main and lemon meringue desert. The latest evictees from the Big Brother show were there on the night we visited which made the place feel tacky and touristy. Great location with great dining environment. Although not so familiar with greek food, we went there so many times,mainly for the grilled cheese and pitta bread. The grilled pig shoulder is good as well. However, too salty for majority of other dishes that we could not get used to. Price is all right. read more

Our third visit to The Apollo in as many months, and it never disappoints! Last night, we had the dips, calamari and lamb - all were delicious. That honey & cheese dish is out of this world. We we sad to see that the Barramundi had disappeared from the menu, replaced by Tuna. Maybe a seasonal thing. Wait staff were, as usual, amazing and helpful. This restaurant is one of the very few where I willingly leave a tip for such good service. read more

The food was OK, the Cheese Honey Oregan and the Fried King Prawns are worth having again; however nothing else served to our table was memorable. We were the first sitting for a Saturday night and the delivery of our nine dishes (table of six) was literally one on top of another. It was in short, fast food. Traditional Greek food with a trendy spin. Jam packed with locals and tourists alike. Literally nothing bad on the menu. For something new, try the orzo with fried breadcrumbs. I enjoyed a fantastic dinner with friends at The Apollo last night. Being a Saturday night we had a little over an hour wait for our table (no reservations taken) - but it was worth every minute. We started with Saganaki Cheese Honey Oregano and Warm Pita Bread. I'd never had Saganaki before and was floored by the stringy cheese texture and amazing honey oregano pairing - a flavor combination I would have never thought of but found incredibly delicious. For my entree, I ordered the Apollo Sausages Chickpeas Saffron which was flavorful, hearty, and perfectly portioned. The sausages were fantastic, not at all greasy and delightfully flavored with fennel. I had the pleasure of enjoying a few bites of my dining partner's entree of Oven Baked Lamb Shoulder Lemon Greek Yoghurt which was an absolute standout of the meal and what I would order if I were to return (unless I felt up to the appetite challenge associated with the prix fixe Full Greek meal!) The lamb fell from the bone and melted in my mouth, the lemon greek yoghurt was a fantastic creamy pairing to the decadent meat. Another dining partner enjoyed the Grilled Snapper Broccoli Capers Mint and while I didn't try any, she said it was fantastic and ended the night with a clean plate. All said, a phenomenal meal with friendly above average service. I'd highly recommend The Apollo! read more

Absolutely loved the meal! Was a little hesitant based on location and parking but found prime position! The meal was fantastic, the special for the night was squid which was so flavoursome and the lamb with the various sides was beautiful!
