I have to admit that I love the art-deco style of architecture (or is it art-nuveau - I'm never…read morequite sure which is which, so I'll just stick with art-deco, even though it probably makes me sound like an uninformed twat). This is one of those pubs that I wandered into while exploring Sydney's eastern suburbs and sure enough I absolutely adore it. In a way it seems to accommodate everybody, whether you are have been a regular since the 1940s, or you are young and vibrant and looking for some great craft beer (much like me, well, except for the young bit that is). Oh, and the staff are pretty cool as well.

I went for a cheeky pub lunch today. I was impressed with the selection of condiments at the kitchen counter - so many mustards in ceramic jars. The staff at the bar were friendly but the kitchen weren't in too much of a hurry to feed me. When our burgers came out, they were very pretty: shiny brioche bun, pickle on top, but after the first bite I knew they weren't going to live up to their looks. The patty was a little dry and pretty flavourless (?underseasoned). The chips had good crunch but again lacked flavour. We sat out in the beer garden which is more a box to keep smokers in than anything else. I will probably be back, but won't be wasting my time with the burgers again.

Then again, I guess it might also be the case that I am a pretty harsh reviewer, but I guess that is why I do end up fitting in with Yelp. Anyway, as I mentioned, there really wasn't all that much about this pub that stood out, but I don't necessarily want to say that it is particularly bad either. It was a nice pub, but nothing special.

I live around the corner and have been there several times and only once have I scored a reasonable (not good) meal. That was a chicken snitzel. Now how hard is it to get a chicken snitzel right? ...seriously Got to be the easiest meal in the world to get right. Well not the last time I ordered it there. Firstly it was a whopping $18 which is not exactly cheap for a basic Chicken snitzel meal. Secondly they wanted another $2 for sauce (yes even gravy) and everyone knows you get gravy, mushroom or pepper sauce included in the snitzel price (usually). Thirdly they wanted another $3 to change my sides from chips and salad to mash and vegetables. Now everyone knows you serve snitzel with mash (and gravy) but not this place. And my friends did NOT get a $3 discount to change thier sides from veg to chips and salad. So that puts a basic el-cheapo chicken sntizel at $23... Seriously. But it only gets better (worse). I said forget the upgrades. Just give it to me as it comes with the salad and chips. Well I have never ever had such a horrible chicken snitzrel in my life. Very dry and tough as old shoe leather. Completely tasteless too. And the chips too were just as bad. One friend had one of the pies and only ate half complaining it was no good. The other two had the barramundi and whilst they found it edible they were not impressed vowing not to come here again. So there you go. 4 out of 4 easy to please folks just wrote this place off. So from a Randwick local of many years I can tell you straight in the face..... By all means feel free to have a beer there but...... DO NOT EAT AT THE COACH & HORSES HOTEL BISTRO no matter how many times they change the name. Its always the same.

After reading the Daily Telegraph article titled "American food pitches up: The cuisine of Major…read moreLeague Baseball arrives in Sydney" in relation to American cuisine popping up in Sydney, I decided I should check out a couple of places on the list. The first place that stood out was Coogee Diggers. Wow! Who would have thought. After doing a little extra research, the pic of the menu on their website was too small to read but when I did make it larger I didn't notice any real American fare on the apart from ribs. I figured because they had opened the Bunker Bar maybe they had a separate menu, so i thought i'd check it out and go watch the footy at the same time. I rocked up into my old neighbourhood remembering my last visit to Coogee Diggers for a trivia night about 2 years ago. It has been revamped since then and is looking a little more swish now with the open air lounge area and the Bunker Bar downstairs. A new bar that is filled pin ball machines and to my surprise there are actual pinball leagues where they compete to decide who the best is. Walking in there kind of gave me an "Over The Top" Stallone sort of feel except with less muscular, however no less passionate people who love their pinball. Unfortunately I found no menus down there and nothing on a chalk bar indicating there was any sort of American style food in the place. Already slightly disappointed I wandered upstairs into the bistro area and was again disappointed to see they only American style food was ribs - eh I wasn't here for ribs... I wanted WINGS! and a killer CHEESEBURGER! Despite the terrible news I put on a brave face and didn't begrudge them because they weren't trying to mislead me, it was the Daily Telegraph who had mislead me. I ordered their Beef Burger and added the egg and bacon - I think it should have probably already been on the burger. It included everything you'd expect on an Aussie Burger, so I was expecting an okay burger but nothing special. The burger was ready in approximately 20 minutes and as I walked up to the kitchen to pick it up, I was impressed with the size. If I had 3 hands, it probably wouldn't have been enough to secure it without it spilling out anywhere. It definitely required a man to handle this burger as it looks a little too messy for the fairer sex. The combination of ingredients is always a winner however I was disappointed with the beef. Another soul crushing patty that had destroyed the flavour of the main ingredient. I was impressed upon opening the burger and watching the melted cheese pull away from the well cooked fried egg. This was food porn at it's best. The damper style bun was a nice change from the usual, but extremely filling along with the side of hot chips. Definitely a good experience, almost ruined by misinformation from this particular article who hasn't provided me with any feed back to date.
