Canton is home to my favorite bakery, and whenever I'm in town I make a point to stop at The Alchemist Baker. My favorite indulgence there is the chocolate hazelnut rugelach, a melt-in-your-mouth taste experience. I usually buy a bunch, then take them home, slice them in half (to pace myself!) and freeze them. They freeze beautifully. Honestly, I have not had something there I didn't like, including the coffees. It's a great place to hang, and the staff is always warm and welcoming. It's definitely nice to have this cute bakery in town. We had an apple maple cake there recently that was absolutely insane. The cake itself was so solid and moist and lovely and then you hit the icing.. and then you hit the maple on the icing... They also have some interesting coffee/tea drinks - but the real event here is the baked goods. The beverages are not bad, but they are there to support the baked goods. We've had many a delicious baked good here, both sweet and savory, and we get a different one every time. I love the whimsical decor and the fact that that they have a full bookshelf for kiddos to enjoy. I also appreciate that they support other small local businesses. They always have a table with locally made cards, jewelry and soaps, and dog treats from Mookie's. Sometimes they will have someone with a booth set up selling their crafts. Wish they were open on Sundays because that is usually when my husband wants to go. read more

Adorable and lovely small bakery in Canton - first off, it's named after the fan-favorite book, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho which is very cool. Also, the pastries & cakes here are AMAZING. The lady behind the counter was so sweet and recommended we try their Salted Caramel Chocolate Chip cookie. It was no joke one of the best cookies I've ever had. It was sweet, salty, and crisp yet soft within. The almond tea cake was moist and delicious, same for the pistachio cake. The only downside are their drinks are very mediocre. My boyfriend and I both got the matcha lattes and neither of us could finish them because they were so watered down and didn't taste very matcha-y. I'd definitely come back for the pastries, but not the drinks. read more

The Alchemist Baker is a community gem that serves coffee and delicious pastries! LOCATION: Easily accessible by commuter rail and car, the bakery is located in downtown Canton. There is a small lot in the back but plenty of street parking all around. The space itself big with a few tables. COFFEE: The coffee menu is short but includes all the favorites like latte, chai, etc. The coffee itself isn't too strong but pairs well with the pastries. PASTRIES: Probably the reason why you are here - their baked goods are absolutely amazing! You can't go wrong with anything here. They also have custom cakes as well so if you are looking for birthday cakes, this is the best to go. They don't have cakes in display to buy on that day so definitely plan ahead. SERVICE: Everyone is SO friendly! I didn't realize they didn't have same day cakes but they were able to accommodate a last minute request. They were thorough and answered all my questions. nice little bakery around the canton area if you want something local and take a break from starbucks. the layout looks good inside. coffee was just okay. came here a few times and baked goods were decent but not memorable. my wife did have a bad experience one time when they gave her sour milk in her coffee. i even took a sip myself and came to same conclusion. she had to walk all the way back and they did give her a new coffee. the workers seem surprised and seem like they didn't believe her which left a sour taste in our mouths no pun intended. we haven't returned since. i understand accidents do happen and it may have just been a one off experience but i figured i'd share anyways. read more

I love this place (if only I was younger and skinnier!). The owner and her staff are truly wonderful. Good coffee (that's just a start!) but obviously the baked goods are the stars! I must start with the scones. They are crispy on the outside, but not overly dry either. And the flavors: I recommend the peach butterscotch and the blackberry and white chocolate. Unbelievable. Not too sweet, but the contents still are unmistakable. The lemon poppyseed and the blueberry scones are also amazing, but much more "pedestrian." My kids swear by the nutella rugellach (very dense and melted chocolate gianduja) which is simply too over the top for me! The lemon bars are also excellent (and not too sweet), but the salted caramel chocolate chip cookies are my true guilty pleasure! Everything is same-day fresh, with top quality ingredients, so the prices are quite reasonable. They sell any day-old pastries (although I am shocked they weren't sold out!) at a discount. And yes, the day-old pastries are fresher than the fresh pastries served at other bakeries. Canton Center is definitely blessed to have The Alchemist (which I believe is named for Paul Coelho's masterpiece...and it's fitting! read more

My wife and I are visiting from California and after trying a few places we came here and I have to say this is the best coffee shop in town hands down. GET A SCONE! We've had their cookies at a farmer's market and they were tasty, so we stopped by on a Sunday morning for some quick bites. The cafe is spacious, but a little sparse when it comes to decor. Skip the coffee/tea, it's not that great. We've tried both the coffee and London fog latte and the flavors of both were really bland. The coffee cake was buttery and moist, and had the right balance of sweetness. My one gripe is that the employee who served it stuck her bare hands into the paper bag to inflate it, then put the pastry in with tongs and proceeded to ring us up... which does not inspire a ton of confidence in their food safety procedures. read more

We've been wanting to visit the Alchemist Baker for a long time and finally made it in! The bakery is beautiful and spacious inside. Definitely looks like a nice place to work from if you are a remote worker, which I hope to do in the future. All of the staff was very kind and helpful. They definitely care about their business and their customers. The selection of baked goods was very good, and everything looked excellent. We tried the pumpkin scone and coffee cake. Both were delicious. Maybe not the best baked goods we've ever eaten, but definitely good, and I definitely would like to try more items. My average rating is for their drinks. While all of their baked goods are fresh and from scratch, it appears that their coffee/tea drinks are not. For example, the chai latte is just the Tazo chai latte concentrate with milk added, which I could've done at home. Sadly, we both tossed our "lattes" but we were at least able to enjoy the baked treats. read more

This is my favorite bakery. Full stop. I drive 30+ minutes out of my way to get rugelah, scones, lattes, and generally enjoy the bright and cheerful atmosphere because of how delicious the pastries and drinks are and because of how lovely the people behind the counter are. Regarding the baked goods, I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but as an amateur eater, I've tried the cookies, cheesecake, scones, rugelah, lemon bar, raspberry bar, brownie, and blondie (yes, I know--I've eaten a lot of the offerings, but I really love this bakery lol), and they've all been amazing. My friend (who went to culinary school and specialized in pastry something-or-other) said the rugelah and scone dough texture is wonderful. Whatever that means? All I know is that it's light and fluffy and yummy. The rugelah in particular are so good that they have healing abilities. A friend of the family fell and broke her hip, so she can't move around. Although she loves pastries for breakfast, she hasn't had an appetite for weeks, but I brought the Nutella rugelah around--and she's back on the pastry train. She said it's the best rugelah she's ever had. Her appetite is back! Magical rugelah. They have flavor combinations in the pastries (peach butterscotch scone) and drinks (rose chamomile latte) that I never would have imagined together, but they're spectacular. Literally everything I've tried has been spectacular. You won't be disappointed with anything you order. Also! You can order specialty cakes for birthdays, celebrations, etc. You need to order two business days in advance, and the cakes are BEAUTIFUL and delicious. We had a baby shower for my daughter and her husband with about 40 people attending. The Alchemist Baker came up with a beautiful design with baby shoes to top of the cake. The cake itself was amazing. All guests remarked about its delicious taste and moistness, never mind the extraordinary artwork she did decorating it. We were in town visiting families over the Thanksgiving holiday and our family was raving about this new dessert place that just opened up. So we decided to pay a visit on Saturday. This place is a cute corner spot with few parking in the back. I was blown away by the taste of freshly made desserts and cookies. I'm not the biggest eater of sweet things, but when it's made fresh and doesn't taste overly sugary I like to enjoy them. I also had a latte which was very good as well.
