I have been going to Thas Auto Repair for the past 12 years. I have gotten to know Tha Tran personally and I can tell you that you will not find a more honest mechanic than him. He is very nice and humble and will tell you exactly how it is. This time I went there to get my 2011 E-350 fixed with the following 1) Oil Housing Seepage: Stevens Creek of MBZ quoted me $2000.94 and Tha did it using OEM parts for $539.73. 2) Engine Mounts: Stevens Creek of MBZ quoted me $2693.80 and Tha did it using OEM parts (and the Transmission Mount) for $919.15. For reference, for #1, Stevens Creek MBZ quoted me $1847.93 in March 2025 (so their price went up 8% in less than 11 months) and for #2 they quoted me $2609 in March 2025 (3% increase in less than 11 months). This excuse for "oh inflation is causing prices to increase" is BS because for the rest of us (like me), our take home pay doesn't go up by that much in 11 months! read more

Needed to swap my winter tires on last minute for a weekend snow trip, and most shops did not have any availability. Called up Tha's and immediately he said I could come in when they open at 9am. I had emphasized how I needed to get this done before a certain time and the owner was very confident in his team to get it done. Arrived right at opening and shortly after checking in with the owner, he had a few guys bring my car inside to start the swap. It was great to see how patient the owner was when helping out a few older customers who seemed unfamiliar with vehicles. It was a very reasonable price to get all four tires changed out on my Outback, as well as a quick job (within 1-2 hours). LEFT IN TEARS.... I, along with my elderly mother and father, have been loyal longtime customers of Tha's for over 10 years. His prices were more reasonable than others and we knew he wouldn't do anything unethical in fixing our cars. However, lately I have seen a substantial decline in the quality of the work and customer service. I scheduled a routine oil change days in advance and still ended up waiting for 2 hours (the wait at Jiffy Lube is 10 minutes). So expect long wait times. Furthermore, I saw one of his new guys not use a funnel when topping off the break fluid and lots of fluid dribbled out of the bottle into my engine. Keep in mind last week my dad had his oil changed by Tha and discovered the oil cap was left completely off, just sitting on the engine when he returned home. If my dad hadn't immediately checked, who knows what kind of damage could have been done. So after two hours of standing (no chairs), waiting for my car oil to be changed, I asked to check the oil level. I couldn't see the oil line very clearly, but Tha insisted it was fine. I thanked him and left. The next day I thought it would be a good idea to check the level. Every time I checked on different "leveled" surfaces the oil indicated low (see photo). I called Tha and he raised his voice at me in exasperation saying the level is fine! I told him I'm concerned, and asked if could I swing by for him to do a quick check. He reluctantly agreed. When I arrived, I held out my phone so Tha could see a photo of the low oil level to prove I wasn't making this up. He dismissively walked right past me while impatiently snapping, "Ya, ya, I don't want to see a photo. Let me look at the car." I trailed behind him and when he checked the level it surprisingly looked pretty normal in the middle. "That's strange," I said. What would cause that to happen?" Immediately Tha's countenance became angry and he threatened, "How do I know?!? You tell me!! I don't know where you took that photo or where you checked the level! WE are professionals! WE know how much oil to put in your car! The next time you come back and I check your oil, YOU will be charged!" He continued to "let me have it" even making some rude personal remarks about my prescription sunglasses. I was shocked that he was speaking to me in such a disdainful, unprofessional manner and I explained how I was simply a concerned customer trying to prevent possible engine damage. Shaking his head at me with extreme annoyance he admonished, "No! Oil can even be on low and be fine! You worry too much! Next time you go somewhere else for oil change or I charge you extra! You understand me ?!? Tha's alarming behavior had quickly changed from the dismissive treatment I experienced the last couple of years to full-blown hostility. I explained how my entire family supported his business for over 10 years as very loyal customers. But Tha cut me off saying, "Ya ya- I appreciate your business..." and then completely walked away from me when I was talking in mid sentence. After getting balled out, I left shaken up and in tears (on Valentine's Day of all days!), feeling disrespected and like all my years of loyalty were slapped in the face the minute I questioned him. Is it such a crime to come back 2-3 times in those 10+ years and ask for 5 minutes of his time to recheck the workmanship? No customer should be yelled at and treated with such rudeness, along with putting up with long wait times, and lower quality work. I will take my business elsewhere where they value their customers and treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve. read more

They recommended a lot of expensive work, including replacing some parts just because of the age of my car; not necessarily because they looked worn out. I decided to go back to Tha for a second opinion because he seemed like an honest guy. He confirmed that some of the services recommended were not needed yet and he charged me a third of what I was going to pay for repairs at the dealership. Tha is the "car whisperer" because he can pinpoint a problem faster and more accurately than anyone out there! He is also the best & fairest mechanic ever! He has taken care of my BMW Z4 for years and when I had an accident, he convinced the adjuster that he could fix my 2003 car. Beware while going for smog test. While other charge reasonably less. This guy charged $42 for first attempt which was failed due to new battery. He didn't give any checklist or bother to ask any questions before doing smog test. At the end he said that he will retest. But when I appear again to retest he denied and again charge $28. That total $70 for smog test for 2014 year car. My advise is discuss everything upfront and get in written. Also, he may not do your job on time while he will not refuse to take your case and promise to deliver quick (false). read more

Tha has been my mechanic since 2010 and I think he is the most reasonable and honest mechanic out there. One thing that I have noticed about Tha is his work ethic. He will tell me what things are urgent versus what can wait and gives me an estimate about when I would need to repair the tasks that can wait. I have found that he is very thorough with repairs and he will spend time looking for parts for my car and then call me once he gets them in. I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to cars, but I trust his judgement and he has always been the person I know I can go to since I moved here. I have gone to tra for our cars since he worked at the gas station on miller and stevens creek. Now he has his own shop and I would not get my car repaired by anyone else... I have gone to him for years for my kids cars and ours. His prices are great and he explains everything. He is fair and does such good work, when he has fixed our cars there was never any problem. I had Tha do a complete 100K mile service on our new for us (used) Benz C320, including changing the leaking valve cover gasket. A week later I was noticing a slight oil burning smell so I took it back to him for inspection. Tha examined the value cover on the spot and confirmed there was indeed a small leak. He asked me to return by the end of the day, and he had replaced the gasket. Said it was installed correctly, and was not sure why it leaked - possibly a manufacturing defect in the gasket. When I asked him for the repair bill and he said no charge, as he stands behind his work. I did not want him to take a loss on this job, so I insisted on paying him at least for the part. He said it was only $15 so I stuffed a $20 bill in his shirt pocket. The car now runs as good as new ! read more

I picked Tha's garage for my oil change and tune up because of the location to work and all the great Yelp reviews. I dropped my key off with the gas station attendant before the garage opened, stopped by at lunch time when my car was ready and to pay, and I'll take the car home later when my shift ends. There was no stress, as it is a 3 min walk from my office, and because of all the positive reviews of folks who have been using Tha for years, I trusted them. I called Tha's Auto Repair to have smog test performed. He told me to come right away and he could immediately test my Honda . I arrived ten minutes later and paid the fee. He needed to retest and told me he could do it immediately. I WAITED 2-1/2 HOURS; HE THEN TOLD ME IT WOULD BE ANOTHER 2 HOUR WAIT. I asked for a refund because I could not wait ANOTHER 2 HOURS; he would not refund. We exchanged some harsh language; I left and had it done elsewhere. Tha's does not make appointments for smog tests...evidently, he lines up customers and has them wait. If he had told me there would have been a four hour wait, I would not have gone to his shop. VERY POOR BUSINESS PRACTICE TO LIE ABOUT "NO WAITING." My bank refunded the payment via a charge against his bank account. read more
