I have yet to try their nicer sit-down restaurant in West End, but after seeing how good the food court one is, I'm eager to.

My kids (who are exceptionally fussy eaters) absolutely love the Hor Tong (Golden Parcels), these are little deep fried pastry parcels filled with minced pork, crab meat, prawns, water chestnuts and bamboo shoots - they get gobbled up very quickly in my house. A meal for a family of four will cost around $40, this includes an entree and two mains (mains are around $16 each). The restaurant is decorated with traditional thai statues, natural timbers and earthy tones. It is great to dine in but I rarely have the time. Great food and good staff.

We decided to head down and eat inside. The interior has a nice thai feel about it. The decor is pretty standard thai restaurant decor. We chose one of the set menus where you get entrees, main and dessert. Sadly, the experience was not very good. The food while somewhat tasty, was extremely oily and prohibitively expensive. The price tag definitely doesn't match the quality of the food that we were served. Mains start around $20, we did the set menu and it was $27 per person which is seemingly good value. You get a lot of food, but it was extremely oily and overcooked. The seafood stirfry we got, the scallops were overcooked and the prawns were as well. Disappointing. There was only one other group in the restaurant, but it took forever to get our food. The guy even gave a couple of our meals to the other table. He did apologise, but he kept making mistakes and was more concerned with takeaway orders than us. They also forgot our dessert as well until we reminded them. All in all it took about 2 hours, we had a crying baby with us as well. The service was horrendous. With much better options in the area like the neighbouring Indian restaurant and Portabella, they really need to up their game for dine-in orders.

It's up on the corner where Hardgrave Road turns into Dornoch Terrace. When you walk past of a night time, there are always people happily swirling wine glasses and passing dishes around to share out on the side walk. The food is creamy (as is most Thai cuisine in Brisbane I find), generous with the meat, and is intensely aromatic. It's a divine experience just to walk past there on a busy night. It doesn't matter which Thai restaurant I find myself at, I always order Larb Gai. I'm happy to report Thai Patcharin's version is outstanding. It's large, perfectly spiced (they use real Thai herbs rather than western imitations) and incredibly flavoursome. When it comes to Thai food, I prefer the simple options. I love massaman curry- meat, potatoes, onion, and spices. It's my dish of choice. If you're looking for Thai food in West End, don't go anywhere else than here. It's a very gourmet, Westernised version of Thai food, but it's delicious, and if anything the flavours are more profound here than what you'll find elsewhere. Yum.

It was sweet and delicious and I always grab a roll when they have it available. Another unusual favourite is their tuna and avocado with black rice. The rice is sticky and flavourful and the tuna salad has a good amount of onion and mayonnaise to stop it from being bland. This place is good for what it is - takeaway sushi. Warm and crunchy pastry with a rich flavoured centre. Only one small thing from getting a 5 star rating, is that a few of the items on the menu are no longer available. A very minor thing though because all of the food is excellent. Also it is BYO wine so bring your favourite drop along with you.

If you're not terribly hungry, trust me, a small bowl of pho is more than enough. Everywhere else this "small" size would be a veritable medium while the medium would exceed a large. I've tried both the spicy beef noodle soup (bun bo hue) as well as the broken rice (com tam) with grilled and shredded pork. The bun bo hue was packed full of different cuts of beef steeped in a mild soup. The noodles weren't pho noodles but rather a more rounded gelatinous noodle that reminded me of a white spaghetti. Overall, it was filling and the soup was all right. However, there wasn't anything particularly stunning about the meat nor the other vegetables that were treated almost as a garnish. The broken rice consisted of the pork surrounded by an egg-meat loaf, fried egg and several slices of cucumber and tomato. On the side, there was also a fish sauce and chili mixture that is drizzled on top. Again the food was ample albeit a bit heavy on the rice but nothing really stood out. The pork was a little dry and the meat loaf just didn't seem to be seasoned. What makes this place average, however, instead of 4-star good is the service. The entrance is small so lining up means queuing up outside. The waiters tend to bark at you to 'come in' or just stare unhelpfully until you find a seat yourself. Getting your order taken is also quite a challenge. Overall, the staff just don't really seem to mind how you get your food as long as it eventually arrives. Bottom line? If you're willing to bear the abuses, Pho Hien Vuong is a good deal for the price.
