a plate of food with rice and vegetables

Lunch with Coworkers at Nong Kai was reasonable and delicious. Their Lunch special is cheap, with a whole page of selection from Curry to noddles for $12 (with your choices of beef, chicken, veggi or tofu). If you like seafood then it will be $14. I got the green curry with chicken and added coconut rice ($1). The curry has a lot of veggi and chicken and very flavourful. The coconut was okay, does not have much flavour to it, but it has a creamier taste than normal rice. For lunch the portion was just enough for you to want more ;) When we were there we saw a poster for PAD THAI CHALLENGE! 7lbs worth of pad thai and if you finish it, it is free or else you owe them $80! If you love pad thai you should try it and let me know!!

Despite having a seafood allergy I have never reacted to eating here, and that makes eating Asian cuisine a challenge. It indicates to me they run a clean kitchen. The servings for price point are great and the attention to detail is amazing even on take out (check out my husband's spot in the picture)! The decor is cute and the service is always attentive. My favourite thing to order is the Thai yellow curry- it can't be beat!! Highly, highly recommend this restaurant. Haven't had a single bad dish yet.

Picture hand-carved woodworking and room dividers, with a traditional looking roof built over the bar to go very the illusion that you are on a beach in Thailand. We each started with a Spicy Coconut Soup which I highly recommend and we shared a Thai Iced Tea. The tasty Thai Iced Tea is made with sweetened condensed milk, and I'm not sure what makes it orange but it's quite a cheerful, vibrant colour. I just love red Thai curry, and I also love peanut sauce so I knew I couldn't lose with the Swimming Rama. It's a Red Thai Curry with Peanut Sauce and Spinach, coconut rice in the side is a must. YUMMY! Our server was very friendly and helpful, we really enjoyed ourselves and will certainly be back again soon.

This is a great, but...something's not right for me rating, if I crave for some Thai, this may be one of the options. All of the ordered food items were great except for the price to food portion ratio to be imbalanced. My last visit resulted in over $20 worth of one dish of Pad Thai, and a Thai Ice Tea of course. It was such a great restaurant, but the price doesn't justify it any longer. I also find the establishment to be too dark, great theme of the establishment, but way too dark for me.

Red Chicken Curry

Every time I try out a new place, I always make sure to order the signature dish of the culture they are representing. So when we went to try out Thai Nong Khai, we ordered Red Chicken Curry and Pad Thai. I find the servings to be small for the price. One of the things I like about a curry dish is how the flavor just hits and awakens every single taste bud. This particular curry however did not deliver. We were surprised when the pad thai came cos the noodles looked different from all the pad thai we've tried before. It has good flavor as a noodle dish but it doesn't taste like pad thai. Service is pretty good and our server is very friendly but I don't think that is enough for me to come back given that there are other Thai places with better food.

Auttarote Thai Cuisine - Panang curry with chicken

Auttarote Thai Cuisine

I visited Auttarote Thai Cuisine while on a business trip. I was told that this Thai restaurant has…read moresome truly authentic Thai food so I was excited to try it out. When I walked in, I was both skeptical and kind of in awe at the same time. It felt like I walked into a movie set or a Christmas themed museum or something. There are so many decorations up but it also kind of just works. The first thing I'll bring up is the spice level. The spice levels are pretty similar to the true Thai spice levels. A hot level was giving me a good sweat while medium was just enough to burn the tongue a bit. The food itself was adequately described as authentic and delicious. The papaya salad in particular was very similar to the ones I've tried in Thailand. Great portion size and ratio between papaya and the other vegetables. It was absolutely delicious. The other reason why this restaurant is awesome is the customer service. From when I walked in to when I left, the server and who seemed like the manager or owner made sure everyone there was taken care of and didn't have to wait long for anything. I will definitely come back here when I visit Calgary again!

Honestly, the outside (and even the…read morestreet) looked a little sketchy, but stepping inside was such a surprise--it felt almost like a speakeasy. The colorful décor gave the whole place a lively vibe. We didn't have a reservation, but since it was a Monday night, we were seated right away. As vegetarians who don't eat eggs or fish sauce, we were a little unsure about what we could order. When we asked, our waiter kindly brought out an entirely separate vegetarian menu, which was amazing. The spring rolls were absolutely delicious, but the massaman curry was a bit disappointing--it was watery and lacked flavor, though the portion size was generous. Overall, it was still a great experience, and I'd consider coming back to try other dishes.

And our expectations were met, and exceeded! Although it's located in a funny little strip plaza, once you enter this lovely restaurant you immediately know it's different and managed by professionals. We were very politely taken to our reserved table, which they had situated in a private nook. Very nice. For a first course (and appetizer), Linda had a Tom Kha Gai soup, small, which is chicken and mushrooms in coconut milk with herbs and Thai ginger. She didn't want to share with me, but told me how absolutely delicious it was. Full of flavours, nuanced and layered. In a soup! I had the Tom Yum Goong, small, which a Thai creamy style hot and sour soup with prawns and mushrooms. The mild, delicious Enoki mushrooms, sometimes called golden needle mushrooms, were an exciting addition to this wonderful soup. Hands down, this was the best Tom Yum Goong I've tasted since my friend Mai's restaurant in Oakville back in 1997. Dinner for Linda was a Green Curry. Of course! She'll order a green curry anywhere we go, anytime! Served with zucchini, broccoli and green beans, she said it was one of the best she's ever had. Strong layered flavours. For those who love curry (like Linda), she said this is the best anywhere. I had the Chu Chi Basa, which is a basa fillet (lots, actually) drizzled with a rich red curry sauce, and served on a bed of exceptional raw young spinach. This was absolutely delicious. All the distinct flavours were present and identifiable. The fish was delicious, crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside. I can't say enough good about this dinner and this restaurant. It's a bit out of the way, but easy to find. It deserves to be known by all Calgarians who love authentic Thai food. Presentation: 5/5. As someone currently experiencing mobility difficulties, it was a slightly challenging climb up the stairs. Once I made it to the top, I was met with a charming decor. I was the sole customer during my visit. I arrived around 8pm and was seated near the window. A perfect spot to people watch when it's not raining. My server was efficient and kind. I was told it was last call as I was placing my order (they close at 9pm). From then on, the dinner service felt rushed. Within 10 minutes, I had my appetizer, entree, and drink. Just as I'd started on my entree, I was asked if I wanted my dessert to be brought out. Let's get into the best part of my evening- the food! The Spring roll was perfectly crispy with yummy goodness within. The Pad Thai with chicken and shrimp was delicious. The Mango and Sticky Rice was different than I am accustomed with, but it was edible. Lastly, I found the Mai Tai drink to be sweetly refreshing. I wanted another drink, but I'd missed the last call. From the time I was seated to paying the bill, it was a total of 45 minutes. The prices are affordable. This is a gem in downtown Calgary.
