Restaurant Le Surcouf - Foie Gras

Authentic French restaurant with exquisite food, great service and comforting ambiance nestled…read moreinside an old home property with cozy atmosphere. The entrance to the home prepares you for the grand night. You walk through a lovely garden up to the front door. This was a full french dinner that lasted 4 hours. The restaurant brought small courses in between our ordered courses and the were separated by time giving you space to visit with your party and to digest. The small in-between courses included a small scoop of pallet cleansing sorbet, bread, and after desert they brought a second light desert of a choux pastry (cream puff without the cream filling). Food was absolutely exquisite. I started with seared Foie Gras which was prepared perfectly, super tender and rich. I understand the ethical concerns with Foie Gras, but it is hard to find in the US and I wanted to take opportunity to enjoy a little while abroad. I highly recommend this restaurant!

A friend recommended this restaurant during my visit in Montreal. It looked like an ordinary house…read morefrom the outside. I was seated at a table next to the window where I could have a glimpse of the lake, a nice view. I ordered the special menu for the day as shown in the photo. There were bread and bite size of appetizer on the house. Then the appetizer for the day was rabbit to eat with crackers with sweet tasted onion and a tiny pickle on the side. This was an adventure for me since I had never eaten any rabbit before. Personally, The rabbit tasted like chicken to me. It was smooth and light to eat with crackers like this. Then came the main course, beef shoulder roast with Béarnaise sauce. The beef shoulder was tender and the sauce lightened up the taste of the meat. I also love the mashed sweet yams on the side and the potato was cut in very thin slices. I was so satisfied with the elegant presentation and the delicious taste of the main course. The dessert was a big piece of chocolate in pyramid shape. It went well with the berries and milk on the side. Yet it was a bit too sweet and too much for me to my personal taste after the main course. This was a very nice French cuisine.

My friend ordered the same but with fries, it came out to 27$ with taxes. It is a bit pricey but you get what you paid for. I would recommend the 4oz which is enough.

Upon entering its a really nice looking place, lots of seating, yet for a lunch time it appeared to be rather sparsely populated. I am quite use to Thai Express' level of service, which is "express" level, at most locations you're chowing down before McDonalds has even finished microwaving your burger. I am also use to the Caribbean temporal anomaly called "Island Time" where everything happens in slow motion due to the lack of motivation of the island's inhabitants. Little did I know that Island time also referred to the West Island of Montreal, but it appears to have found its home in this particular stretch of DDO. The first bad omen -- no one is working at the cash. I stood there a good 3 minutes before someone finally meandered over, after placing my order I stood and waited, there was no one cooking anything, and now a few others placed orders after me, still no one manning the wok. Finally after about 10 minutes and being quite hungry and frustrated I asked why there was no one cooking and swear to God, this is what I was told. "The cooks are off having lunch" to which I replied "That's ironic, I'm here for the same reason!" It took me another 5 minutes to get my money back as no one knew how to use the cash register, I then went somewhere else. Funnily enough when I told this to a friend he told me this place is known as a disorganized disaster, and the google review of it pointed out the same.
