The operation is top notch from the office/operations management, aircraft maintenance, flight logistics and coordination, and instruction. I transferred from another flight school and instantly saw the Mach 5 difference and high standard. I was fortunate to get paired with David Wells who did a perfect job of helping me reach my full potential. I just had fun flying at Mach 5, David, and will continue to fly with Mach5 in the future. KAUN (Auburn Airport) location provides good vibes, valuable flight experience as it is located in the base of the foothills with access to the Sacramento valley, and up front views/access to various aircraft. There is a cafe and two breweries near by. The mechanics are amazing and provide great exposure to maintenance and repair being an open shop right next to the office. This helped with my understanding of the aircraft and its systems. The planes are very well maintained and it is very clear where each plane sits with regards to maintenance and repair. It is clear Mach 5 has the highest standards for instruction. There are numerous layers and checks within the process. I was required to complete thorough flight reviews and marks after each flight which are recorded in my file and reviewed by chief instructors. At various points in the training I had to fly with a chief instructor for sign off to the next stage. This greatly increased my confidence moving forward by having multiple people give you a green light prior to the next step. The way Mach 5 operates, David Wells taught, and all that flying out of Auburn provided made me a very confident and safe pilot as I move forward in my training. Thank you to the team at Mach 5! After making my decision to divert and land and after advising NorCal of my plans, I changed my radio frequency over to Placerville and checked their AWOS for current weather and winds. With the winds favoring runway 5, I made my 10 mile announcement and eventually began my right downwind leg for landing. Like most high altitude airports with shorter runways surrounded by mountains, the approaches always seem to be high, fast and unforgiving. After landing and heading to the FBO, I was told the tie down fees for parking were $6 bucks a day. A total of $18 dollars for the three days I left my girl parked. Now, here's something to show you how nice and caring the folks are who work and operate Placerville's FBO. When I got in my plane on October 4th, I found a post-it note on my seat. The note said "during the weekend, the winds got bad and your door blew open and began banging with the the winds. I did my best to secure it and make sure it stayed shut." How's that for customer service.

I would have given all five stars were it not for less than responsive communication during the process and for the questionable amount of additional paint Dave required when it was all said and done. However, they went well beyond the estimate in prep work, didn't charge more than the agreed price and I could not be happier with the result. My plane has short enough landing gear legs to require a custom short-bladed propeller. I thought…read moreit would look good with 3 blades, so I bought such a propeller, of the right diameter and a pitch we thought might be right, from Craig, and then flew around with it enough to figure out exactly how a perfect propeller would be. Craig then fabricated such a propeller for me, and now, after he also dynamically balanced the new propeller on the aircraft, this propeller far exceeds my hopes and expectations. I get faster true airspeeds at any power settings compared to the 2-bladed propeller it replaced. It just pulls and pulls, and smoothly, too. Buying a propeller from Craig was like buying a commitment to be satisfied. I was so amazed. Everything we did was free to me after I bought the first beautiful 3-bladed prop. When the numbers from my test flights indicated that a different pitch would give me a propeller that would be more suitable for my aircraft, he just fabricated exactly that propeller, which turned out to be perfect indeed. Then I came back and we balanced it. Now, I'm astonished at how happy the combination of airframe, engine, and propeller makes this particular pilot. 5 big stars from Jack.
