What a blast! My first time at the Texas Roller Derby, and it was a lot of fun watching the amazingly talented and athletic skaters battle it out on the rink. And I do mean battle! The most interesting part of roller derby is the all-out use of both offense and defense to keep the opponent's jammer from passing you - as well as getting your own to the front of the pack. This of course led to some serious body-checking, railing, whipping, and unnecessary roughness. (Actually come to think of it, most of the roughness was very necessary and thoroughly entertaining.) I knew going in that the team names were pun-o-riffic. We saw the 'All-Scar Army' and the Texas United Roller Derby team. That second team name doesn't look funny until you put together the initials. Thus you got the announcer gleefully saying things during the game like, "The All-Scars are really straining to hold back those T.U.R.Ds!" Better yet, the players had awesome names. We sat next to 'Rink Panther's' daughter, and I spotted lots of fans cheering on 'Milla Juke-a-Bitch', 'Smitey Mouse', 'Bible Thumper', and my personal favorite, 'Strawberry Deathcake'. And best of all, I didn't realize that even the referees had cool names. It took me a full a second to put together the ref's name on the back of one of their shirts: Jenny Tell Ya. To me, the atmosphere has a sort of family-friendly punk-skater vibe. Total grrrl power and totally awesome. Good heavy metal/thrash band playing during pre-game and half-time, but yikes it's loud. (Yeah, I know that means I am getting old.) The venue's got good seating, and plentiful if somewhat expensive nearby parking at $8/car. Drinks and pizza are also overpriced, but that's hardly new if you've ever been to an arena event. If cost is an issue, park on the street before the show, walk in, and use the half-time to jog over to one of the little Mexican places across the way on Barton Springs Road. And don't forget to smile. You're in Austin, enjoying one of the most Austin-y things to do on a Sunday evening! read more

Hell on wheels. That is what comes to mind as I watch some of the toughest women in Austin strap on roller skates and fly around a banked track in a controlled chaos. This ain't no Disney on Ice. Here you might might draw blood, will likely get an elbow to the ribs and can count on finding yourself face to face with the track surface. Although sometimes hosted at the Austin Convention Center, the home of the TXRD is the Palmer Event Center with space to seat a few thousand. Like just about anywhere in Austin, you will find a broad mix of fans. Live music performances fill the air prior to the bout and at halftime. There are multiple full bars to wet your whistle. The TXRD is a skater owned organization and it is obviously in the best interests of the skaters to put on a crowd pleasing show and gain faithful fans. However, there is not a sense of a choreographed routine, even among friends there is some serious competition going on here with more than just pride on the line. read more

I have been going to Rollergirls for the past 6 years. There are actually two types of leagues in the area; flat track and banked track. This is banked and I really enjoy it much more! This group is skater owned and skater run which makes this even better! These girls know how to play rough. I can not give them enough credit for what they do and to think, they all have days jobs too! After bringing countless friends to the TXRD bouts over the past 6 years, one things I have noticed time and time again... the ladies love it and the guys are just "ok" with it. Fun time, must do, one time! Take great company with you because it get's really boring after the first round. At least you'll have someone to talk to. Although can get loud so great for holding hands and not talking to a good looking new guy you are dating. It's not as fast as that movie whip it leads you to believe. The concession stand is full of greasy food and expensive $4 bottled water. This event is really too expensive $15 + $7 parking + food/drinks makes it really pricey for more than one person. You don't tug on Super Man's cape, You don't spit into the wind, You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger And you don't mess around with the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls..... (I wouldn't anyway, Jim) Had a blast on a Sunday night in the Palmer Events Center. If you've never been - GO! A combination of professional wrestling, rock concert, roller races, high energy counter culture types cutting loose with multiple tattoos, piercings, amped up and all heavily laced up in a giant double-knotted flannel lesbian-themed bow teh likes not seen in these parts since the last Indigo Girls concert (not that there's anything wrong with that). A solid 9 on the people watching scale. $13.00 admission and well worth it. Drinks (I read below are expensive) but no more than you would pay at a concert or ball game. (Props to the bartenderess who remembered what I was drinking even after I forgot). Full bar or beer. No data points on food but when the people at the ticket table whisper "don't complain to us about the food" it's a pretty good indicator to sample the fare elsewhere. I have to admit - the girls brought it. The scuffled, fought, raced, body-checked, jammed, wrastled, and skated their little hearts out in a whizzing counter-clockwise vagatarian furr-ball, and it was awesome. Kudos to the clever 'names' these girls came up with, (although 'Once a Month' on the Cherry bombs could leave a little more to the imagination. Eww) Nothing but smiles at the end, all the girls mixed with the crowd, fans, lots of families out to support their daughters, wives , moms, friends, etc., before, at halftime, and after. They were having fun. They were and are cool. The only flaw was a poor sound system - They tried to keep things lively but I couldn't really understand the red-coated announcers or the purposefully-skanky Mistress of Ceremonies. Even the half time band, which was very animated, was too loud and too distorted. Too bad. Rock On TXRD girls. Can't wait to go back on a Saturday night. THIS WAS SOOO MUCH FUN!!! So months ago, my friend tells me that her friend is on the roller derby team in Austin. I had seen whip it a few weeks earlier and I wanted to hear all about it!! Unfortunately, her next match was on a Sunday and I had to be up early on Monday and blah, blah, blah life and responsibility kept me from driving up to Austin. Then this match was on a Saturday and woo-hoo road trip! (except not really, cause Austin isn't really far enough to be considered a road trip) When we arrived it was $15 to get in and there wasn't a big line or crowd, we found great seats right away and settled in for a great nights entertainment. And we were not disappointed! When you're a newbie (like me) you can get caught up with the people watching, but pay attention because at the beginning of the match they explain all the rules so that you can follow the rest of the night. The minor penalties are hysterical and we got to see 2 pillow fights, an arm wrestling match, a long jump, a relay, and an race where the girls had to beat each other up. There were also 2 real fights. The announcers are so funny and so are the girls. Really you can see that they are all just having such a great time. I know that San Antonio has a flat track derby, but the one in austin is banked. I don't know what kind of changes this creates, but I had the best time. I love me some roller girls! I went to my first bout this past Sunday and it was great. It was easy to understand and by the end of the first quarter I was yelling, cursing and wanting to see some more fights. This is a true sport and it's awesome to see girls playing their heart out. I loved the penalty wheel, because let's face it who doesn't love a good pillow fight. My favorite penalty called- biting! It's pretty raunchy and violent but we saw quite a bit of families there and the opening band was a bunch of tweens playing classic rock and roll. It's a good idea to get there early because it's standing room admission after the bleachers fill up. Another good idea, stay for the whole game. About half the event center cleared out before the 2nd half but by the end the girls are really tired and the fights get more aggressive. I saw one jammer put another jammer in a chock hold, so it's worth sticking around. Austin, we are lucky to have this sport and we should go out and support these girls! read more

Although I'm a little biased considering my sister is a Rollergirl in this league, going to the games never ceases to be an amazing and very entertaining experience. I usually attend around 2-3 games a year, and this last Saturday night was the first Championship game I had ever been to. The crowd was way into it, the place was PACKED (in a good way) and the game was close. Unfortunately, a couple of the skaters got hurt, which was a little unexpected and unwanted twist, but overall the game was exciting and I couldn't help but leave with a smile on my face, even when the team I was rooting for lost. The league is skater owned/run and each and every girl that is in that league has such an awesome passion towards the game and they all share an awesome bond and have the kind of camaraderie that brings a tear to your eye and makes you wish you were one of them. On top of all of that, the games are at the Convention Center downtown and the stadium seating offers you a good view no matter where you sit (as opposed to a *cough* skating rink *cough*). I think next season, 2-3 games a year just won't be enough and I'll be spending more time at bouts! A perfect way to start a Saturday night. read more

Roller Derby is totally awesome. You get to watch really talented chicks demonstrate their athletic skill and kick some ass in the process. It's definitely one of the more entertaining events to attend in Austin. Cons: Drinks at the convention center are kind of pricey ($5 a pop), but Champions, the Sport's bar across the street actually has really good drink specials on Sundays (when bouts are). $2.50 wells and domestics. I just went to the championship bout last night......hellcats vs. cherry bombs and it was a BLAST! It was so entertaining to watch, the action, the hits, the penalty wheel, etc.... These girls are so talented and have a passion for what they do and it's inspiring to watch. I got the chance to meet a lot of them last night through a friend and they are just the coolest, most down to earth people you will meet. Everyone of the girls on both teams knew each other. You can tell there is a lot of love and respect out there. It was very sad to see two pretty serious injuries, but it just goes to chow how tough this sport really is.. Searching for something to do on Do512 and ran across the TXRD Roller Derby. I tried out for (and made) the team about 10 years ago but never followed through because I'm lazy. And these women work hard -- everything from practicing, to strategy, assembling (and disassembling) the track, buying all their gear; all while balancing their full-time jobs and families is a true labor of love. So I wanted to show my latent support by finally going to see it live. For $5 to park at the Travis County Expo Center, $20 per ticket, and $24 for drinks; we got 2.5 hours of entertainment (I spend WAY more than that at iPic). Cherry Bombs vs Las Putas Del Fuego. I learned quickly that puta means "bitch". Which will make you both giggle and feel oddly disconcerted to hear a crowd chanting it with small children nearby. If you've never been to roller derby, I highly recommend taking a gander at the rules of the game, otherwise it's super confusing. We took a quick look and we're still lost at times. Though, the rules did not prepare us for the man in a homemade hornet's costume holding equally homemade signs that read "Pillow Fight" and "Tug of War" while he occasionally flips people off and tosses prizes into the crowd. There's also a lady in a sparkly top hat who acts as an MC/Circus Ringleader. She leads games and what appear to be punishments for minor infractions. The punishments are things like Tug of War and appear to be (SPOILER ALERT) scripted. She also lead a game for people whose birthday me are that month. I'm not shy so I raised my hand and joined my fellow Birthday Babies on the track. We each had our bums spanked by every member of each team. Every member. And their wrist guards (ouchy!). The crowd is a rag-tag mix of the players families, empowers teenaged girls, swooning lesbians, and people dressed in costumes. It's a people-watchers paradise! For a kooky, casual, anything goes night out; it does the trick. read more

As the father of a skater, and the friend of a few I want to tell you something: these girls are a lot more than short shorts, torn fishnet, and the funniest game names you've ever seen. I mean, Sacralicious, Glitterotica,Prissy Galore and Abbey Roadkill? You just gotta go... Parking is plentiful but expensive at the Palmer, so think about taking one of many buses that serve the area. Not a bad seat at the house, ticket prices reasonable, plenty of liquid libations available as well as pizza, pretzels and popcorn (apparently they only sell snacks beginning with P) and a fan friendly environment. Always a live band at the break, and plenty of people on hand to explain the intricacies of banked track roller derby. Kids of all ages welcome because even though the booze is flowing, no one gets out of hand as the TXRD security and law enforcement have just enough visibility to keep it all cool and happy. And the biggest treat? Many of the fans (including a number of "retired" skaters) come dressed to the nines... This is crowd watching at its best. So, the next time you're looking for something different to do, something Austin-cool and not easily replicated, catch a bout of the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls. I went to one of these bouts around my birthday -- and I was able to go up on the track and get birthday spankings from all the Rollergirls! Hilarious! Also it was amazing to see them up on a banked track -- very old school but with new school attitudes. My favorite was the penalty wheel!! hahah -- pillow fighting and tug of war! A little change in plans of the typical Flight of the Conchords, Sunday, we enjoyed the Texas Roller Girls in action - straight up, old school Roller Derby! I have to admit - I've seen the roller derby one time before at Playland Skate Center - and what a completely different experience! They are moving on up... As soon as we walked in, I had a definite Dorothy moment. And the beauty - I could sit up in the stands and quietly observe the all new world of Oz we stumbled into. WITH a beer (thankfully NOT Lone Star) in hand. (At $5.25 a glass, a bit spendy - but the experience just isn't complete without it). Not only did we get to enjoy the antics in the ring, there was people watching galore! What a great way to spend an evening. Truth be told, after intense concentration - I still only knew what was going on half the time. But seriously these girls are crazy cool. I am a little afraid of them, a little envious of them (I mean these girls have chutzpah!) - it's a world completely unknown to me. I found myself asking over and over, "Is this for real?" I always thought of hockey for fights - no way, man. Serious girl fights, swinging blows - pure craziness! Awesome! read more

wow! What fun! We saw the Putas del Fuego take on the Rhinstone Cowgirls in a tight battle full of great entertainment. Totally a moneys-worth endeavor. $15 (at the door) for ~3 hours of show. The first half was a little more tame. At half time, several of the famililies left. The second half got a little rowdy. After party and an up-all-night event lets you hang out with the roller girls after the bout. MUCH fun. read more

This is the league that helped re-start it all (along with the flat-track Texas Rollergirls)!! You migh have seen the show on A&E a few years back, but being there in person with a cold Lone Star in hand is WAY more fun! My wife and I both enjoy going... we dig the speed and skill of the skaters along with the hard hits. Don't worry, you'll pick up on the rules of the game quickly if you go. No matter what, just wait for a penalty (which happens often) and check out the rock'em-sock'em punnishments they dole out. Do yourself a favor and go to a bout. Any time we take friends, by the end of it they're like, "that was the best 15-bucks I've spent in a long time!" Want to pick a team to cheer for? May I suggest the oft underrated, but totally kick ass Hellcats. You'll have a ton of fun as the night wears on yelling "Hell yeah Hellcats!" as you grab another brew. read more

I saw the Cherry Bombs v. the Putas del Fuego this last Sunday at the convention center. This was my first roller derby and I am completely sold. I want season tickets! Great atmosphere, Dos Equis on tap, girls in short skirts, you can't beat it. Slightly confusing, to me at least, so I thought I'd at least try to clear this up: Austin actually has two rollergirl leagues. This one, the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls, was started in 2001. They compete at the Austin Convention Center on a banked track - these girls aren't messing around. The Texas Rollergirls, founded in 2003, are part of the WFTDA and skate on a flat track. You can find them at the Playland Skate Center off of Burnet and 183. (Can't say anything for the Texas Rollergirls, I'll have to put that on my to-do list). read more

My only complaint would be the rather sterile venue and that it was difficult to get a good view. I have to say, this has to be the must-see event for anyone visiting Austin. If you live here, and you haven't seen a game before: you really don't know what you are missing. Imagine if professional wrestling was real, it was all women, and it was on skates. And imagine if the participants did it not for fame or money, but because they are crazy. This isn't too far off from what you'll get with TXRD. Tip: When they have this at the downtown convention center, you can save alot of $$$ on beer by going to Champion's across the street before the game, and during half-time. I finally found a sport my husband is interested in watching, and it might just have to do with the enormous amount of hilarity/ tiny amount of clothing that can be seen at the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls. As I am a lover of puns, I opted not to get the facebook so that I could just giggle at all the player introductions. I think I got my money out of that alone. Other highlights include but are not limited to: Austin people watching (everyone from mid-life-crisis failed tech startup CEOs trying to rekindle their youth to young women who didn't look at the mirror before heading out - cowboy boots, striped socks, an undershirt and gym shorts - wowee). I would highly recommend both parking on the other side of the street and getting Sandy's before the tournament. It was ridiculously fun and made me wish that I had some sense of balance so that I could kick ass out there as well. read more

Such a fun experience! Haven't been this season yet, but I did frequent many matches last year. Went the first time out of curiosity, and then went because it is pure fun! Great way to spend a Saturday evening. The players have so much character and you really get drawn into their enthusiasm. The mini games they play for fouls are so much fun! It's hard to understand the woman who dishes out the mini games (mainly because of her microphone), but not much explanation is needed. They do a great job of explaining the rules of the game at the beginning of the match for newbies, so no one gets too lost. The food and drinks are a little pricey, but you can leave the venue to grab a bite. However, maintaining a good seat is hard if you don't guard it. So splitting rounds with friends is a good trade off. The seating is my only complaint. We always try to get there early, but you need to get there really early in order to get the best seats. Standing room is in a good location, but that is a long time to stand. Overall, it is really fun! Great thing to take out-of-towners to who want to have a real Austin experience. read more

So fun! We checked out some roller girl action a couple weeks ago and I have to say I'm glad we popped our Cherry-Bomb with flat track derby. Because as Eugene Struthers would say, banked track derby takes it to a WHOLE NOTHA LEVEL! The bouts are held at the Palmer Event Center so already you know it's for serious. Inside they have the track all set up and your typical concessions, merchandise, and a live band. But they kicked it up a notch with two announcers in matching red suit-n-ties, bad ass skating, a Penalty Mistress, and cheerleaders. I'll address them in order: The announcers were posted up high overseeing the game in a booth - they followed the game but also made funny comments here and there - very entertaining. You could even email them questions directly. The game itself was fast and furious. Banked track was much faster and way more aggressive than the flat track derby. Girls were slamming into each other, causing two to four girl pile ups...a couple almost flew over the rails. Major and minor penalties were called frequently. The penalty mistress was Mighty Aphrodity and while she was generally obnoxious, she was scantily clad and a crowd pleaser. I guess in banked track derby, minor penalties are resolved by spinning the wheel and determining a resolution method by "official" means such as Pillow Fights or Arm Wrestling. Pretty awesome. There were some "legit" methods like a Skate Off, but in that case both girls still ended up rolling around on the track fighting. Finally, the Putas Del Fuego had their own cheerleaders: The Flamers. Who were indeed, flaming. (And by that of course I mean, they were on fire!) The team consisted of 2 guys (one sporting a Mohawk with red glitter - totally awesome), one gal, and a tranny. They had shimmering pom poms, fabulous makeup and sparkling signs, and when the Putas were introduced they even had a choreographed dance! Worth the $13 admission right there. Speaking of $$, I will say that this event is a wallet sucker. However, there are some tricks to avoid this, thus I will not minus a star: Buy online, it's two dollars cheaper. Do not park in the $7 event lot, park on the street and walk over. Drink beforehand, because Lone Stars are over $5. Two page "programs" are $1, so just get one and share. Halftime is 45 minutes, so cruise over to El Chile and grab food and drink. The season is underway and you can bet your golden boy-short clad butt (over ripped fishnets of course) that we are going back...with posse in tow! PS. My friends and I decided to check out roller derby at the start of this season, and we were instantly hooked. From the speed to the falls to the fights to the Penalty Wheel to the overall amazing athleticism of the skaters, a TXRD bout is something to look forward to. It's about the only sport I've found that I can sit through for hours without tiring or getting distracted. The bang for your buck is impressive, with 3 hours of entertainment for just 15 dollars (even less if you buy from a separate ticket vendor or from the rollergirls at a previous bout or if you happen to see them out and about in Austin). Concessions and parking certainly add to the costs, but you can avoid such spending by planning to park somewhere else and by filling up on food and drink beforehand. The derby community is a friendly bunch, so come to a bout and experience the most awesome sport you will ever get the chance to watch! Unwatchable. Like roller derby underwater. Before I get to the lacking skills of the skaters, let's talk about the venue. Most of the seats are 15 yards from the track. Between the track and those seats are 3 rows of seats below the level of the track (!) and something like a figure skaters judges' table. The atmosphere is un-electric. Have we learned nothing form the Frank Erwin Center, college basketball fans' most hated venue? Put the stands next to the track! Lose the lame tables and floor seats. I've never seen roller derby so slow! It's painful. The jammers call off the jams because they're too slow to catch up. The conditioning and skill of the skaters is quite low. They routinely fall down just because they can't skate. One of them fell just standing alone during halftime! Many of these girls have no business on skates. I don't know what the practices are like for the teams, but get back to basics. Please! I've seen a bunch of roller derby and love it. But I can't go back to this one. If you want to see roller derby how it should be, make a point to see LA Derby Dolls. The bleachers are right over the track. The skaters are cruising around the track! Don't get me wrong, I love love love roller derby, but this just seemed a little too glossy for my tastes. Where I come from, that evil city from the north called Dallas, derby is more grassroots and byo beer and lawn chair. I didn't really like the whole spin the wheel punishment for a penalty, seemed like it was only there to appease the people who came looking for a "sexy girl fight". I did like watching derby on a banked track, my first time, but I now know that I prefer my flat track homegirls. If for nothing more than the opportunity to sit in the suicide corner and hope to not be run over by a rogue skater grrrl. read more

I just went to this for the first time a couple of weeks ago. All I can say is booze + watching chicks pushing each other around = awesome Sunday! I actually asked what I had to do to join, and then they told me a story about some girl's compound fracture last season, and I changed my mind. LOL. I'm a wuss. But I can (and do) still enjoy watching! read more

Still love the Derby, but must note that the crowd drops way down as the season goes on. The people-watching suffers and that is sad, cause it was almost as much fun as watching the jams. read more

I LOVE ROLLER DERBY! If you have never attended a live derby bout and you live in Austin, SHAME ON YOU! You are missing out! The TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls all girl banked track derby league just celebrated its 10th anniversary. Austins league started the current roller derby revival, and it is now the fastest growing sport in the world. Bouts take place at Palmer Events Center on Barton Springs Road. Tickets are $15 at the door, doors open at 6 pm on bout nights and typical end at around 10 pm. This is a great night of entertainment for a tiny cost- bouts include 2 live bands, a full bar, merchandise and food are available. These events are suitable for children and typically the kids have a great time. Its great for people watching, and the derby action is fast and furious! Give your daughters a new role model for female empowerment! They even have the "derby brats" for girls under 18 who want to prepare to play in the big league! You will be surprised to see how many people turn out for these events- with more watching the live stream on the internet and the televised event.
