I think we blew the mind of a visiting very-cowboy New Mexico native into a thousand little pieces. He was warned but he mistakenly underestimated our ability to rope him into 'the biggest gay naked party' he's never imagined. Cowboy Sunshine will never be the same. Step 1: Band together with a group after way too many winter beers & T-Rex impersonations and settle on a theme. Ours was Garden of Eden. I was elected Satan, 'cos I look good in red. Simple. Step 2: Enter in a handful of local contests to win a ticket, 'cos those puppies have shot up a bit in price since 2008. Keep the hope alive. Step 3: Begin scavenging for parts of costume. 'Costume' is used liberally here, as most people's costumes are comprised of underwear, and headpiece and lots of strategically placed paint. Wrap a passport belt around your lower leg a few times and cover with leg warmers. It's cold this time of year. Step 4: Work out like your life (and dignity) depends on it. Think Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2. Yeah. That or as-close-as-humanly-possible or bust, kids. Step 5: Reply like a madwoman to a ticket giveaway, allowing your non-Carnaval-but-still-supportive friends to rsvp for you if you are driving between towns at the moment. Check your street mailbox several times a day. Repeat. Step 6: Rope others into your twisted group theme. In Garden of Eden we had Adam, Eve, a snake, an apple, the devil, an angel (Giddeon? I don't know) a tornado, a flying monkey. Who's missing? A tree of knowledge, God and the sun. Triple check, after a Screw Your Resolutions event. Step 7: Head to Eve's house and learn how to muddle Caipirinhas and have flames of eternal damnation painted on you. Try not to laugh when your armpits are painted. Fail in doing so. Pun back and forth between you and God for laughs. Make him a Caipirinha and ask him questions. Step 8: Do your Samba thing in boots to prevent mystery puddles from fuddling your feet ew. Wear a mask if you don't want your face plastered all over the interwebs but then pose with lots of strangers while losing God, your tree, Sunshine, Flower, Snake, Apple, Adam & Eve. Regroup. Repeat. Step 9: Shower all that off, refuel with Central Market frozen pizzas and don't wake Sunshine up till morning. He's had a rough weekend. Step 10: Start thinking of next year's theme. Bollywood anyone? -Fin-

This girl is no longer a Carnaval virgin thanks to free tickets from Yelp! I admit I was a tad bit intimidated beforehand--it's really difficult to accurately describe this event and the people that make it so special so I wasn't sure what I was walking in to. Behold! A feast for your eyes and a beat for your bootyshaking. No costume is out of place, but feathers, lights, skin and fishnets are more than welcome. I spotted more than a few Native Americans, alligators and peacocks floating around. The bevvies were easily accessible, too! Just another reason why Keep Austin Weird is totally appropriate for our city.

What a fantastic night, and thank you Yelp for hooking us up with tickets and backstage passes! So I will admit, I wasn't sure what to expect, nor was I sure I would fit in or even have a good time. So glad I didn't listen to my insecurities and that I went! Basically, it is a room full of people just wanting to enjoy good music, good costumes, good dancing, and good fun! No judgment people! I put on a rather short and low cut sparkly dress and felt like I looked scandalous walking down the street. Once inside Carnaval, I looked conservative! There is no costume that could go too far here. Yes, there were girls body painted, there were girls topless, there were old men wearing thongs... literally you can wear anything and get away with it here. The focus is to enjoy yourself, and wear whatever you want, who can argue with that! The drinks aren't cheap, but they aren't expensive either for an event like this. There are performers and live music playing in the front stage, and then bleachers on either side to sit and watch, or your can dance in the middle, or get a drink and sit towards the back. It is relaxed, and fun, and everyone enjoys themselves. Takeaway? Put on your party pants (or not) and join the party!

Not much work required but lots of impact. Pic from http://www.sambaparty.com/gallery_2005a.html

Carnaval Brasileiro began in 1975, organized by a group of home-sick Brazilian UT students trying to replicate the flavor of their home country's wild, colorful and raucous pre-Lenten celebration. Since then, fertilized by that stuff that has kept Austin weird, Carnaval Brasileiro gets bigger and more famous every year. My SO heard about it this year via a coworker and wanted to go. So... after a dinner at Sampaio, we headed for the Palmer Events Center. Since it's our first time, we decided to just be dressy as if going to a upscale night club, rather than throw together a couple of half-assed costumes. Believe me however, NO MATTER how one dresses, NOBODY gives a sh!t, and one WILL have a great time! And you don't have to be wildly exhibitionistic, or enjoy such display, nor do you have to be into a wide range of sexual preferences, or overt displays of one's gender (or lack thereof), nor do you have to be three sheets to the wind, to have a GREAT time at Carnaval Brasileiro. The costumes range from hangin'-out-at-the-neighborhood-bar garb, to a bunch of beads strings and face paint, to ultra-sexy boudoir wear, to Halloween-like costumes, to hyper-imaginative (and time-consuming!) home-made costumes. No matter WHAT you wear, you will fit in! There are AMAZINGLY hot bods (women AND men!), scantily clad or merely painted. Just standing in one place enjoying the passing crowd is great fun. But of course, there are the two shows by the drum corps and dancers of Austin's Samba School, "Academicos da Opera", and two sets by one of the best Samba bands in the US, Grupo Saveiro. Oh, you don't have to know how to samba either. We don't. Just bring your open mind and happy feet and you'll be all set. Next year, we're gonna go ALL OUT. The theme of our costumes has to be a secret of course, but think retro cult sci-fi movie gone hi-tech and sexy! (A side bonus is that, most likely, you can recycle your Halloween costume into your Carnaval costume, and vice versa.)

    Zazu!

such dancing very costume much naked WOW very conga so drinking much pictures WOW so friends very samba such happiness WOW This review brought to you by the letter "D," for doge. Go to Carnaval to see a whole lot of things you want to see and a whole lot of things you never want to see again. Bring cash for drinks, wear your best or most revealing costume, and dance your booty off. No matter what happens, it's sure to be a good time.

There are plants of all kinds, potted plant arrangements, outdoor decorative items, locally sourced food and bath and body products, jewelry, clothing, and baked goods for sale. The plants alone are a gardener's dream, and the prices are quite reasonable. There's a food court with picnic tables; the choices are good but expect high prices and little seating, like all festivals. Even better for the true 'greenie' are the professional talks on horticultural and outdoor topics, different on both Saturday and Sunday. As if that's not enough, there's live music too. I'd recommend coming early on Saturday if at all possible, as many plants are sold by Sunday. Leave extra time to walk around and see the gardens after all the booths and you'll be a happy camper. Bring a wagon if you have kids or plan to purchase plants. Don't forget bottled water, cash, and a hat. In 2014, the entrance fee was $7. Parking is in Zilker Park on the south side of Barton Springs, not the botanical gardens. Follow signs to the right for event parking. Parking is $5. My husband was especially excited that the Derailers were playing and I somewhat remember watching a few songs. I would like to thank all of those who made Austoberfest such an amazing event, the fun loving people of Yelp Austin for granting me access, my German heritage for creating in me a love of all things brews and brats, and metro for being my DD so that all I had to do was wobble myself back to the station and enjoy an air conditioned drunken snooze back home. In addition, I would also like to thank the pecan street festival going on next door who made the funnel cake I just had to have. So, here goes... In a land far far away and all the way back in January, Edible Austin decided to host their 4th annual boozy foodie heavenly get together. Never one to deny a bite of bac or a chug o' brew, I bought tix for the hubs and I as soon as the posting went up. Absolutely worth every cent of 50 bucks p/p! Greeted by really friendly folks at this years venue - Brazos Hall. Got wristband and walked to front table to pick up our sample glasses and forks for bites. Brazos Hall was the perfect venue with just the right amount of attendees. The event was sold out, and I was happy to see EA didn't over-sell as is often the case. Plenty of room to peruse around and not bump elbows and no long lines for the many beers and/or bacon inspired dishes offered throughout. Beer samples were 2oz pours (a silly TABC thing), but it was easy to get your fill by simply going from one table to the next and make rounds, stopping by food reps here and there in-between. Beers on-site inc, but were not limited to, TwistedX, Hops & Grain, Live Oak, Austin Eastciders.....major shout out to all the local ATX craft beers I love so much. There was also a large list of local food vendors offering up some pretty tasty and creative bites. Amy's Ice Cream (yes, beer flavored), fancy smanshy Pink Avocado catering (one of the best of the afternoon; Panna Cotta Pecan Bacon Crumble w/ Bourbon Cherries ), VOX Table (yummy sweet "Elvis" concoction), and my personal fav of the day was Baton Creole's Chicken Fried Bacon and Pecan Waffle (omgoodness - so so good!)...plus more. Overall: What a great way to spend a Saturday! At first I thought 3 hours was cutting it kind of short; however, it ended up being the perfect amount of time to indulge in everything offered (esp. since seating was not available). 5 hard stars! Highly recommend. I know where I'll be after the fastly approaching New Year. ;) Cheers!
