We asked for a slightly larger table for our group of four, and the staff was happy to accommodate us. We were seated quickly, and chips, salsa, and drinks arrived not long after. The chips were fresh, crisp, and still hot. The salsa was served warm and had good flavor. Cold beer, warm salsa, and hot chips made for a promising start. Our server was attentive throughout the visit and took good care of the table. We started with the Chicken Chicharrón appetizer because it sounded interesting and different. The flavor was good, but the dish itself was a bit messy and not especially appetizing in appearance. It seemed to be dark-meat chicken, possibly fried in crushed pork skins, served over hot sauce with pico on top. The problem was that the presentation created a timing issue. Once the chicken hit the sauce, the breading started to soften quickly, so it needed to be eaten fast. We did not win that race. I thought it was tasty, even if it was not the most eye-catching dish. The rest of the table was much less impressed, and there was some open discussion about whether we should have ordered queso instead. Since the appetizer took a little longer than expected and our entrees had already been ordered, we decided to skip adding anything else. The entrees came out in a timely manner, maybe even a little quicker than expected. The restaurant presents itself as more boutique and made-to-order than a standard Tex-Mex spot, so I was hoping for something a little more distinct. Unfortunately, nothing about our order really felt cooked to order. I ordered the Angus beef fajitas. They came out on the standard cast-iron skillet with plenty of onions, a few peppers, and a grilled jalapeño. The presentation was about what you would expect, but the vegetables were odd. The onions looked like they had been cut by someone unfamiliar with either knives or onions. The pieces were irregular, large, and almost petal-like, as if someone had started making an onion blossom and changed their mind. Meanwhile, the peppers were sliced very small and were barely noticeable on the plate. I understand food costs, and peppers are more expensive than onions, but the balance felt off. As for the beef, I ordered the Angus option, but I honestly could not tell that it was any different from the other beef dishes at the table. Either everyone got Angus at no extra charge, or I do not know anything about beef. It was heavily marinated and overcooked. I was not asked how I wanted it cooked, so I assume the meat was prepped ahead and reheated before serving rather than cooked fresh to order. The rest of the table had a similar experience. The food was not bad. In fact, it was good enough. But it did not stand out from the many other Mexican restaurants within a short drive. The prices seemed a little on the higher side, though not unreasonable. Overall, Luna Rosa offered a pleasant dining experience with cheerful, helpful staff and good service. The chips and salsa were a strong start, and the meal was perfectly acceptable. The food, however, landed closer to average than memorable. For the price and presentation, I was hoping for something that felt a little more special.
