I started PT after a surgery with Dr. Turvey (10/10, awesome surgeon and his level of care goes beyond the procedure) at TX Orthopedic. Danielle & Nicole are awesome and have generally be interested in 'me' and not being an insurance #. I go twice a week, front desk staff are always sweet. Parents, please be aware. My 22-year-old daughter was seen at Texas Orthopedics for a broken ankle. At her second appointment -- just 10 days after the fracture -- Dr. Robert Blais asked about her pain level. She explained that she was still experiencing significant pain. At that point, he stated he was concerned she could have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). We were stunned. It had been 10 days since a confirmed broken bone. From what we understand, pain at that stage is not unusual. While waiting for imaging, my daughter searched CRPS online. She discovered it is sometimes referred to as the "suicide disease" because of the severe, chronic pain associated with advanced cases. By the time we left the appointment, she was in tears -- terrified that she was facing a life-altering diagnosis. Whether CRPS should or should not have been mentioned that early is a medical judgment. What is not debatable is the emotional impact of introducing a severe, worst-case condition to a 22-year-old patient so soon after a routine fracture -- without clear context about probability, diagnostic criteria, or reassurance. The result was immediate and profound distress. Physicians absolutely have a duty to consider complications. They also have a responsibility to communicate carefully, proportionately, and with awareness of the psychological impact their words carry. This was our experience. Parents and patients: ask questions. Ask about likelihood. Ask about timing. Ask whether a concern is common, rare, or simply precautionary. And if something feels disproportionate, seek a second opinion. Advocacy matters. read more

I highly recommend Texas Orthopedics along with their Physical Therapy side. Dr. McDonald and his PA, Kate, are fantastic. Kate has great bedside manner and made me feel at ease when getting ready for surgery. She also took the time to set my mind at ease post-surgery about the recovery process. AD, on the PT side, is also really kind and gentle. He takes time to build trust and a relationship so the PT process can be effective. Make an appointment for the 38th St location for first thing in the morning. Waited 20 minutes before being called to the desk. I was informed the Dr had an emergency and couldn't make the pre scheduled appointment. Do I get to charge the "no show fee?" I was then told the only appointment available was in Kyle. Reluctantly I schedule. This is an extra 30-45 minutes during rush hour traffic. Upon arrival, I meet the doctor. Not impressed as I have pairs of shoes older than he is. After about 5 minutes reviewing my MRI, he says that I definitely need surgery. He asked if I'm a smoker. I say yes. He tells me that him performing surgery would be "a hard no" strictly on the fact I smoke, even after stating I need surgery. Wow ! I say thank you, and leave. Had the surgery done by a FAR more qualified surgeon. While that surgeon asked if I smoke, and told me I need to quit, the surgery was scheduled the following week. Should've went to the real surgeon to begin with. Would never go to Texas Orthopedics again, nor will I be recommending this business to anyone. read more

It depends on which specialty you're seeing at this practice. From my experience, I give 5 stars to Greg Westmoreland and Gabe Petty in dealing with my knee issues. They are professional and took excellent care of my problem. I give 1 star to Ai Mukai and her staff. I had to call twice to get an appointment to see her (not her PA) to discuss specific medical issues before scheduling an RFA procedure. After a long time on the phone waiting for the scheduler to get a hold of her so that she can book my appointment, Mukai refused to see me and referred me to her PA. Apparently after seeing me the first time months ago, she's only willing to see me when administering an epidural shot or performing a procedure. I told the scheduler to tell her that I am taking my business to another practice. I'll continue to use this practice only for any knee issues in the future. read more

Rheumatologist Dr. Joseph Martinez and his nurse Heather have given me excellent, personalized care for Osteoporosis. Heather was very kind and understanding when I explained to her my concerns, and she worked tirelessly to get my insurance to approve the treatment that my spine surgeon recommended for bone building. At the Cedar Park Texas Orthopedics office, Heather provided excellent training in how to administer my medication. I greatly appreciate Dr. Martinez and his nurse Heather, and I recommend them for quality care in Rheumatology. read more

I had dislocated my shoulder dr.hill isy doctor who did nothing but kept asking me to keep visiting . And his assistants are only good to send me back to full duty now I can't even move my hand 100 % how come I can go back to full duty who is responsible if I hurt my self on duty. After speaking with the billing department the day of the appointment to ensure I don't pay for services I never received- I was not examined or given care by the physician- I just received an invoice via email. I was assured by the billing department that this would not happen, and yet it has. I've just left a message for the individual filling in for Stephanie, the "client care contact", and am hoping to resolve before this goes up the flagpole. I was told to wait in the hallway, treated very poorly, spent my money and received NO CARE because I committed the crime of having nail polish on(?)- to bill me afterwards is beyond the pale. Bold. Stupid. Inappropriate. Texas Orthopedics: please call me back- or reach out on Yelp- so we can resolve this now vs. later. There are ways that I can escalate this, but I'd rather just close the loop directly with you and move onto my new doctor, who did provide me care and is easy to reach. read more

The low rating is specifically for Dr. Koval--a Rheumatologist under the Texas Orthopedics umbrella. Do not go to this doctor. All they care about here is shuffling as many patients through the door as possible. I am 35 and went in with mounting symptoms, namely, sudden onset of severe joint pain, swelling/stiffness, severe fatigue, weight loss, muscle twitching and weakness. Koval didn't care to see the videos I took of my muscles twitching, nor did he even perform any sort of exam or look at my hands (I had explained that my pain was the worst in my hands). Koval ordered some basic blood work, primarily looking for antibodies & proteins that would signify inflammation or something autoimmune. They all came back negative/normal, which the office called to tell me. They then said I needed to come in for a follow-up so that the doctor could "discuss my results with me". I waited TWO MONTHS to get in for the follow-up. Once in, the doctor didn't even show up. It was his nurse practitioner, and all she did was hand me a copy of the negative labs. (It is worth mentioning that I complained about this ridiculous and pointless cash-cow of a visit and have been told that I will not be charged. We shall see.) Koval is not the doctor to go to if you are looking for someone to invest in you ... to think critically or care... to not rely solely on bloodwork. He did not mention or even consider the possibility of me having seronegative RA (which is the case for 20% of RA patients), nor did he suggest having my bones X-rayed to double-check for any damage. No sort of plan b, additional testing, etc whatsoever. He just had his nurse tell me to go to a neurologist. If you're dealing with symptoms that are not an open-and-shut case, don't waste your money, time or emotions on this shitty doctor. Find someone who will take the time to really consider YOUR circumstances and not just run you through the assembly line that is our unfortunate healthcare system. read more

I saw Dr. Hardy for a minor wrist sprain. Appointments were backed up and I was seen 45 minutes late, but otherwise the staff and Dr. Hardy were kind and competent. What I really, really did not like is that TX Ortho marked up the recommended Wrist Widget by 40% from what the manufacturer charges. FORTY PERCENT! That's preposterous. If the clinic recommends an orthopedic device, cost-compare before you walk out of there with theirs. (The 40% figure assumes the clinic buys more than one widget at a time and gets 2-day priority shipping.) read more

I am impressed. I have been dealing with Orthopedic issues for a few years due to an invincible youth lifestyle and also lots of music playing, walking long distances over bad terrain and burning the candle at 5 ends. Who I had been seeing before, at another practice, had left. Upon multiple recommendations from other doctors, I started seeing Dr. Stockton. Great choice as he wanted to look at problems in a new way, and that turned out to be a great decision. Every visit I was called within minutes of my appointment time. This place is a "surgery mill". Their goal is to push through as many patients as possible and get paid. I have worked in healthcare admin for 10 years and am familiar with how to have conversations about insurance and payment. The checkout clerk was very condescending and would not answer questions about my insurance directly, which gave me the impression he was trying to get me to pay more without me doing the research with my insurance company. They are very misleading about how your insurance works and will push you towards their in house services without acknowledging your right to choose as a patient. Right off the bat I was concerned that I was not seeing the physician I had scheduled an appointment with. I was scheduled to see the PA. I do not have a problem with seeing a PA but if I'm coming there for a surgical consult I would like to speak with the dr that will actually cut me. So I met with Dr. hill a "trauma surgeon" who gave me a half assed exam, and without any background information determined I didn't need surgery on my knee without looking at any radiology diagnostic imaging. These practices are what is wrong with American healthcare. The bedside care is very disingenuous and the physicians are there to maximize profits, while preying on the ignorance of the healthcare system of their patients. I've been a patient of Texas Ortho for 29 years. I have seen several specialists in the group. I have happy with their honesty, care, surgeries, etc. I was upset when the founder, Dr. Barbara Bergin left, but I now see Dr. Parker Abblitt MD and I think he is great as well. My Gf had Kyphoplasty surgery per their recommendation. She still had intense pain weeks after. We went in for a consult, and it was decided that another MRI be ordered. Over a week later no order has been sent to insurance. We check everyday and leave a message to call us to let us know what is going on. As best we can tell the regular staff that sends the request is on vacation, and the fill-in can't or won't get this request to insurance. The staff has blocked us from contacting the Doctor that agreed to order the MRI. We call everyday, and all we get is lame excuses. Where is the care? My Gf is just supposed to stay in pain. She can't work, or progress healing, because the staff is lame and uncaring? Before the surgery the MRI request was done almost immediately. read more

I had several procedures done by Texas Orthopedics, great success with Dr Foster, then I went to Dr Kris Stockton for a hammer toe, With trust developed by Dr Foster, I went and had the surgery done by Stockton, I now have two totally frozen toes, in follow up appointments he said "EVERYTHING LOOKS FINE TO ME"....this guy is a clown who has disabled one of my two feet, I was sent by Texas Orthopedics to another guy in the system and after examining me said "what do you want me to do"? I realize surgery in any form is a roll of the dice and it's another injury you have a better chance of coming back from, that being said, the abandonment that I felt after surgery was the worst part. I know Dr. McArthur has many good reviews on HealthGrades, but I wasn't impressed. He diagnosed me with gout. About that: (1) He said it's generally caused by meat and shellfish, so I told him I don't eat those (not since 1985, and never in my life, respectively), then he said that sometimes the cause is unknown. After I left his office I looked it up and found that it can be caused by weight loss, and I have indeed been losing weight (intentionally) recently. I would have preferred to have gotten the answer from him (after all, I was paying for his expertise) rather than leaving the office confused and having to look it up myself. (2) He prescribed indomethacin, didn't review side effects and risks, and didn't compare it with other medications available. That's important, because when I looked up the drug: (3) Indomethacin seems to be the most dangerous of the drugs for gout, and it's no more effective than the safer medicines. Incidentally, I've been successfully treating my gout flares with a combination of cherries, vitamin C, and over-the-counter Ibuprofen (much safer than indomethacin). All of these have been shown to be efficacious in peer-reviewed research. --------------------------- SERIOUS RISKS --------------------------- "Indomethacin can increase your risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, even if you don't have any risk factors....Tell your doctor if you have ever had: heart disease...." (Drugs.com) My triglycerides to HDL ratio put me at an extremely high risk of heart attack, but Dr. McArthur didn't ask about any of my risk factors for heart disease (or anything else), and was silent about the heart attack risk from the medication (and all other risks from the medication). "Before using this medication, tell your doctor...your medical history, especially of...liver disease...." (WebMD) My PCP said I have possibly fatty liver based on imaging, but Dr. McArthur never asked about my liver (or any other contraindications). --------------------------- LACK OF SUPERIOR EFFICACY: --------------------------- "Consider nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) other than indomethacin....[O]ther NSAIDs have been shown to be effective in gout,(1-8) and indomethacin has never been proven to be any more efficacious.(9)" [Can Fam Physician. 2009 Dec; 55(12): 1209-1212] "Previous studies have shown the various medications to be equally effective." I was hopeful after my initial visit here, but it went downhill after. They suspected I had a herniated disc and was in pretty bad shape when I came for my visit. They prescribed me a steroid pack and muscle relaxer, but nothing for the pain. I communicate via their messaging system that I was getting worse each day and they finally gave me some pain meds, but those didn't help me at all. I then communicated I wasn't sure I could do the MRI because I couldn't lay flat without my leg seizing up in pain. They did not give me anything to help, I still went and tried. The MRI techs had to see me struggle and cry. We got it done with me laying on my side. I never made it to my follow up appointment the next day because I had to be rushed to the ER the next day due to unbearable pain. When I reached out about the ER needing my MRI results since I was rushed there, they said ok but expressed absolutely no sympathy for my situation. In fact earlier in the week when I was asking for help, they suggested I go to the ER. The only benefit of the ER was getting stronger meds I needed. But now I'm still told to go see a spine specialist, but I will be going elsewhere. You should want to do everything you can to help your patients, not send them to the ER. read more

I am 67 years of age and I began to suffer pain, tingling and numbness in my left hand. After "diagnosing myself via internet", I went to Dr. Hardy. He was easy to find and I waited a reasonable amount of time. He knew what he was looking for but needed to run a backup test through a neurologist to be safe. The neurologist was out of office. The meeting with the neurologist confirmed what was thought. I was able to swiftly meet with Doctor. Hardy and schedule surgery for carpel and cubital tunnel syndromes. Surgery was a breeze and the team was outstanding. In particular, Nurse Truong was very good. I highly recommend Dr. Hardy and his staff for hand ailments. They are pros. read more

I couldn't speak more highly of Texas Orthopedics. This review is lengthy but I hope it helps someone, especially if you are experienced foot or ankle issues. I have gone through a series of podiatric issues in the past 2 years and Dr. Snowden has been the only one who has been able to help me get relief and heal. Last year I went through a series of therapies with a podiatrist (Austin Foot & Ankle Center) with no results and culminating in the most painful steroid shot in my foot that I swore I'd never let someone give me that shot again. Then I switched to an orthopedist and met Dr. Snowden who told me he understood but to trust him and he performed the same procedure as virtually painless as possible. He listened to me and suggested therapies and I healed up in no time after wasting 2 months in pain, suffering, and hundreds if dollars in treatments before switching to him and being completely healed in just a few visits. I had a similar problem emerge in my other foot this year and as it seemed emergent I decided to go see a different orthopedic office who was open on weekends (Direct Orthopedic Care). After 2 visits and another HORRIBLE experience where I couldn't walk for days because of this injection I made the quick decision that I will return to Texas Orthopedics for my remaining follow up appointments and never let anyone except Dr. Snowden treat my feet ever again. He listened (unlike the other doctor who wouldn't even give me the time of day), treated me with kindness, and came up with an effective treatment plan again. I truly don't know where I would be without Texas Orthopedics and Dr. Snowden. Also their office is very clean and professional with a great staff and transparent and fair billing. They genuinely are there to help you feel better, not to just collect co-pays. Only con is the building is a little confusing to find I get lost everytime but thats not their fault... just a heads up for future patients. Read all signs! :) read more

I had an accident a year ago breaking my elbow and my regular orthopedic doctor couldn't see me. I was nervous about coming here because I wasn't sure the quality of the treatment I would receive. Dr. Loeb was my surgeon and I can't stress enough about how great it's been. He really took the time to explain my treatment to me and did an incredible job. I would recommend him hands down to any of my friends and family. It's approaching a year now and I wanted to wait to write this review to see how the follow-up care and appointments would go. Texas ortho is the best! I fell from my bike and fractured my elbow: BAD. I walked in on Dr Smith at the quarry lake office on a Friday just before lunch, no appt, no pre authorizatin, all the other docs had closed their schedule and the only physician present, Dr Smith, sees me. Smith does a local inter joint injection and reduces the displacement in the office. So, less than 3 hours after my accident, my elbow is diagnosed, reduced and splinted! And he gets his elbow specialty partner, Dr Laverty to repair the thing first case Monday! I am about two weeks out of surgery now and am following Dr. Lavety"s exercise directions. I start physical therapy in a few days. Thanks to the docs and the clerks and clinic assistants who gave me the best chance to have an elbow with good function! read more

I've been lucky enough to work with 3 medical professionals at Texas Orthopedics: Dr. Ai Mukai, her Clinical Nurse Specialist Kelley Pennell, and Physical Therapist Sharyn Brady. All of them have been top-notch. A friend referred me to Dr. Mukai last year after the mysterious pain in my right shoulder came back for a third time. At that point, the pain was radiating down into my arm, I was losing sensation in my fingers, and I could barely sleep. Needless to say, I was at my wits' end as nothing I'd tried --hot showers, OTC painkillers, regular massages, chiropractic adjustments--seemed to help. I was able to get an appointment quickly. Dr. Mukai treated me with such compassion that I immediately felt like I was gonna be okay. She asked some questions, performed a few simple tests, and told me it sounded like a disc injury resulting in a pinched nerve. She prescribed some stronger painkillers to help me sleep and sent me for an MRI at another Texas Orthopedics location (everyone there was great, too). Once the MRI confirmed her diagnosis, she told me they could fix it with physical therapy so I wouldn't have to undergo surgery. Awesome! Dr. Mukai went on maternity leave shortly before I started PT and left me in the capable hands of her Clinical Nurse Specialist, Kelley Pennell, who has monitored my progress in the most efficient and thorough manner I could possibly expect. She's always prompt and upbeat, and she's never fazed by my questions. I did my PT with Sharyn Brady in the same office. She's incredibly personable and managed to make it fun for me. She helped me correct my posture, set me up with some exercises to strengthen my neck and shoulder, and after 12 sessions over 4 months, I feel fantastic. I'm actually sad I won't be seeing her anymore now that I'm a zero on the pain scale. I'd be remiss if I failed to mention the fabulous office staff as well. They're always friendly, quick and helpful, and they never yell at me when I'm late. ;) All told, I can't recommend the good folks at Texas Orthopedics highly enough. read more

I recently had back surgery at Texas Ortho. The surgery went well, but any contact with Texas Ortho after the operation has been nearly impossible. Yes, all clinics are like this. But this is the worst I've experienced, and really needs addressing. Management, are you listening? After my back surgery, I was running low on pain meds. I called the Texas Ortho Question Line, and held for 30 minutes. After 15 minutes it started offering me a callback. I finally gave up and left a message. Several hours later, my phone rang. I wasn't quick enough getting it out of my pocket and they hung up. It was Texas Ortho. I immediately called back, and found myself on hold for an appointment. I hung up and called the Question line again. And waited on hold for 15 minutes again, left a message again, and two hours later, guess what? My phone rang 3 times. When I got it out of my pocket, it was Texas Ortho. And of course I couldn't return the call. I called the Question line again, same story. Dammit. Four hours spent, and I haven't even talked to a Human! An hour or so later (nearly 5 pm) my phone rang again, and this time I was successful answering before they hung up. I got a nurse, who took my info and told me that she would have to call a 'triage nurse' to take the message for real. I waited for over 30 minutes on hold, but finally talked to a nice guy who promised to have my prescription ready at the 38th street location tomorrow. Not at all convenient, having to drive ten miles through Austin at rush hour, with fresh spinal surgery, but I did it. And the prescription was not there. It was at the far north Austin location, much farther than I can possibly drive. They suggested I come back to the 38th street location after lunch? This is completely unacceptable customer service. I was referred to Texas Orthopedics, specifically Dr. McDonald, by a friend who had been his patient for an ACL tear. I've had a terrible pain in my hip for 18 months and was about to go insane when she suggested I see him. I told her I needed a doctor who would listen to me and not just tell me I was fine and send me on my way and she assured me that Dr. McDonald would be that person. I was fortunately able to make an appointment for just a few business days later, only to find they were running a little bit behind. The nurse took me back and I had some xrays taken of my hip (and my shoulder for another issue). Then I sat and waited in the exam room for a while. I began to get concerned that their backlog would mean a rushed appointment for me. Finally, Dr. McDonald came in the room and we went over everything for both my shoulder and my hip. He never once rushed me, let me ask every question I wanted to, repeated everything so I could write it down, and I felt like I was his only patient that day. I was excited to have a diagnosis on both my shoulder and my hip so that I could move forward with physical therapy. After only two physical therapy visits my pain is already diminished. My only complaint is that the walls in the exam rooms are paper thin. I heard all about my neighbor's issue with having surgery on a particular day as opposed to another day, so I can only imagine my neighbors heard me shout in pain during my exam. It's strange to me that when builders know they are building a facility specifically for a medical office, they make the walls so incredibly thin and this is a very new building. Other than that, Dr. McDonald and the staff are all fantastic, patient, and friendly, and I encourage you to go here. read more

I went to Texas orthopedics and Dr. Parella for a shoulder injury resulting from a motor vehicle accident. Not only did I not see the doctor the first visit, but both he and the nurse practitioner spent a total of less than 15 minutes in the room with me between two visits. To add on top of that they misdiagnosed the severity of my injury greatly. They quickly rushed three x-rays and told me I would be fine after a couple weeks of physical therapy. After attending PT for a few weeks something felt off so I went for a second opinion. Turns out the damages to my shoulder were much more severe than previously stated and I now require surgery. The best part is that I have their office calling me saying they are going to send me to collections even though I still have an active claim with the other drivers insurance open. When trying to explain that to them all they tell me is that its "patient responsibility." I had gone to Texas orthopedics in the past so they were the first people I called when I hurt my shoulder, but it was disheartening to see an extreme lack of attention in the care I received as well being threatened with collections while trying to focus on my health. read more

I first have to say in some ways I feel 4 stars is quite a stretch. On the other hand, there are a couple of individual doctors, physical therapists, and tecnicians in this group who warrant 5 stars! What you get with Texas Orthopedics is hit or miss. I almost have to say you either get GREAT service, or you get shake your head, lift your chin, walk away as you count to 10, and get a second opinion or ask someone else to take care of whatever small service you need that some of the staff are unable to deliver professionally. I am still a patient in this group, and have surgery in my near future. Wish me luck that I hit the 4 and above and avoid the weak links that drag this practice down! read more
