I'll try to keep this quick. The food is excellent. I've been a couple of times and sampled most of their menu and I can't say anything bad about it. Oxtails, jerk chicken, wings, the sides and the beverages are fantastic. At the average of $25 - 35 per plate, they do give good portions that can last a day or two if you can't finish it in one sitting. However, there is a VERY BIG NEGATIVE and that's the security and the service. I understand that their location might not be in the best neighborhood, but they tend to treat the customers like criminals. If you place an order online for pickup, when you arrive you must show your photo ID and the credit card you ordered with. If you don't have those, you're pretty much out of luck. Say you're picking up an order for an office or a party and you don't have the card on hand, they won't release the food. This is one of the worst policies I've ever seen in my life. I refuse to believe that someone will randomly show up at this restaurant knowing exactly what's in an order and give the name of who placed the order all for the sake of stealing a plate of food. There's a part of me that doesn't want to go back because of their security and the lackluster service once you get inside. read more

Like they are OVERLY strict on pick up times, everyone (employees and security guards) speaks to the customers with indignation, like they are trying to son everybody at every TURN. I decided to give Tev's Kitchen a try today. It was on my mind for a few months after watching LATRYGUY's review a couple of months ago. I've come to the conconclusion that when he arrives for food reviews they automatically load up his plate on purpose. I tried the lamb plate with double mac and it was an additional $7 for extra mac. The order was over $50. The food was hot upon delivery and the wait time was 20 minutes. I however, was disappointed in the lamb portions and size of meat cuts. The lamb pieces were extremely small (4) pieces per order. The lamb was extremely thin and not tinder to bite. The flavor was good, but the portion and cut size of the lamb was unacceptable in my honest opinion. I wasn't expecting Ruth Chris or Eddie V cuts, but atleast if you are going to use those cuts of lamb include at least (6) per order. I understand lamb can and is expensive and food cost are higher these days. I think the intent is good, but better excution is needed. In my opinion I would consider a decent plate with (6) lamb of a decent cut or if you continue to serve (4) use better thicker tender cuts of meat. I also expect lamb to be tinder also. This however comes with skill and execution of the chef. The mac was plentiful and flavorful. It was however a little greasy which isn't a fault. The cabbage was good but could use more seasoning in my opinion. I love supporting black businesses and will more than likely spend whatever the cost, but I may never come back. The location is in a sketchy area of town near 48th and Gramercy.I grew up on Arlington and Jefferson, so this isn't a fault or jab at the location. They have two-armed security guards at the entrance upon entering. Parking can be a hassle so be warned. I parked around the corner and had to walk past an alley so BE ADVISED! read more

The macaroni and cheese is top tier! Probably the best I've had from a Jamaican eatery. Overall the food is good and you get nice portions. However the wait will prevent me from returning, unfortunately. I arrived relatively early and still had to wait 1 hour just to order. Then another 1.5 hours to get my ordered food. I can't lose another 2.5 hours just for an order. This is the norm. Oxtail is $38. A combo (for example curry chicken and oxtail) is $47. I can't speak highly enough of the incredible service and delicious food at this place! I've visited twice now, and each time has been a fantastic experience. The customer service is exceptional, and the staff truly make you feel welcome. Now, let's talk about the food! The jerk chicken is simply fantastic, and the oxtails are nothing short of amazing--truly mouth-watering! The plantains, too, are delicious and are a must-try. Online ordering was quick & efficient, but be prepared to be thoroughly vetted before actually getting your food. When I indicated to the security guard I was there to pick up an online order, I was asked to present the following: email confirmation, photo ID, and the transaction in my Apple wallet. I was fine with the first two, but I thought the latter was a bit excessive. I wouldn't have gotten an email confirmation without paying for the order, and my ID matched the confirmation, I don't get why that wasn't sufficient. Anyway, once I finally made it through the door I was helped quickly at the pickup window and my food was ready. I ordered a double-wing plate with sweet chili and hot lemon pepper. The wings were generously sauced (a plus in my book) and served over a bed of garlic mashed potatoes. The sides were mac & cheese and broccoli. Two generous cups of ranch were provided, as well as a complimentary Kool-Aid. The hot lemon pepper wings were a bit too salty for my taste, but I enjoyed everything else. Tried it for the first time yesterday and was not disappointed. The short ribs were the best that I have EVER had. The cabbage and mac n cheese were also delicious. I ordered online, and my order was ready 5 minutes after I arrived. I appreciate the credit card and ID verification, some people complain about it but I think it is great. The portions were really large so we got to make it into two meals so it is a good bang for your book. We waited on the back patio for our number to be called since it was a small space. Yes, the wait time was over an hour or so. Made some friends in the line I talked to the whole time to keep me occupied from waiting. I ordered curry chicken plate, jerk salmon plate and wings (I believe they were thai chili flavor I could be wrong) Portions are really huge, definitely will have leftovers. Was the food good? Yes. I visited Tev's and Family Restaurant the day after Thanksgiving around 4 PM, and to my surprise, there wasn't a line down the street. I knew right away I had lucked out! There were about 10 people ahead of me, and the young lady who helped me was friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable. Since it was my first time trying oxtail, I mentioned I'd heard great things about the restaurant. She suggested a half-and-half plate, and when I mentioned I wasn't in the mood for cabbage, she recommended an extra serving of mac & cheese instead. She explained it would be a bit more expensive, but I agreed--and I'm so glad I did! After a short 15-minute wait, I received my order. The container was generously packed--it must have weighed at least 5 pounds. Once I got home, I was impressed by how incredible everything looked--and it tasted even better! The oxtail was perfectly cooked, and the mac & cheese was rich and flavorful. Between the outstanding food and excellent customer service, I was beyond impressed. Tev's cooking is top-tier, plenty of seating inside and outside as well and I'll definitely be back for more! I'm SO HAPPY to do this review of Tev's. I've seen so many reels of this restaurant, and everyone seemed to love the food. Some of the critics like everything so I wasn't sure what to think. Som the bar for this review was super high. I just got back home from food pickup. Before opening the container, I immediately weighed my food because $41.62 is a hefty price for me for a boxed meal, even if it's oxtails. The weight, 2.9 lbs, gave me confidence we were off to a good start. I know I have at least 2 meals. The average of $20.81 is a super reasonable price per meal! I opened the box and it was jammed packed with food. My visual estimate was 3 meals worth of mac and cheese, 3 meals rice and peas; 2 meals oxtails, 1.5 meals of cabbage, two pieces of plaintain. Everything looked and smelled delicious. (Interestingly, the smell wasn't really apparent in the car on the ride home.) I prepared my first plate (see below), heated the food a little and voila, it's time to do the darn thing. OH, MY GOODNESS! aka WOW!!! This is the best commercial (but home-cooked tasting) meal I've had in a long time. I promise you, as a foody and for real critic, EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS. I do not have one complaint about flavor--everything was flavorful. The cabbage was absolutely perfectly seasoned, as were the oxtails. I hadn't had oxtails in 20 years and these were tender and tasty, had a perfect salt level and not fatty at all. They tasted exactly like I envisioned (very close to short ribs.) The mac and cheese was very good as well, super cheesy with the perfect pasta chewiness. It really was the PERFECT meal! I wouldn't change anything about the meal. After I polished off my first plate (see pic below), I went back and ate all of the cabbage, and a few more bites of rice and peas, mac and cheese, and oxtail meat. Because, I'm a bone cleaner two of the oxtails (which seemed a little small) and some meat that had fallen off was enough for this meal. Dang, dang, dang.... sooooooo good. And I must add, Tev's is an experience even if you pick up your food and bring it home. I ordered online at 11;32 a.m. through Toasttab with the pickup time of 2:00 p.m. (That's the time they gave for an online order at that time.) The ordering is real easy with clear instructions. They issue your receipt via email and text and you just wait for your time. You'll get another text when your pickup is within 10-15 minutes ready for pickup. When I got there (2:04 p.m.), there were two lines: online orders take-out and current ordering. There were about 7 people in the takeout and 11 outside and about 9 people inside for the current order line. People are picking up orders, crossing the streets back and forth, and the parking is catch as catch can within a half-block radius. Business is booming and rightfully so. There's a person to check your ID to ensure no mishaps; and boom, you sign for your order, and you are on your way. The guard checking your id for order pick up and the window clerk were both friendly and professional. It was a smooth process that took about 10 minutes. Me and my food signed out at 2:14 p.m. TEV's I had a great experience. You really are doing this right!!! Thank you for having it all together. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TEV'S. Just a small note, I only had Jamaican food a few times and I've ordered more traditional foods so I can't vouch for the Jamaican-ness of the food, but it's definitely great tasting food. read more

The original location on 48th street has amazing Jamaican Ox Tails Plate, and Curry Goat Plate. A bit pricey however the portion size and flavor is worth every dime spent. And a drink is included. Now the B Location ( Gardena ) is fairly new and have a few kinks to work on with food quality and taste. However for the food prices food has to improve. read more
