After doing some exploring on the Isle of Skye on Sunday 14 July 2019, I was thinking about lunch…read moreand dinner options. There are a number of restaurants in Portree and food available in the general area. However, it was prime tourist season and the lines could be long. So, I decided to see if I could find a grocery store to get some late lunch/early dinner items. The parking lot of this Co-op on the periphery of Portree is large and easy to access. The store was well laid out with items easy to find. As I was looking over items, I noticed a half rotisserie chicken in the hot foods section. No, I thought. I did not travel from the west coast of the United States of America to Scotland to eat half a rotisseries chicken. After looking around some more, I went with it. I got a few other items as well. Check out was straightforward and I did not have payment issues. Unsure of where to dispose of the remains of the rotisserie chicken once I ate it, I noticed a trash receptacle out front of the building. I thought eating in my rental car in the parking lot and disposing of my trash at the receptacle sounded like a good alternative to leaving the chicken remains in my hotel room. I was not the only person who had the same eating in the parking lot idea. The chicken was tender, tasty, and, very thankfully, not messy. The other items I got were good as well.

This at the BUSIEST TIME OF DAY in the holiday season! Thus people milling about in confusion & mass queues. Many people incl. me wasted much time trying to get these tills to work - no notices to say they didn't & no staff told anyone.

Did our grocery shopping here during our stay on Skye. It was just a 10' drive away from our…read moreholiday rental. But even if not, this is one of the best options if you need to do grocery shopping. It's a big store and the parking lot always pretty full. But there's always a spot. In summer you will be greeted by dozens of midges the moment you step out of the car - aggressive little buggers. So if you need to wait for somebody, best to stay in the car. There are mixed reviews about this shop. And at first glance one can see why. The store looks a bit dated, a bit run-down. And inside there are several shelves empty or at least close to being empty. But this is mainly because there's a huge number of visitors doing their shopping here, so naturally stuff gets sold out. And whenever we went, it was always packed here. But it is actually a very good store this one. We were suprised by the good quality of all the meat here (rump and sirloin steaks, lamb, bacon, duck) and the variety of the food. All real good value. Ok, the wine section didn't blow us away, but had some enjoyable stuff. We found what we've looked for: soda, water, milk, rice, pasta, veggies, fruits, crackers, bread, eggs, guacamole and hummus dip, wine, Prosecco. Made some enjoyable dinners out of these ingredients.

They answer your questions but that's about it. 4 stars because it's what we expected and food was tasty. Minus 1 because of limited gluten free options.

The last 200m or so is a steeper one-lane road, but not problems here if you just look ahead a bit. The parking lot by the Oyster Shed has limited spaces. Again here...just don't rush - bring some time to either wait for a spot or to park further down and walk up. We got lucky and got a spot. Two RVs parked here too. Almost couldn't get in and out and did hold everybody up - so I wouldn't recommend bringing your RV up here. Inside you order by tablet. It's quite a big space inside the shop. Once you got your food (outside) you can sit down right in front or head around the corner to the big table with some views. We were happy to sit out front though. Ordered two kinds of cooked topped oysters (salmon/seaweed and spicy seaweed chutney), crab legs, a softshell crab and half-a-dozen of regular oysters. The fresh raw oysters were nice and of good quality. The cooked oysters were decent, maybe easier for oyster-beginners since the toppings cover the sea/oyster flavour. The softshell crab was really tasty - but also a bit pricey for our served size. The best item were the crab legs cluster. A good load of legs for little money. Very tasty! All in all a good place to enjoy some seafood. Some items were great, others also very good - but not great. If we come back it would be for the Crab legs...
