It's pretty useful having this round the corner, as it's open from 7am - 11pm every day. It's well stocked with most essential everyday stuff, has a cash machine and a reasonably sized car park. read more

Choo choo welcome to sausage town!…read more If meat is your crack, get to the Cronx and get a taste of cracking Krakow and other regional Polish produce! At the sausage bar they'll kindly let you try before you buy and they go to great 'lengths' to help you understand what's what. The gateaux and cake selections are also quite marvellous. I took an old school dark chocolate cherry gateaux to an Easter picnic and needless to say there were slim pickings when it came to having seconds. On another occasion a dense biscuity brick of a cheesecake was quite satisfactory among friends too! I promise you, you'll go wild in the aisles here and it's a great incentive to learn some Polish to find out what other potentially delicious treats are hiding behind the mysterious pretty packagings. I wouldn't want to offend anyone's Babcia but more of them ready made deli fresh pierogis to go are coming home with me next time!

Buckle up boys and girls because this little market is going to take you for a ridiculous journey…read moredown the craft beer rabbit hole. Freshfields Market is a small easily overlooked corner shop that looks like it's only used during those times in desperation (i.e., when all the other shops are closed and you NEED an obscure herb.) WRONG. Freshfields Market has an ASTONISHING array of local and international craft beers. Seriously, there is a whole freaking WALL devoted to the fine art of artisanal brews. From the well known craft breweries like Thornbridge to the distinctly local like Cronx, Freshfields has a dizzying selection of beers that would make even the most casual of drinkers tingle with excitement. Every time my husband and I visit we stand in front of the shelves like the proverbial kids in a candy shop unable to make a decision on which of the beers to try. It is no secret that I enjoy my beer. I brew it, I'm looking for a career in it... and this, man... this shop makes me feel like a child. It makes me excited to be a part of a growing demographic of young professionals who are looking to push the boundaries of brewing. Moreover, makes me excited as a consumer to see what was once a dwindling selection of ales suddenly explode into an interest in the "traditional" beer of England. If you find yourself overwhelmed by the selection Freshfields have got your back. They've hired a seasoned-drinker and well-educated staff member to help you pick out the perfect beer for your palate. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL. They not only carry bottled beer but also they have the option of purchasing four pint carry outs that are tapped from two barrels so you get your beer straight from the barrel and not bottle conditioned. As far as the prices go, they're about the price you would expect to pay for craft beer - which is to say not that cheap. However, the last two times I have gone they have done a deal on craft beers - something like 6 craft beers for £12, I can't remember. Either way, this little corner shop may seem to be like any other but don't let the outside fool you, inside it is Croydon's very own craft beer Valhalla and if it suits you, I would go on a pilgrimage as soon as possible.

Also helps you keep an eye on how much you are spending and also to find out the price of those items missing pricing on the shelves. This is definitely the best part of this store! Sometimes supermarket shopping is just utterly depressing. The Sainsbury's Local at the end of my…read moreroad is a complete joke. Every time I stroll in there to pick up an onion they're out of stock. It's uncanny. That's one reason why I choose to go to other local grocery shops like Paamir Super Market. They never run out of food and all of their stuff is quality. I don't know whether it's organic or not, but you can tell that the fruits and vegetables you pick up from here are way better quality than Sainsbury's; they're brighter and they simply look more edible. The prices are generally cheaper than at huge grocery chains as well. You can get four avocadoes for a pound here and a three tonne bag of rice for a fiver. I'll trade Sainsbury's shopping for this any day.

This one is forever improving, they have…read moreincreased the number of self-service tills in the shop but not decreased the amount of staff on checkouts, alongside the staff stationed near to those self-service check outs. They used to have a independent flower stall inside but decided the space would better serve a trolley park... They have the obligatory coffee stop, which I have never used so can't comment on. They stock all you expect to see in a Sainsburys, they have recently added a petrol station onsite which is useful as no longer will you have to drive to Purley or Bell Green to redeem the vouchers you get which makes petrol slightly more affordable. The thing to be aware of with this Sainsburys is that it is shares a site with Crystal Palace FC (come on you Eagles). So on match days the store closes early as the car park is over run with cars from supporters from both sides, they will generally close an hour or so before kick off and open back a similar time after it. They have also installed a time limit on using the car park, it's an automated system which reads you license plate as you drive in and tells you how long you can stay for free. I have no idea what happens if you stay over this...apart from some kind of fine I guess. Also on a Sunday be aware that whilst they open at 10am you cannot purchase anything before 11am.

Waitrose's Central Croydon branch can have a gold star. Well done chaps, you're the best…read moresupermarket in the area. This isn't a full size Waitrose, it has a limited range due to its small, urban site but you can buy the ingredients to make dinner from scratch, including seasonings and spices and that absolutely has to count for something. So while it sounds like I am somewhat damning it with faint praise, as the runners and riders are more like a donkey derby than the Epsom Derby, it only looks bad in comparison with other bigger branches, rather than the nearby Sainsbury's and Tesco. They also have a sandwich counter for lunchtimes and a full range of lunchtime sandwiches. Conceivably, you could do a full weekly shop here but it is a victim of its own success, as queues at the checkouts can be long and frustrating at peak times.

You can tell that it's posher than a regular cafe, because they put tomato and rocket on the sausage and bacon sandwiches. When I was growing up, the only rocket I'd heard of took people to the moon! It's not just the sausage butties that are posh, there is a good selection of pork pies, scotch eggs and sandwiches. And the cakes! Wow, the cakes are great. There are the usual suspects; carrot cake and red velvet, some amazing caramel shortbread and there are even some gluten-free treats. There are two reasons this little hidden gem doesn't get 5 stars. Firstly, it's not always the speediest service. This can be quite an issue if you are trying to grab breakfast before running for a train. Like with a lot of places, It's particularly bad when it's busy. The second reason it's only 4 stars is the price. I know, you get what you pay for, and I do like it's aspirational middle-class elite-ness. But I picked up a sausage and bacon sandwich, an iced tea, some 'breakfast pudding' (wonderful squidgy caramel shortbread), and an extra sandwich for later (whatever, I'm a big guy) and it cost me over a tenner! I guess the main problem I have is my champagne taste, but lime & soda budget.
