One of the most missed parks in the Baytown area. This park does not exist in the eyes of the…read moremajority. A city that abandoned a hospital and medical plaza leaves the trace of this park. It sits behind the old Methodist hospital and San Jacinto plaza. The land is very wide and spacious. The parking lot of the hospital combines with the park. With little to no groundwork. The pavement of the hospital's concrete is almost unbearable to drive across due the excess amounts of potholes lurking. People flee across the parking lot to make it to work or drop their kids off at the only nearby establishment 'still in business'. A daycare which is proximal to the park. A pleasantly wooden pier lies along the trails which leads out to the brackish waters. A flow of fish repeatedly hop from wave to wave. I reckon there's alligator gar in this briny Adam's ale besides catfish, seatrout, and blue crab. The graffiti-tized or should I say vandalized tables of the pier. Gives to the expression "express yourself". Artistically drawn and tagged of relationships, shout-outs, and lifestyles. Don't forget your sharpie or blade... if you dare. The kind of run-of-mill hang out or fishing spot without encountering a whole lot of people.

Not friendly at all and couldn't tell me why he wouldn't sell me and my family of 4 bracelets to get on the pier. It was Saturday about 7:15 pm and all he said was.. "we're closing soon" then turned his back on me. I muttered "the sign says all night fishing on Fri-Sat, so what time does the pier close?" The pools were not clear and the pools are honestly 1990 pools. The water splash pad was not on and the seating was faded. The street signs are peeling and need to be updated especially on the important roads that lead to the properties and amenities. Its like no one updates or up keeps the pools or any amenities. There was bee hives on the playgrounds old decking. Looks like the buyers who purchased in 2017 had better times there cause as of now theres nothing to do did I mention the roads are very bumpy.

Unfortunately the small docks that originally were installed for boaters were washed away in floods (or so I was told) but it is still a good place to start boating. Also, unfortunately this park has the same problem that so many others have in the area: unconscionable people who litter and don't take care of the porta-potties. Wish these people would either become responsible for their own actions or just stay away.

My only experience with the town was driving past it on the way to somewhere else prettier and holding my nose for as long as possible to avoid breathing in the odors of that industry. A few decades later and perhaps that reputation is still applicable, but there is also plenty for an avid outdoors person & environmentalist to enjoy here. Case in point, Big Island Slough (BIS). What the heck is a slough? Well, according to hydrology experts it's a "wetland, usually a swamp or shallow lake, often a backwater to a larger body of water; water tends to be stagnant or may flow slowly on a seasonal basis." And according to birders, fisherman, canoers, and kayak enthusiasts, BIS is a great place to enjoy that type of environment while just blocks away from the hustle of the Houston metro area. At this free public recreation area off Red Bluff Road (just north of the Kipper Mease softball fields), you can park your car and have a creekside picnic, or maybe go fishing off the banks or piers. You can also follow the gravel trails into the wooded areas to the bird blinds to see some of the 220 bird species who make their home in or pass through the Armand Bayou watershed (of which BIS is a part) http://www.h-gac.com/community/water/watershed_protection/armand-bayou.aspx . Finally, you can put in your kayak or canoe and go for an epic paddling trip that may encounter, among other living things, alligators up to 10 feet in length. I looked everywhere on the interwebs and could not come up with any government agency taking responsibility for maintaining the BIS Activity Center (aka Recreation Area aka Park), but it seems that it was funded with the very same grants that built the Armand Bayou Hike & Bike Trail http://www.yelp.com/biz/armand-bayou-hike-and-bike-trail-pasadena-2 , so that made me think the City of Pasadena is in charge. Sure enough, they have budget line items for maintenance of this facility since 2009 (just call me Nellie Bly). There are gates to both of the parking lots on Red Bluff, and there are reports online that they do get locked at dark each night, so make sure you read the signs near the porto-johns and get back to your car in time to exit. You can also try calling the City Parks Department at 713-475-7048 for more information (since their website is less than informative).
