I was so glad that Logan Automotive was able to get me in two days later. Even before I called to make an appointment, they impressed me with how fast they replied to my message when I inquired about whether they gave shuttle rides to and from my work. I didn't have to wait long before they replied back that they did have a shuttle service if I lived or worked in Des Moines. I dropped off my car in the morning and they gave me a loaner car to drive to work because the owner's daughter wasn't there yet to give me a ride. I was really surprised that they did that for a small shop like theirs. Bruce called me not too long after I dropped my car off and told me what the problem was and how much it would cost. I'm sure it would have cost much more if I had brought it to Ramsey. He fixed my car early in the afternoon and told me it was ready to pick up. When I went to pick up my car, Bruce showed me the broken and rusty part that he replaced. I was impressed by that. He was completely honest and transparent about everything; not to mention super friendly and nice. He also rotated my tires and didn't charge me for it. I asked him about which cars are the best to buy (because I'm so done with my Subaru and this will be my last one) and he said he couldn't tell me that because each brand has good and bad models. He told me if I'm ever looking at cars, I could call him and tell him the year and model and he would tell me if it's worth buying or passing on it. I really liked and appreciated that. I'm so glad I found a repair place close to work that does a great job and doesn't charge dealership prices. It's small and family-owned and they don't treat you like a number. Right off the bat, Joe stands out from the stereotypical "rude, crude, straight-to-the-point" mechanic image people might have. He has great manners and a soft, welcoming attitude. You can tell he's ready to actually listen to your concerns -- and not just listen, but address them. He's patient, thorough, and willing to have a real discussion with you about what's going on. A lot of mechanics lose people from the beginning simply because they don't listen. Joe does, and that already says a lot about how knowledgeable he is. But his wisdom doesn't stop there -- he also knows when he needs to learn more. And honestly, how can someone not be smart when they're always curious and willing to keep learning? That curiosity really showed when he was working on my 1991 Bronco -- a car that's before both his time and my time. He wasn't afraid to call in a former Ford mechanic to ask questions and get support. Together, they turned that Bronco from "this thing might fall apart on the road any minute" into something close to its prime again. And I didn't have a single problem with it throughout the absolutely merciless Iowa winter. So yes -- you can rest assured that whatever car you bring in, they'll do their best to take care of it... even the ones that were around before they were born And it's not just curiosity -- it's passion. I still remember Joe saying to me: "It doesn't matter what it is. I will fix it." As someone pursuing a medical degree, I was genuinely inspired by that mindset. Fix what needs to be fixed. Help those who need help. I'm taking that energy into how I want to treat my future patients -- and you really can't go wrong with that attitude. We recently purchased a van and had a Used Vehicle Inspection performed by Midas. The Midas estimate came out to about $2,500 in repairs. Before I told them to go ahead with the repairs, I remembered something. A year ago, I was checking out potential daycares for my newborn and I met a woman named Kim. I ended up getting an in-home nanny so I didn't need Kim's daycare services, but she had told me that her husband was a mechanic and encouraged me to contact her if I ever needed any work done. I remembered this brief interaction I had with Kim a year later and as I was standing in Midas, I texted her. She immediately responded with her Husband, Nate's, information. I asked Nate if he would be willing to look over the Midas estimate and give me his thoughts. He promptly responded and I emailed him the estimate. After looking it over, he let me know that he was certain we could get all of that work done for well under $2,500 and he gave me the address to this shop. I brought the van into the shop on Monday morning and that's where I met owner Joe Frazier. Now, let me be honest. I have a cushy job, I work from home by day and I take bubble baths and drink wine by night. I still cringe when I have to go into dairy barns for work. I am not "at home" in any auto shop and this one is a far cry from the corporate feel of the Midas I'm used to. There is no sign outside, and inside is filled with concrete, oil, smoke and a cute dog named Scarlett. I was a little nervous on my first trip in. Especially since Joe was sitting at his desk with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, totally looking like Carface Carruthers (the bad dog from the movie All Dogs Go to Heaven). All of the above being said, the aesthetic of the place sort of put me at ease. I could get behind the logic of no fancy waiting room equals not going to charge me $2,500 for $400 worth of parts. And that's exactly what happened--I saved a ton of money. While my car was there, Nate kept me updated via text (which I really appreciate because I'm busy and texting allows me to continue multi-tasking vs. having to stop for a phone call every question I have). I came in to pick up the van on Wednesday and Joe was wonderful about carefully explaining everything to me. He let me know that one of the repairs that Midas quoted didn't even need to be made--the part wasn't even leaking. He wrote down everything that he did and explained why. He didn't treat me like I was incapable of understanding mechanics or try to gloss over anything (which I've experienced in the past). He was just straightforward and patient. In the end, that $2,500 estimate from Midas cost me around $700 and I didn't have to sacrifice good communication or anything. I had to pet a cute dog for like 5 minutes in a dirty shop--totally worth it. After Joe checked me out, a mechanic brought out my keys and he was the friendliest, scariest looking man covered in dirt and oil that I've ever met. All of the warning lights were off in my van. It felt like it was driving a million times better. I'm super pleased. We have a mandatory inspection scheduled next week for ride-share, so I guess we'll be for certain that all of the repairs were made. I'm not oblivious to the potential scam behind the great deal I got, but I really doubt that's the case here. Everything felt legit. The Handy Helper has us for life now. Again, repairs went well at a fair price and no surprises so when my daughter's '99 Dodge Stratus needed repair I didn't hesitate to go to AA. The reason I give this shop a 5 star rating is because I had no idea what was wrong with my daughter's car when I brought it in. It was just not running right at all. Something was wrong. Period. I dropped it off and just said to Tom, "Fix it and call me when it's done." That shop could have told me anything and charged me a bundle and I wouldn't have known. But, instead, and here comes the 5 star rating, they did not charge me $90 to "find the problem" (like larger shops always do). They discovered the problem was minor and they fixed it and my bill was very, very low. Finding a mechanic you can trust to fix what's wrong and nothing more is a valuable thing indeed. I trust Tom and the team at Anything Automotive and highly recommend them as a good place to take your car.

I've given AA so many chances to make things right and sadly, it's costed me lots of money. I feel like a sucker. We had our car in for oil leaks that were costly repairs only for the oil to leak faster than before. We gave them 4 opportunities (and lots of money) only for it to never get fixed. We had our car in for coolant repairs only for the coolant to leak faster, making the issue worse. They left a damaged belt pulley under the hood after forgetting to toss it away and they damaged the battery connector, replacing it with some random spare parts that actually ended up shorting the battery. (I replaced the part myself for $5! Why could they not eat $5 for a mistake they made?) I think some of these guys are knowledgeable, but their accidents and errors are a result in poor organization, planning and process. Hopefully they can figure that out before it's too late for them. I do wish them the best, but can't recommend them.
