The Garden Shoppe - The Garden Shoppe -- fall bling!

    The Garden Shoppe

This is to review Garden Shoppe's seasonal produce. (We have yet to experience the plant nursery…read moreitems.) We'd seen this place many times when stopping at Braxton's for pet food. Finally tried them for veggies the other day and we were really pleased. We normally get non-organic produce from Gentile's in Newtown Sq if/when it's decent quality (prices can't be beat, but quality is sometimes lacking), or we trek to Wolff's in Media for better quality (which you pay for there). What made the Garden Shoppe helpful to us is its convenience to the nearby Acme and Rite Aid we use, and the quality we got for the price. Quality can sometimes be on par with Wolff's, but with lower prices than Wolff's. They did not have the selection of the Wolff's or other larger produce stores, so expect what one might find at a roadside produce stand, not a full market. But for basics, they filled our need very well. One complaint was the corn. Places like Wolff's will normally let you husk it there, and if you get a half-brown dud, you don't end up paying for it. Wolff's has a lot of pride and does not want to sell you something like that. At the Garden Shoppe there is no means of husking, and we have ended up with 40% of our ears in really bad shape (half the kernels missing, worms, rot, etc.), so if they could set up a husking station it would be a great relief. For the other items, though, we're glad we finally tried them, and are sorry we didn't do it years sooner.

I feel comfortable sitting outdoors away from a glance over the fence during the day. My husband and I can enjoy our outdoor space now as our 2nd family room with the lights. While it has been cool start to Spring, I am planning on setting up our solo firepit stove, under the ambience of the party lights strung above and surrounded by low voltage lights to provide safety and illumination without the airport runway feel. Who knows we may even get to roast marsh mellows with a glass of wine. All in the comfort of our own space where Doyle and McDonnell, Inc, designer and crew screened off our backyard from neighbors. I knew our yard was missing something but I couldn't put my finger on it. I look forward to our next project and I know who we are going to call. Thank you - Paula

Doyle & McDonnell is a remarkable landscape company - high quality, and ethical. In 2012 we…read morecompleted a large landscape project which included dozens of trees, shrubs and plants. D & M was the middle bidder on the job and I am very glad we engaged them. They provided superior quality plants, often a bit larger than specified by the landscape architect. Their installation crew was professional and the company's after care was exceptional. We planted some additional trees with them in 2013, and when the last two winters proved very harsh, Doyle & McDonnell was more than fair in helping us with replacements. I recommend them without hesitation. They also did a great job with our outdoor lighting.

First I'll start with the positive.  I can tell the owner is really passionite about trees and the…read moreprices are very reasonable.  However I must now list my constructive criticism.  Before we even received our trees, delivery was over a week past estimated delivery date.  I had to email him to remind the company about my order.  I know times are crazy with covid but when you buy something and are told a delivery window a week late seems atypical (red flag #1).  We received the 5 trees we ordered, 4 of of which were hornbeams.   We already have 3 established ones in our yard and have never had a problem growing them.  The trees were very tall, but wilted when delivered and had a very small tree bulb, the container was the size of a basketball (red flag #2).  When we planted the trees we noticed the roots were not the most mature, and the taproot was small, but we still planted them.  After less than 1 week we were noticing one tree had all of its leaves turn brown, after 3 weeks the other tree started to turn and in 4 weeks we had 2 dead hornbeams .  At this point I emailed the owner and asked him what his business could do for us.  I have bought many trees and shrubs over the years at many nurseries and the most reputable ones in the area like Terrain and Mostadis have a warranty with their goods.  However I know this buisnees says on its website that the customer is soley responsible.  I find this to be very disheartening because 2 of our trees were never in the best shape when received and were planted and cared for well. I should have spoke up upon delivery but I never thought they would die and not be revivable.  After I emailed him the first time I heard no response for 1 week.  After a nudge email he informed me he was so busy and would email me "soon once his internet service is restored".  After another week I them sent him another email, and still yet to hear anything (red flag #3).    So this leaves me here, writing a negative review that I never wanted to have to give and out $300 in dead hornbeams.  Again I know these are not normal times with covid and I was giving this buisnees every benefit of the doubt, but their customer service is severely lacking.  As for my review I am being generous with 2 stars, 2 of 5 trees died and their customer service needs an overhaul.
