Owen is brilliant when it comes to knowing about plants! He recently designed the landscape for a…read morehouse that I was going to be listing for sale. The landscape that he designed for this property was not only beautiful, it was sustainable too. The house sold within the first few days of it being on the market, and a big part of that was because of the landscaping. First impression is critical when selling a house. And this house had great curb appeal thanks to Owen's work. But he doesn't just make it look good, he makes it functional, sustainable, and easy to maintain too. Plus he is fun to work with. :)

Owen Dell has completely changed my perspective on landscaping. I'm a much more informed homeowner…read moreof sustainable landscape practices because of his videos, book, and consultation. I used Owen's consulting service while he was in my area for a presentation. Although it was a rainy day, Owen stood with us in various parts of our front and back yards to help us better understand the attributes of each area. He suggested we revisit our proposed hardscape. It made a huge difference in the aesthetics and function of our backyard. Beyond the consultation, Owen continued to patiently and thoroughly answer our follow up questions. As a result, visitors are always impressed with our completely new landscaped yards and the implementation of sustainable practices. It makes us feel good knowing we are using far less water, producing minimal green waste, not using any toxic chemicals, providing nectar-rich blooms, and significantly reducing storm water runoff. Having met Owen, I can say he truly cares about the greater good through sustainable landscape practices. His depth of experience and knowledge of landscaping, plants, and sustainable practices makes him a valuable consultant and landscape architect. All too often, uninformed gardeners are installing wasteful irrigation systems, plants that are inappropriate for an area, and landscapes that do not enhance the activities or enjoyment of the homeowner. Whereas, Owen Dell partners with the homeowner to create the most optimum landscape environment that is good for the homeowner and our planet.

These guys were great! we hired them to replace our roof and well house and they did a great job!…read moreeven after discovering additional work needed to be done they got the job done, everything fixed or replaced, and in before the rain really came back!

My experience with Combat Construction started out promising but ended up quite frustrating…read more Jesse, the owner, seemed very friendly and gave me a really reasonable bid for a new fence and short retaining wall. When they put the fence in, it looked great with the exception of one 8' section that was not even with the rest (it sat 3-4" higher than the adjacent sections with a 3-4" gap below). I asked Jesse why this had been done and ended up asking for it to be fixed, which really seemed to annoy him. There were a couple of other inconsistencies with what Jesse said he was going to do and what he actually ended up doing. For example, he had said that there would be a 9.5" grass board along the bottom of the fence, but he used a 6" one instead. He also told me that they would be applying a clear coat sealant on the fence and instead he put on a "cedar" color stain. When I asked him about the color, he also seemed to get perturbed. The fence ended up looking great, so I didn't mind that he used a stain, I just didn't understand why he specifically told me he was going to use a clear coat and then used a colored stain. I was also lucky that my neighbors, who were sharing the cost, didn't mind the changes. They then tried to install my retaining wall directly on the dirt/mud in my yard with a corrugated pipe sitting on the dirt behind it. When I told Jesse that I thought that the wall needed to be installed on a compacted rock base to be even and avoid settling and that the French drain would need to sit in rock or have a water barrier between it and the wall to function correctly, he became very upset and told me that "this job was becoming a real hassle." He argued that he had bid for a decorative retaining wall only (not what I had asked for) and that he was already losing money on my project. I found this to be really odd since he was the one that had written the bid. There was no way I was going to pay them to install the wall and French drain incorrectly, so after a heated argument, I ended up telling Jesse I would pay for the materials that they had already had delivered to my home and put the retaining wall and drain in myself. There were a couple of other sloppy workmanship issues I noticed once they had finished. They used a sprayer to apply the stain to the fence and ended up spraying onto my house siding. They didn't replace the corner posts at the back of my property, so there are still old, rotten posts holding up the new fence at the corners. They also left quite a mess when hauling away the old fence, including dropping nails in my driveway and my neighbor's. A few of the boards they installed have since warped or split, causing two so far to detach after only a little over a month. Combat Construction offers a warranty on the fence, but I have opted to fix the problems myself rather than deal with Jesse again. It was really disappointing that they were trying to cut corners on my project and that Jesse apparently felt it was unreasonable for me to question him. The crew doing the work for Jesse were really friendly and professional and the fence ended up looking fantastic for the most part. Based on the deviations between what was communicated to me and what was actually done, as well as Jesse's attitude when asked to do the work correctly, I would not hire them again or recommend them to anyone else.
