Of course I also researched the surgeon, one very capable fellow named Dr. Edwards who has an impressive training and experience record. Yes, I have trust issues. He was just the right combination of confidence, respectful bedside manner, and efficacy that made me feel silly when it was over and done with in the blink of an eye. For procedures like this, do not look at the needles, but do be aware of how far away (in surgeon's distances) important nerves are from said needles. The current imaging technology that allows for well guided needle insertion also makes these extremely low risk routine procedures. I'm still talking to myself here. The clinic is clean, the staff is very good, I especially appreciate being treated as if I'm not old and confused when I do provide some evidence that this might be the case. I do not see the need for the physician's assistant, seemed a superfluous extra cost layer but that's American Healthcare. The only complaint I have is a pretty serious one, it's very hard to get in for an appointment in the first place. I was referred 6 weeks before the procedure by my Ascension nurse practitioner (excellent btw, NPs are a better choice for primary care) but I had to call myself. The first four calls didn't get me through a completely non-medical screening agent who was only interested in my financial situation. But also they were all quite incompetent, they could not ascertain, verify that I have Medicare plus supplemental. I do, but since they couldn't substantiate this, they wouldn't make an appointment. I was in considerable discomfort which is why I was persistent, but they clearly do not care about patient pain or health at the entry level. I had to make an appointment with another orthopedic surgeon (another 3 phone calls) who works with Dr. Edwards at another clinic and get referred back to Edwards. All of these phone calls of course have to be while I'm supposed to be working. Then, once scheduled, the surgical clinic has to call and talk to me in person, again while I'm at work and not allowed to take phone calls. It's like the clinic, indeed much of the American healthcare delivery system is stuck in the 20th century for communications technology. Heck, I'm an old man and I learned how to use Google Calendar, Internet messaging, e-mail, and SMS. I know it's possible, my nurse practitioner and her office, and dentist as well can use all of these so communication is quite easy. The getting in part was so unpleasant and inconvenient this might have been a two star review in spite of how adept Dr. Edwards is if it weren't for a single act of respect from the front desk person (I won't name her in case she wasn't supposed to do this) who agreed that the office needs to catch up and move on from late 1900s phone tag. Or maybe I should find my telephone answering machine and hook it back up.

It was the getting to that part that was not the most pleasant experience. It was not a very personable experience. The clinic carries a revolving door atmosphere. Get you in, get you out. Except that you wait, and wait, to actually be seen by anyone, even with an appointment. I know it's a great thing for the neighborhood, and they do lots of free walk-in stuff, so those are good things. Meh. Just not feeling it.

They are completely unlike my last doctor who threw pills at me and charged me way over cost for drug tests at every visit. I am more than an insurance claim or dollar signs, they seem to give a damn. They listen and have used so many tools to get me more comfortable. I have been sent to a wonderful physical therapist who gave me exercises to stretch and strengthen. On occasion I have had epidural injections in their office, or at another location. When I get a flair up they do trigger point injections to help me get off my couch and into work. When my insurance decides to be jerks and denies medication or requires prior authorization for something I've already been taking, they hop on the phone and take care of it. Plus, she came highly recommended by my friend who recently had a baby of her own! I've always been a fan of seeing a chiropractor as it's seemed to benefit me with alignment in some way each time. What Dr Hannah is helping me with is really to support my prenatal health in many ways. I see her ever-other week and she's explained that over the remaining 5.5 months of my pregnancy she'll address neuro-biomechanical tension of the uterus and pelvis in order to support optimal positioning, growth, and development of my baby, helping to decrease labor time and result in fewer interventions. Pretty cool if you ask me! She has also explained how these visits can help with pain and discomfort, nausea, reflux, indigestion, and a few other not-so fun symptoms that come along with pregnancy. I really appreciate the comfortable environment Dr Hannah has created within her practice. Not only is she really knowledgeable, approachable, and friendly, the space itself is super inviting. What I love is the wait times are very low, I see the doctor shortly after I arrive. They are very personable, take time to answer my questions and are great at giving me different options. If I don't want to try medication they always say the best things to try at home or over the counter and if they don't work then come back and they will work with me and finding the right prescription. My daughter also goes to Dr. J as the office is a family practice - him and his staff are very nice and accommodating. Definitely recommend!
