Carne asada tacos and shredded chicken tacos
Alice W.

Service was quite slow (they had signs asking for patience as they were understaffed). Food felt pricey as well for the quality. The owner / manager was very friendly though.

Fish Tacos

My wife and I returned for lunch yesterday to "Tequilas" or "Alebrije Mexican Restaurant & Bar". There were about 5 others in the restaurant. We ordered a 'happy hour' margarita that was about 70% ice and tasted weak. My wife had the chicken enchiladas. They were cold and hard, but they had okay flavor. I ordered the fish tacos. My three tacos together had about 1 ounce of fish. They had fresh toppings and salsa and decent flavor, but the value just wasn't there. Sadly, it seems that this restaurant prepares food ahead of time and it's not always hot upon delivery. The $6 chips and salsa were good (well, the green salsa was good, the chips just average to below average). Their fajitas aren't even sizzling according to the menu. I guess they're not counting on repeat customers. We won't be returning.

If you eat here, you will have PTSD from having bad food and no amount of therapy will make you want to eat Mexican food again! The cook needs a severe shouting from Gordon Ramsay. Maybe then he/ she would realize they are not cut out to be in the kitchen. I'm surprised this has five star reviews. Do these people who give such a restaurant five stars lack taste buds?! I wish I hadn't read those 5 star reviews that made me spend on such lousy food! Poblano chicken was boiled chicken with poblano and tasteless. Guacamole lacked salt and tortilla chips were so hard, Asada fajitas was Bland . No flavor. Hospital food for the recovering patient. Our meal was $100 plus- what a rip off for such bad food!

Kids chicken quesadilla. $15, overpriced, tiny, horrible
Ashley C.

Ordered a kids chicken quesadilla to go. It was extremely overpriced for $15. I thought it was going to be a typical serving for that price. It was tiny, very little chicken, and tasted horrible. See the photo of the inside for yourself. I rarely give one star reviews but serving a customer this is just embarrassing. I wish we could get a refund. 0/5

Soyrizo tacos

Love the soyrizo tacos and guacamole molcajete at happy hour and their habanero margarita here. Highlight is the salsas- the salsa roja and salsa verde are both so full of flavor, I was eating them by the spoonful! Service is super friendly too. Best place to pop in for a mid afternoon snack.

Kids menu. Don't order the nacho.

The burrito was the only good thing. Others were average. We ordered a pozole, burrito, enchilada and kids nachos. Service, very slow. A few items were not available. The kids menu was updated. Adding the picture for that.

We are vegetarians and really enjoy spicy food. On big island, we really missed the flavorful spicy food and TEQUILAS restaurant really surpassed our expectations when we asked them for making it spicy ! If on big island, this place is a must ! Food is delicious, fresh and tasty for all different spice levels - mild(for kids, my little one enjoyed their beans and rice and cheese quesadillas), medium - just right and spicy- their side salsas added this to our taste buds ! Very kind owner and smiling staff. Ambiance is just perfect for us adults and for my kid too. MUST TRY ! This is a live review :D I am that grateful for this food and happy we had our dinner here tonight !

NOW CALLED Tequilas: The ambiance is quiet when few people are there, but it is rather small and would get loud quickly if they were busy. The service was friendly but seemed like they could be overwhelmed if more than 5 tables were filled. The food, it's just ok honestly. Being from a southern mainland state, we have lots of Mexican places to eat at and this place was honestly bottom tier compared to those but I understand this is a different place. The food tasted fresh, but none of it was really worth the price in our opinion. It's not a bad spot, just other better places to eat.

Steak burrito bowl

We visited for a late lunch and my husband wanted tacos, after a disappointing experience at the hotel the day prior. The restaurant was slow. We were the only guests before a large party arrived. We came bc of a post a couple of weeks prior of a salad. When we inquired about it the management seemed puzzled and said they didn't offer it. I ordered a pink guava margarita. It was super potent. The burrito bowl was good but the portion was tiny. The kids had a quesadilla kids meal. It came with three small quesadillas made with a corn tortilla. It wasn't what they were used to. We asked for salsa with our tacos but didn't realize it was an additional $4 charge. We were shocked to discover our total for tacos, and bowl, two kids meals, and a margarita was more than $120. It was okay. Probably a one and done experience.

The food was very flavorful. I had the Asada burrito and my friend had the asada bowl. The drinks were really good too! So many tequilas! The service was top tier. Very friendly. We will be back. Only thing is we would have loved some chips and salads on the table while we waited for food like at home. It was only one other table during happy hour. Good music, clean space, recommend.

$4 EACH for these "large," salsas

We had a prime table right on the end of the sand. It had an amazing view, and the sunset is fantastic here. You will see a bunch of people taking photos. The live music was a great touch, though you won't be able to hear it if you are seated on the other side. In terms of food, we were generally happy. The kids enjoyed the parmesan garlic bread and edamame. My favorite dish was actually a salad called Spinugula. It was huge, and a great mix of arugula, spinach, gorgonzola cheese, strawberries, and candied macadamia nuts. My wife had the coconut crusted tofu, and said it was solid. I had the ahi poke nachos, and they were disappointing. They just didn't wow me like I thought they would. Dessert was good- we had the Kona coffee cheesecake. The beer menu is also impressive with a ton of local draft options. They also have TVs at the bar, so this would be a good place to catch a game. And the waiting grass area out front has a ton of fun games for kids.

We were seated promptly upon arrival at our reservation time. The hostess was super friendly and chatty. The food was so wonderful. There were 5 different entrees among the 6 of us and no one had a single complaint. The seating on the beach and the spectacular sunset view is unmatched. There is nothing like seeing sea turtles on the water from your table. Everyone was casually leaving their seats to go next to the water, taking photos, enjoying the scenery. It was a really cool vibe. When the sun peeked through the clouds at sunset almost everyone got up from their seats to take photos and enjoy the moment. It was beautiful and peaceful. The live music with a dancer topped the ambiance off in a way that I find difficult to describe. I'd like me you read the negative reviews and wonder if you should check it out please do yourself a favor and GO! The food, service, and views are hands down the best we've had after 8 days in Hawaii.

Pro Tip: Enjoy a Luxury Resort Without Staying There…read more Here's a little Big Island travel hack... You don't have to be a guest at the five-star Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection to soak up its incredible atmosphere. Simply tell the valet you're dining at Surf Shack, enjoy a bite, a drink--or both--and they'll validate your parking. The complimentary valet alone feels like a win. The resort is consistently recognized as one of the Big Island's premier luxury destinations. Once you've eaten, take your time exploring the property. Stroll the beautifully landscaped grounds, relax in the open-air lounges, wander the shoreline, watch the waves roll in, browse the upscale shops, and enjoy one of the most peaceful resort settings on the Kohala Coast. The ambiance is worth the visit all by itself. As for Surf Shack, the setting is fantastic. The food? Good, but definitely priced with a luxury resort zip code. We enjoyed our meal, but you'll likely pay a premium for what you order. So here's the hack: Pay for lunch... get the resort experience for free. Between the validated valet parking, stunning grounds, oceanfront setting, and laid-back luxury vibe, it's one of the best values on the Big Island if you know the secret. Just don't tell too many people.

Kabob was our main with hummus for the appetizers. We ended up not ordering enough for the main because I think when I'm sitting down you can't tell I'm 6'8" 220lbs and they advertise their meals as shareable. If you eat a lot, the kabobs aren't shareable. Pay attention at the desert layout; we decided to go with the unhealthy route which was to top off with some sweets instead of ordering more mains . The frozen milk cake for me was it even though they pushed the pavolova as the one. The smores is pretty average tasting s'mores but definitely a luxury version so I'd never say don't get it, I'd just say it's obtainable elseware if you're trying to decide on a space you might not visit again. She handled everything with a genuine Aloha spirit, a great attitude, and a smile. She is a tremendous asset to the restaurant. If I were the owner, I'd be looking at giving her a raise and putting her in a leadership or management role. She clearly has the ability to increase efficiency and bring out the best in a team. The kalbi was probably the highlight of the meal--the portion was very generous and there was plenty of meat. The macaroni salad though, could definitely use some improvement. The macaroni salad wasn't very good, and both the rice and macaroni salad portions were about the size of a small ice cream scoop. For a plate like this, I definitely think they could be more generous with the rice. Our server was nice, but not very attentive, so the service was just okay.
