I called a few months ago to share my positive experience with Melvin and his crew but wanted to post here as well. We live in a condo complex in DC and are grateful for the work Melvin and his crew do for us several times a week. The work itself is timely, efficient, and clean. The main reason I am sharing my experience is because of Melvin himself. He is always positive, happy, and he remembers the names (including dog names) of many members of our community. This company has LITERALLY made life at our condominium worse: they are deceptive and will not adhere to any contractual terms. We have been burdened by dumpsters they refused to pickup upon termination of our contract - FOR ALMOST THREE MONTHS NOW!! Adding insult to injury: they took two and left the third behind!! UNREAL. They are beyond DISGUSTING and unprofessional - no less deceptive operating under "Republic Waste" yet all containers and trucks are still identified with the Tenleytown logo. If you are considering Tenleytown Trash (now Republic Services) DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY! This company was horrible BEFORE they were bought and now they are 10 times worse. Before, they would regularly leave the lids either open or off and on the ground, the gate would be left open and they would miss days. NOW, we have all of that AND they only come once a week when we are supposed to have pick up on Mondays, Thursdays and recycle services on Wednesdays. This does NOT happen. They'll give you a credit, yes, but NOTHING changes. I live in a building with 4 units and trash needs to be picked up more regularly. I haven't found a company yet to replace them, but when I do, they are history. read more

Tried calling and emailing and every time we receive almost no response. Unreliable, we pay for two pickups per week and have requested extra bins for our unit... With no result. We have requested two pickups and this is what the alley behind our unit looks like. Because the trash gets so bad, even neighbors start to leave trash nearby because it's so visibly neglected. Further, we pay for separate recycling services and I've seen a recycling bin get dumped in with the trash into the truck. We've reached out about this with no response either. Terrible customer service and they routinely miss pick-ups for a month at a time. Employees and managers are rude and will hang up on you rather than help. What really boggles my mind is that I was told the same driver handles our trash and recycling and yet the trash does get picked up but the recycling does not. Our recycling is currently stacked up so high behind our building that residents are keeping stuff in their apartments rather than putting it outside because there's no space. read more

We have to call multiple times a week and BEG them to pick up our trash. Even worse - they promised they would pickup by 6pm today - and of course they didn't show. Trash is now attracting rodents. I have to call several times every week to beg them to pick up our trash and recycling at our condo building. We pay them to pick up our recycling and trash. No matter how many times I've talked with management and the workers, made sure they had our gate key, and called to give reminders about our pick up days, they still do not reliably pick up the trash or recycling. I've never spoken to ruder customer service associates in my life. They constantly miss pickups, say a manager is going to call you (which they never do), and make it feel like you're the one in the wrong with their constant mistakes and mishaps. Unfortunately we use them for our small condo building. They used to be so good until they were acquired by Republic - a big national chain. Now they miss pickups regularly, their customer service is rude and unprofessional and when they promise to make-good on missed pickups they never do. Their employees take little care with the trash & recycling when they empty the totes and as result we constantly have trash and in particular glass shards strewn about in our alley. Tenley insisted on giving us 6 trash totes & 2 recycling, even though we told them we have a lot of recycling AND trash is picked up more frequently. It took 3 separate phone calls and several months to get to a 5 to 3 ratio and finally to 4 trash & 4 recycling. One of the "new" recycling cans was half the size of the others, and the 2nd one had a broken wheel & a big crack on the side that let smaller things fall out. Then the people who pick up the trash didn't pay any attention and started leaving our hard-fought additional recycling cans at other buildings on our street. The communication is terrible, the service is terrible. We're so glad to be ending our contract with them this month, and hopeful for the new people. read more

They just knocked more bricks off the side of my building because they insist on backing their garbage truck down an alley that is far too narrow to accommodate such a large truck. We have asked them not to back up the seventy five feet and walk the cans down the alley. They have refused. read more

I love to support local companies and you can't get much more local than Tenleytown Trash! With political statements on their truck about DC voting rights, and lines from the founder's favorite movies, kitsch and trash go together very well. The guys that pick up the trash are always great, on time, neat, and quiet. I've also used the company for bulk pick up and they have been affordable and efficient with that as well. I think the best part about Tenleytown is that they actually pick up your call if you call and you can talk to a real person. read more

These guys collect the garbage for my building. They always leave the bins strewn about the parking spaces and sometimes there is trash around on the ground when they leave. I am tired of having to pick up after them just so I can park my car. read more

This was really so upsetting and unpleasant. They show up with the truck one quarter full already with debris --making it more difficult for you to gauge the cost. He told me that a full load was $400.00. What i had for him would barely be one quarter of a fill. But he started to try to say it would fill the truck. This was ridiculous (I had about 8 boxes, a small Little Tikes picnic table, a small pile of broken drywall and a small pile sticks) and I balked and he said Ok $175.00. As though he was doing me a favor. Then he did not clear the area completely and I went to check it and he was REALLY HOSTILE AND LOUD. I was alone in my home and this guy was abusive and rude. I gave him his check and walked away from they guy. The other workers with him were very, very nice. It is a supposedly a neighborhood business. I can't fathom why they would have this insulting, scary in your face guy leading any of their teams. I've lived in this neighborhood for years and never felt so threatened. I feel really uneasy that this guy was tromping through my garage, practically yelling about how he wasn't there "to do my work for me", etc. Suddenly he starts saying it really is a $250.00 job and he just did me a big favor. I closed the gate and locked it but was just shaking. It was just really upsetting. Our condo building has been using Tenleytown trash for over 4 years. We had absolute no issues with them... until about 3.. maybe 5 months ago. There were one or two times where I noticed that trash had been removed from the bins and placed next to the bins but they weren't removed. Anyway, it seems that things have gotten progressively worse in the last 5 months to the point that it doesn't seem like they pick up the trash anymore. Our bins are always full. I've been dealing with the Front Office for the last few months. They have been responsive and they claim they call the driver/supervisor, but there was at least one instance where the driver/supervisor swore up and down that the trash had gotten picked up when it wasn't. I ended up having to take a picture to send to the Front Office. That was over a month ago, and I've noticed that I've still had to call them twice, and I traveled a bit this month. I'm guessing they haven't been picking up the trash at all. I'm wondering if they have a monopoly on private trash removal in DC because they certainly are not acting like a company that cares to keep customers. Anyways... This company picks up at our Condominium, have noticed reckless driving of their trucks previously. Today I witnessed one of their trucks illegally parked blocking an active sidewalk, into the street; this despite the truck being parked at the entrance to a driveway to a parking lot they could have easily backed into. I saw one of the men from the truck and requested they move the truck as it was blocking a sidewalk and a street. That worker and his three companions then began raining down invective and insults in response, culminating with calling me a racist (for calmly requesting they move their illegally parked truck??). Totally unprofessional, totally out of line. Our property manager heard them yelling and went up to remonstrate with them. Called the Company and reported the incident. Will be suggesting our Condo look into other trash options. This is a very unprofessional company. read more

Terrible customer service. I requested a quote. After a week I called to be "greeted" with a very unenthused individual. She then send the quote. I sent a few simple questions. Followed that email up a few days later with a request for an answer. A few more days and I sent one final email. I want to thank them for the pathetic response times as it caused me to reach out to kmG Hauling. They could not have been nicer or more prompt in their responses. We have been using Tenleytown Trash for over 3 years at our condo and have been very pleased with their service both on our property and also on the phone. We had a big TV that needed to be hauled away and no one would take it on Craigslist. We were in a bind because we didn't want to schlep it to the dump. We thought, wait, Tenleytown Trash takes our trash...maybe they do bulk pick up too. Sure enough, we called and spoke with Adrien who was lovely. It was good to actually speak to a real person after the first or second ring. She said they could come get it the next day for only $15 extra bucks. Worth it! The next day it was gone. I like them also because I think they're local. I like to support local companies, and usually think of this as stores, but think it's cool to have a trash company that is local. I also like that they have funny quotes on the trucks. Whoever owns the company seems to have a good sense of humor. read more

This morning one of their vehicles sat in the middle of the alley conducting business, rather than pulling to the side as I've seen them normally do. It created a backup of 3 cars in the alley as well as a trash truck and another car on the street. As the truck exited the alley, the man riding on the back of the truck must have been having a difficult day. He was unhappy with my slow approach to pass the truck and yelled at me using expletives. I've witnessed Tenleytown Trash not recycling, sometimes I have to call for pickup because they missed my house, and their management is non-responsive to customers. They're also pretty expensive for the poor quality of service. I'll be finding a new company asap if they don't rectify their collection guy's failure to recycle. One of their big loud orange trucks came by at 7:30am on a Saturday, making loud grinding, crunching, and engine-turning sounds. These sounds were in fact so loud that the poor truck operator must not have been able to hear his radio over the racket. So he did the natural thing, and TURNED HIS RADIO UP SO LOUD THAT IT DROWNED OUT THE SOUND OF THE BIG LOUD ORANGE TRUCK AND HE COULD HEAR IT EVEN WHEN HE GOT OUT OF THE TRUCK AND LOADED UP THE TRASH. The sound of the radio in our house was louder than the volume we would have set our own radio in our own house, had we wanted to listen to the radio at 7:30am on a Saturday. Which we didn't - we wanted to sleep, because that's what we do at 7:30am on Saturdays. This behavior is unprofessional and illegal. read more

Because of the unreliability of recyclables pickups and poor responsiveness from Tenleytown supervisory personnel, we did choose another trash hauler that began last July. Tenleytown was true to form right up until the end, when they delayed picking up their equipment for days, holding up our new contractor from delivering their dumpsters. The new company, which was to begin July 1st, had to make several delivery attempts, and b/c of the July 4th holiday, we were without any dumpsters at all. I was admittedly lax in monitoring payments sent by our management company, but recently noticed that Tenleytown has continued to bill their monthly fee each month since July, though we had terminated our contract, and they have provided no service whatsoever. We are now in the position of having to seek a refund of nearly $1750.00. If you're a condo association, do yourselves a favor, and stay away. read more

Our Condo Association had horrible trash service with another provider, so we called Tenleytown Trash. They came out the very next morning with new equipment and even hauled away the last load of trash from our previous provider's bins. Their front office is responsive over both e-mail and telephone, and their truck personnel have been nothing but friendly and professional as well. For all of this and we even are saving $100 per month in collection fees by switching. This group really has is it together. Thank you so much! read more

I have used Tenleytown Trash for over 20 years at several rental properties. In that time I have had excellent trash service, responsive customer service, efficient accurate billing. I can't ask for anything more ( from a trash company) and I am really, really surprised at the negative reviews. Interesting that so many 5 stars are in the excluded reviews. Anyway, I would encourage anyone to use them, great people IMO, and in my experience if there is a problem, they care and they take care of it. I hope that their other loyal, satisfied customers help them raise their rating, I think that they deserve it! read more

Our condo association had a terrible trash company when I moved in. We replaced them with Tenleytown Trash. Tenleytown is an incredible improvement. The trash bins are no longer overflowing. The trash was picked up even when the city was shut down with snow. Highly recommend their services. read more

Like the last reviewer, I am not sure why Tenley has so many bad reviews. My condo in NW DC switched to Tenley 4 months ago after many miserable experiences with Republic Services. So far the experience has been excellent. Tenley is 1/3 the price of Republic and includes an extra pick-up day. Republic missed collections frequently, but so far Tenley has arrived like clockwork. As a side bonus, Tenley provided our building with a dumpster for recyclables, whereas Republic uses the rolling plastic bins. We can fit a lot more in the recycling dumpster because cardboard boxes can lay flat inside it, rather than getting stuck in the plastic bins. read more

We used Tenleytown Trash to clean out our basement before a move. Three guys showed up with a huge dumpster and cleared out everything in a little over an hour. They asked if we had anything else and I asked if they could take a couch, dresser and old desk from the top floor, which they happily did. Would definitely use them again! read more

Tenleytown Trash was very helpful in helping us solve a short term trash need. Our church hosts a hypothermia shelter for women during the winter months. In previous years, we were able to accommodate the extra trash but this year we found ourselves overwhelmed. Tenleytown was very accommodating in providing a dumpster and service for the few months we needed this service. I found them very responsive to our every concern and need. I can't say enough wonderful things about this company. They are very willing to provide community service. read more

Often times in property management you are only as good as the vendors you use. Tenley town is a small operation with zero customer service. Heaven help you if you have questions or something goes wrong with your weekly service. They claim to recycle but do dump the trash and recycling into the same truck. read more
