This synagogue is everything that gives religion a bad name.
It's bickery, it's political, it's shallow and vain.
They are in debt up to their eyeballs for a building that only gets crowded on Yom Kippur and they are always begging for more handouts like a needy meth addict on Wellfare. Once-a-year they host a fundraising galla that would make a Texan pageant queen gush. Only the rich and mighty can afford tickets to this event. If you're a pleb you can hand out name-tags and wistfully watch all the rich people enjoy cake. It's like living in a terrible stereotypical movie where all the rich, spoiled people get to set all the rules and all the poor people just serve them and hope they get noticed at the bottom----except that it's a religious place of worship. Yikes!
To top it off, these rich, spoiled people at TBI have formed an oligarchic Board Committee that fires and hires rabbis left and right. This synagogue is nothing short of a revolving door that ushers clergymen in and out like high fashion on a New York runaway. It's like a dating spree with rabbinical leadership, one right after the other. You never know whose going to be leading the service. "Oop, you like that rabbi- op nope, he's gone!"
They treat young people like floral decorations- grateful for something to brighten up the room but ultimately think we're disposable. They invest nothing in the young adult generation. All the decisions are made by a tight-knit clique of white-haired rich people who have been hanging around since Shlomo was young enough schlep around the SanFran Jewery with his P and a guitar (no joke, that's what he actually did).
The cherry on the horrific cake that is Temple Beth Israel is that while all this awful class-ism and age-ism goes on these people pretend to be liberal forerunners of democracy and equality. They think because they stick a LGBT and "Hate Free Zone" sticker on their window that they are some bastion of equa-rights and freedom but the reality is that Temple Beth Israel is about as dictatorial and tyrannical and aristocratic as a bunch of WASPS at a high Sunday tea.
Oh, btw- most of these people haven't even read the majority of the Torah or understand anything relevant to Judaism....but that doesn't stop them from hiring and firing rabbis like it's cool biz.
Please- don't bother with this synagogue. It's a shame to liberal Judaism and American Jewery, period. read more
