One or the other of my children has attended the Eugene Waldorf School for just over nine years now. My children have always been treated as whole people, humans with hopes and dreams and ideas at EWS. The Eugene Waldorf School is chock full of visual arts, music, handwork and woodwork, fantastic writing instruction, Spanish language learning, theater productions each class year, plenty of outdoor play, and science, math, and social studies blocks that meet children where they are. For instance, literature is taught through fairy tales in first grade and world literature in eighth grade. As seventh and eighth graders independently explore more of the world around them, their curriculum mirrors that discovery as students study the Renaissance and voyages of discovery. At the Eugene Waldorf School, regular festivals and celebrations such as the Winter Light Fair and May Fair mark the seasons, and older students become invested in and volunteer to help with events to help create the same magical festivals that they remember from their younger years. My kids love the Eugene Waldorf School, and my older child, now a junior in public high school, has carried that love of learning gained at EWS into a successful high school experience. read more

This is my child's first year at Waldorf after some time in public school and I am so happy. The classroom is beautiful and calming. The teacher stands in front of the classroom instead of sitting at a computer. There is no constant station switching and chaos. There are not hundreds of brain numbing worksheets. It feels like a very nurturing and safe environment. There are many community events and ways to be involved and get to know the community. Everyone has been very welcoming and accepting (I was a little worried about not being "Waldorf enough" but that hasn't been the vibe at all. The education feels very well rounded and geared toward appropriate child development. I feel happy dropping my child off in the morning knowing she will be cared for and immersed in a colorful learning experience. My daughter used to not answer any questions about what went on at school but now has a lot to share about what she learned and the adventures she had on the play ground. read more

The Eugene Waldorf School has been our home away from home! Grounded in an arts based education, children experience knitting, painting, music, storytelling and much more. I'm happy to know that my children build relationships with their teachers over time. Our children love to read, and love being read to! As a parent, I believe waldorf education holistically supports the developing child. Other appreciations at EWS include seasonal celebrations for children and families, and parent education through the college on campus.! The Eugene Waldorf School has been a profound experience in my family's life. Our son has been a student at the school since preschool and has been lovingly guided by the extremely dedicated and well-trained Waldorf teachers. There has never been a doubt in my or my husband's mind that our son is at the right school. We see that our child is receiving a very rich, intentional education that will serve to help him become a very well developed and adapted individual spiritually, physically, and intellectually. I love this school for my three children. They are calm, happy and have many good friends there. The education is like a spiral bringing in components of life that are important when they are ready to take in the information based on the phase of life they are in. I feel so blessed that I found this school for my children. My daughter is in 7th grade this year and she has been going to school here since pre-school. She has cultivated a love of learning and a joy of school that I did't think was possible. She is always excited to get back to school after a long break for the holiday and summer. My older step-daughter also went through the Waldorf school from Kindergarten through 8th grade. She is now a Junior at South Eugene High School and is thriving both academically as well as socially. I am not usually one to write reviews but I feel strongly the need to share a few remarkable aspects of the Eugene Waldorf School. My husband and I have one child in the Kindergarten program and one in the second grade which puts us at fours years in the school thus far; and every year spent with our incredibly skilled and cherished teachers reveals to me something valuable and new. This year our older child participated in "second grade" assessments which all 2nd Graders do and parents are welcome to sit-in and observe. They are provided by the school on site to assess any potential learning challenges that a student may face. The one hour assessment played out like a series of games that all the children thought were cool and fun. What this preventative measure picked up was that my child has auditory processing challenges that, without the proper therapy modalities, could lead to dyslexia and difficulty in reading. As parents we now have the right information to help our child before problems arise and issues of self-esteem follow. The teacher does too which is great! And specifically because Waldorf education allows space for the creative mind to breathe, activities are not reading dependent until third grade. I know that triggers some strong responses but the approach is actually much broader. Beginning in preschool, the teachers help train the eyes to track small details with finger weaving and train attention span with beautiful storytelling that can last 20 minutes! Storytelling lights up all functions of the brain just like classical music. Also, the low teacher/student ratio assures that my "middle-of-the-road" child will not be overlooked. I could actually rave about the Eugene Waldorf school endlessly but the last thing I'll say is that my children are received at school with a reverence for the divinity that lives within them. While there exists no official religious doctrine there does live a spirit of reverence that I have found too lacking in many of our modern societies and especially our publicly funded schools. We do pay a private tuition for which there are scholarships and tuition assistance, but what we get in return is priceless; just come to one of our open houses and experience the school and you will see the beauty and intelligence of the Eugene Waldorf School.
