I've seen them at the Culver City farmer's market more than once, but I bought from them for the first time last Tuesday. Usually I get priced out of buying grass-fed beef, but this time I decided to at least see what they were offering. I was frank about my lack of funds (but my desire for beef) and the guy manning the booth gave me some fantastic suggestions. I wanted steak, and steak I got...for $7 a pound! Sure, it wasn't a prime cut (it was from just behind the shoulder where the ribs end) but it was tender and flavorful, just as he said it would be. I found the cut to be more gamey than, say, a grass-fed sirloin (obviously), but I really enjoyed the flavor simply pan sauteed with a little garlic and rosemary. Gamey or not, at $7 a pound, it was a damn good deal! I was able to trim one a bone off the edge before cooking so that my dog Izzy could have it, and if she could talk, she would agree that it was delicious! J & J is bringing good, local, sustainable beef to customers here in LA, and that's awesome. They know their product and can help you choose the cut that's best for you, even if you have no knowledge of cow anatomy (and which parts that are best to eat.) They're friendly, accommodating guys, and I enjoyed my entire experience with them, from purchase to pan. I missed the market this week, but I'm holding out on buying beef until I can see them again. When you find a good farmer, growing and selling animals in an ethical, humane way, you just want to support them. When they're as nice as these guys are, it's a total no-brainer. The cafe is lovated at Mountain Valley Airport, a quick drive to the outskirts of Tehachapi. When we learned that they serve chili and homemade bread, we decided to visit later in the day for lunch. We were greeted by Aubrey and Ellie who were super helpful. We were able to enjoy our delicious chili with extra onions and an amazing hot slice of homemade lemon blueberry bread with butter. We sat outside under the trees next to the gliders, looking at the beautiful view. So much about Tehachapi is interesting and we have met some very welcoming people. This experience was a solid five star hidden gem for me. How many towns can offer visitors such a pleasant atmosphere? They are also open weekends so visitors to the festivals looking for something unique can enjoy a special treat. Just next to the glider port is an open field camping area that looks very lovely with gorgeous trees. We met a traveler with her two saluki dogs heading west to a dog show. Our server, Ellie, provided her with information about cafe hours and when to see the gliders in action. The cafe is closed on Tuesdays. The school and cafe receive lots of visitors from Edwards Air Force Base east of Mojave. They are located off Highline Road. It's a quick drive from Tehachapi Boulevard, going up Curry Street south to Highline, heading east on Highline and then turning south onto Turf Street. Follow Turf about a half mile and you will see the Skylark North Glider School. You can also approach the location from Dennison going south from East Tehachapi Boulevard and then turning west on Highline to Turf Street. If you are looking for a family-friendly place to go during your stay in Tehachapi, I highly recommend Raven's Nest. Call ahead and arrange for a glider ride too, or buy a gift certificate for someone else. Glider enthusiasts as well as foodies on road trips will love it here. Oh yes- we did buy a fresh loaf of homemade bread for a picnic in one of Tehachapi's luscious green parks later this week! I knew you would ask.

The staff were incredibly friendly, helpful, and welcoming, and the store was amazingly well stocked. Who knew the bridal party would suddenly need straws to drink? No problem -- they had straws! After making eight visits over two days, they even knew me by name! That kind of friendly, personal service is becoming harder and harder to find. I stopped in around 5:30 a.m., and it's refreshing to find a place that's not only open that early but also staffed by someone who genuinely enjoys being there. The barista greeted me with a smile, was friendly and welcoming, and made an outstanding Americano. It was incredibly smooth and one of the better Americanos I've had in a long time. I also appreciated that my drink was served in a real ceramic mug for a dine-in order--a small touch that made the experience feel warm and inviting. As someone who likes to get an early start, I was also happy to find plenty of outlets and reliable Wi-Fi, making it an ideal spot to get some work done before the day begins. Great coffee, genuine hospitality, and a cozy atmosphere made for the perfect start to my morning. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in town.
