She made me feel like we ( we because as parents, things that affect our kids affect us) were "seen." I think more often than not people get complacent in their careers, including the medical or mental health field, which I would chalk up to human nature. However, she never made me feel like my kid was number or just another patient. She was someone going through something and Jess was going to figure it out. We had to stop seeing Jess due to some circumstances out of my control. Which only lead us to a merry go round of therapists and it wasn't until then, that I was able to fully appreciate her, not only for her emotional investment in my child but also for her instincts, which were proven to be spot on. While on that mental health merry go round, I learned that not every therapist has the capability to convey a genuine sense of commitment and concern for their client/patient , however Jess did. Taking on someone else's emotional pain, trauma, anxieties and fears has to be one of the hardest jobs I could imagine, especially when it comes to children...so I can understand having and internal shut off valve and not fault anyone needing to enact that protective mechanism. But as a parent who's child hurts....I sure as shit want someone who sees my kid, as I see them. Once again I saw Jess early in her career. For over two weeks, I repeatedly tried to get a clear answer about whether I could receive a short bridge prescription to get me to an upcoming appointment with a new provider. When it became clear a refill might not be possible, I specifically asked for guidance on how to safely stop the medication. That guidance was never provided. Being left without direction regarding mental health treatment is unacceptable. I chose to leave this practice because I did not feel listened to by Dr. Westbrock. Diagnoses were mentioned without explanation, alternative causes were not meaningfully explored, and my concerns were largely dismissed. When I asked about further evaluation, I was told it would require several additional appointments and approximately $800 in fees, after already paying for the visit I was attending. The process felt more focused on billing than patient care. After securing a new provider, I contacted Lighthouse weeks in advance because I knew I would run out of medication before that appointment. I made it clear that I understood if a refill was not possible and that I was simply asking for guidance. Despite multiple attempts, my requested were ignored by Dr. Westbrock. Even after being told by the medical assistants this bridge refill should have been possible. Lighthouse medical assistants have reached out and apologized on behalf of the team. They stated the issue was with Dr. Westbrock and said that if I wanted a bridge now, three weeks later, they could forward me to the director. I appreciate the medical assistants who attempted to help every time I called. However, this situation should have been escalated to leadership much earlier, and at the end of the day Dr. Westbrock is employed by this office and his actions reflect the office. Overall, this experience left me feeling dismissed and unsupported at a critical moment in my care. The only reason I chose 2 stars instead of 1 was the medical assistants consistently trying their best. It is disappointing they are not listened to by their superiors. I am sharing this so others can make an informed decision when choosing providers.

The office has no after hours drs on call, yet, they are allowed to prescribe drugs that are highly addictive with zero regard as to what they do to their patients. They refuse to treat or even test anyone older than 55 years, even though all other psychiatrists in Phoenix who don't focus on only ADHD. The test for ADHD is not different at any age. They base their claim of not having the skills to treat older people using outdated studies. If the risk for side effects is insignificantly different at any age, do they have the skills to treat younger people when they have the same reaction or complications from the medication? Why don't they accept middle aged to older patients who don't want to take stimulants or just want to take the test? What do they do when a patient of long standing turns 55? Are these patients aware that they may be sent somewhere else, even if they are healthy and stable? If you know of anyone 55+currently being treated at this clinic, was referred somewhere else after they turned 55, or was denied treatment at any age due to complications or being at higher risk, please message me. In conclusion, if it is obvious they do have the skills to treat and monitor patients of all ages, why are they practicing ageism? Beware of specialists with wonderful bedside manners but are known to screen patients based on statistics and chronological rather than biological age, or who may develop mild, easily treatable complications.

Almost two years ago I was summarily dismissed from my…read moreprior provider of over 10 years when my Cobra insurance ran out and I needed to self-pay for services that, by the sheer nature of needing to see a neurology specialist for them, were formidable enough that this event caused me unnecessary anxiety bordering on panic. Taking my health into my own hands, I began a search for providers that would accept self-pay while using all the resources available on the internet to find reviews, publicly-available professional histories and my gut feeling. JoEllen Butler's practice astonishingly quieted all of those extra doubts and anxieties surrounding being completely blocked from access to treatments that I had been tested for and had medicines prescribed to treat for over a decade. She knew all too well that larger practices often will deny a self-pay option. Unfortunately for me, my doctors at the other practice never mentioned it. Ms. Butler is a gentile, exuberant and extremely knowledgeable professional. The office is lovely with large high-ceilinged offices and a calming waiting room. I tend to get more anxious in small cluttered offices because of a mild-ish case of claustrophobia. She and her office manager-extraordinaire Lisa are so genuine and kind. Lisa never rushes through the intake portion of every appointment and she is always on-point when it comes to submitting refills, returning calls or texts for appointments as well as reminder calls for appointments. I never have to worry that any request I have will slip through the cracks. I can't say enough about Ms. Butler. On my first visit, she thoroughly reviewed the records I brought her from my prior practice and made two small changes to my treatment that improved my quality of life almost immediately. My regimen had not been changed in six years at my prior practice. I can say at this time that I am GLAD they refused to treat me on self-pay. If not for that, I would never have moved on. The day JoEllen Butler's practice either relocates or closes down for her retirement, THAT will be a different story.
