Well this is an oshawa institution. I have been living in Durham region for a couple of decades now but never close. However we are always ready for a road trip to visit. The latest visit was as good as the first one. Same decor, everything still spotless, wait staff friendly and fast. Due to us missing Thanksgiving we had turkey. Yes real turkey not processed roll. Large portions as usual, house made gravy. Mmmm. Close to the 401 easy to get to parking on site. Excellent choice in the menu. And the house made rice pudding for dessert or strawberry pie. A relic from the past is still going but I'm not sure that is a good thing. Dinner on a Sunday evening at 7pm was met with immediate news that they were closing at 8pm so we were told to rush and order asap. Our server was rough around the edges, very short and to the point. Food was good. A nice portion sized deli sandwich and crispy, golden cut fries. This is why you're coming to Teddy's and the cooks are making it happen. The decor is horribly dated, the restaurant hasn't been updated since the 90s. It's like looking at a parody restaurant from a movie with all the sports and tchotchke memorabilia on the walls from years gone by. It's in a desperate need of an update. My biggest gripe was the server taking our deserts order while in the middle of vacuuming the restaurant because they were closing soon and she obviously wanted to go home. It doesn't make you feel very welcome. They also locked the doors and told us we had to leave from the side door instead of the main entrance. On our way back from Ottawa, I knew I wanted to stop in at Teddy's for a quick lunch. When I lived in the area, I always really enjoyed the place and I was curious if it was as solid as I remembered. It sure is. We showed up shortly after they opened at 11:00 and the place was already half full. We snagged a nice booth near the back of the restaurant and I began searching through their extensive menu. I remembered that the platters were all enormous and I wasn't quite hungry enough for that, so I was happy to discover that they now have a "For Small Appetites" section. I decided to go with the Roast Sirloin ("Slow-cooked overnight, 6oz portion smothered in Mushroom Beef Sauce, served with Horseradish"). I got that with a garden salad and a side of fries. First up was the salad, which I was the most excited about. It's all about that house dressing, which is still delicious and weirdly addictive. (Of course I bought a bottle to take home!) The main arrived shortly after and it's really good. The meat is very tender and tasty, the fries are piping hot, and that delicious gravy ties everything together. We went to Teddy's for lunch today, the decor is kind of old looking but I like it. I had the grilled cheese on brown bread. It was good, it tastes very similar to every other grilled cheese sandwich you get at other places but all grilled cheese's taste the same. The bread was perfectly grilled and the cheese was melted nicely. It could have been melted a little more but it's fine. Fries came with it and they are so delicious. I had a small salad also. It was good but I wish there was more tomatoes. I tried some gravy and it was pretty good. I have been to Teddy's many times over the years. Surprised I've never left a review. Be prepared on a weekend or a weekday during the lunch rush to have a lineup to get in. Yes it's that good, and it's worth the wait. The line generally moves quick and you can choose from one of their many dishes. This time we opted for: BBQ Beef Melt with roast potatoes Clubhouse and coleslaw Pizza Burger with roast potatoes All of the portions were enormous. The open face pizza food was superb. Dined on Teddy's Philly Burger (upgraded from 7 to a 10oz patty) and a Smoked Meat Sandwich on Rye. Added the daily soup of Chicken Vegetable. Absolutely the best Julienne Salad. Add their house dressing and you are having a delicious and healthy meal.

Dropped in for weekday lunch around noon and there was already a line up. Thankfully the line up moved quickly and we were seated within 20 minutes. Their menu is extensive with deli/family restaurant favorites. I opted for the Montreal smoked meat sandwich with fries and gravy and my lunch mate ordered a hot turkey sandwich with a side of fries, corn and cream of potato soup. Food arrived quickly and the portions were hefty. We were both able to finish less than half of our lunch. Everything tasted as expected with the turkey gravy being too bland and regular gravy (for my fries) being too salty. Cream of potato soup was tasty and and chunky. I liked that their Montreal smoked meat wasn't too salty. We shared a strawberry pie with whipped cream (extra) which was loaded with plump strawberries. It was probably the best strawberry pie I've ever had. Along with good food and friendly staff makes Teddy's a great place for a comforting meal with excellent value for your hard earned $$. Its a very spacious old diner style comfort food where it seems like the type of environment where people have worked there for a long time. This place attracts a lot of seniors... Order side of Onion Rings for $6 -Comes with swiss cheese, onions, sauteed peppers, mushrooms, topped with teddy's chipotle sauce. - The burger meat is comparable to home made burgers you can get at Mom & Pop shops for cheaper. Its not the juiciest or dry, its in between really. - Onion rings based on pricing and portion and quality taste is NOT there at all.. Honestly one of the worst onion rings we've had at an establishment... Still unsure how you can pay this pricing at a diner with no sides that come with it... You'd think only higher end places is a la carte everything... The Warehouse (comes with Corned Beef, Pastrami, Smoked Meat, Turkey, Roast Beef) - $13.40 and got side of roasted potatoes for $5.07) -Round up to 18.50! - The sandwich does seem appealing with the tower high amount of meat that you can't really fit into a bite...The turkey meat is definitely the most dry out of the bunch...The roasted potatoes were better than the onion rings... We skipped the dessert b/c in the past we've tried their signature coconut pie... When going to this place there was a little line of people waiting to get seated but it went by fast. The waitress we had was so friendly and polite. The food was delicious and it was huge portions. So my three star is for a few reasons; let's talk about the positives first. The food was amazing, the pie's are delicate and delicious, and the wait times for a table and food are very short. My issue comes with the service, perhaps it was because my friends and I were the youngest patrons present by at least 20 years. We were dealt with rudely, with sarcastic remarks and with snarky comments. At one point, our waitress, who's name I did not get, put down a pitcher of water and only notified us with a, "Water" before she quickly walked away. Our waitress continuously forgot about items we ordered and refills we asked for. Now, I would like to say that we were not being any louder than the other tables and we were not disrupting the rest of the patrons. We were patient and as polite as could be through the terrible service. 3/5 stars because the food was amazing and amazingly priced, and because terrible service isn't a deal-breaker for me. read more

My husband and went to Tedd on Saturday February 18th for supper. Our waitress Pam was truly amazing. The cook tried a new soup got Thanksgiving and he had made it tonight. He calls it Turkey stuffing! When the waitress told me, I krinkled my nose. She said just try it and if you don't like it, I will bring you something else. Well ,it had to be one of the best soups I had at Teddy's. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't try it. At the end of our meal, we talked to Pam and one of the managers, and they said they are getting such good reviews about the soup, that they are going to put it into the regular rotation!! I'm sure some things are just fine, but I went for my annual turkey dinner today and convinced friends and family to join me. It did not begin to compare to the turkey dinners I've had at Teddy's in the past and I felt guilty having told everyone how home made tasting and great it is. 1. Teddy's was one of the few places where I could get traditional sage dressing... no longer the case. It was flavourless and, worse still, it was so thick I needed to cut it with a knife!!! Literally!!! 2. Gravy... none on the potatoes and very little on the rest of the meal. I think nothing (like milk, butter, whatever) was added to the bland potatoes. Three others at the table agreed and now think poorly of Teddy's (one had never been there before). One person had one of the California sandwiches and said it was good. Another had the club... probably good, but she didn't weigh in. I'll be hesitant next year for sure, though I'll likely feel safe ordering the corned beef and cabbage... OH, generous serving (full turkey dinner), so I'll be adding sage and more gravy (I asked for some) and mushing up the dressing.. maybe making hash. Twice. :) read more

I recently took my family to Teddy's for dinner on a Sunday night for the first time. The place was steady, but not crowded. It's a deli type of vibe, so don't go in expecting some posh, high-end environment. We were in search of good food in a clean place. We found it! Shelley was our server. She was so pleasant. She knew the menu, gave suggestions (because I asked for them). My wife went with her suggestion of the roast. She loved it! I had the beef patty smothered in gravy and onions. I loved it. The mashed potatoes were good. Our kids enjoyed their meals. The kid desserts were skimpy, which the kids questioned, but I didn't care. I'm trying to train them to reduce their sugar intake anyway. Ha ha Oh, I hope they begin putting their veggies on a side dish. Maybe I should just request it though. My peas were soaked in gravy because they were on the plate. Yuck! I want peas to taste like peas. Yes, I'm one of those persons. Nothing can touch. I only ate the peas that were not touching the gravy. LOL. Next time, I will ask. They were slightly undercooked too. I'm not going to put anyone in jail for that though. I got a slice of chocolate cake to go and it was great! Again, Teddy's is not a high end spot, but their food was good. We will return. Checked this one out enroute home from the cottage. It was highly rated. I understand why. Service: It is your typical old school diner with your usual suspects for the menu. The service is also old school. With nice ladies who know the menu like the back of their hand. They are efficient and fast and they know their patrons probably by first name basis. We were treated just as well and lookkng around us the caring service was present in all of them. An older couple next to us was actually escorted out arm in arm to make sure she safely walks out with her cane. Right away 2 other staff came and were picking up some crumbs they seen on the ground by hand. Yes by hand! Although that may seem kinda gross, they washed their hands after. The sink can be seen right there. Food: Onto the food. Good old down home cooking! The clam chowder was great and was served quickly. My steak was tender with sauteed onions for a mere $12.95 with the soup. Our other meal was the salubury steak which came wih 2 sides and the clam chowder for $15.95. And of course the pies, they seem to be known for it. Mounds of these pies seen as you enter. It was great not too sweet just right. The cruat was also quite good. Fortunately there's a large waiting area inside for those cold winter days. They have a separate take out section as well. They have a large diner style menu. Prices aren't too bad, especially for the amount of food you get. A lot of their food is homemade - including their famous pies, and salad dressings. Teddy's Mixed Grill ($19.95) is a great mishmash of a 7oz New York steak, a 7oz burger, a 5oz chicken breast, a slice of pea meal bacon and fried mushrooms. A total of 20 oz. I will make this concise: every piece of meat on this plate is very tender, juicy and flavourful. Roast Turkey Dinner ($16.45) comes with a plate of turkey meat (an assortment of cuts of the breast, the thighs and the drumsticks). Cooked daily, served with turkey gravy, stuffing or rye and cranberry sauce. To finish it off, we got a huge slice of strawberry pie ($5.25) with whip cream (optional for $2.00). The pie definitely lives up to its 'signature dessert' status. I like the fact that they give a lot of strawberries, more than pie crust. The strawberries were very fresh and succulent and not too sweet. This is the place in Oshawa to get an authentic three-course homestyle meal at a very affordable price.
