I broke my computer screen and was so worried and stressed because I needed for school. All the people at technology associates were so kind and helpful. I had apple care on my mac but was still worried that they would charge me (a broke collage student) lots of fees for repair. However they were able to get it fixed within the day and only charged me the apple care rate. Charles especially was the reason for the quick turnaround, even during the time of part shortages. I took my MacBook Pro to this store, Technology Associates, in downtown Iowa City due the fact that it was not working properly. I was told that the laptop needed a new screen and that it could be repaired within an hour or so. After that, within another 15 minutes or so, I was told that the circuit board inside the laptop needed to be replaced. Since I had purchased Apple Care Plus (after the purchase of the MacBook Pro), I could get a new screen at no cost but the new circuit board would cost $299.00 plus tax. I was quite surprised because the INTERNAL PARTS OF THE LAPTOP WERE WORKING!! Only the screen was damaged. I spoke to Charles Tomes, one of the "Associates" at the store, WHO INSISTED IN A HIGHLY DICTATORIAL MANNER, that the laptop had to be sent into Apple for repair and it would take 5-7 business days to get it returned to me. He was NOT GOING TO GIVE ME BACK MY LAPTOP!! Ridiculously and unnecessarily authoritative and dictatorial!!! These "Associates" at this store which represent Apple need additional training to be more in line with the Apple company and brand. read more

I had issues with my MacBook Pro after downloading the new Apple Sierra update. I stopped by Best Buy on Saturday to ask if they were an Authorized Apple repair location. The associate informed me that they were not, and they advised me to go to Technology Associates or this private person because that's whom they send their Mac repairs to anyway (which I believe it may have cost me even more). I couldn't locate the private person's information, but Technology Associates came up on Google right away and had several great reviews. I called in and spoke with Gary. Right away, he suggested some possible causes and resolutions to me. I dropped off my computer in the morning and by afternoon, they called me and let me know my computer was repaired. Service was awesome, and Gary was great to work with. He was very knowledgeable and was able to figure out the problems quickly. The customer service was excellent. As for the repair fees, I believed it was very reasonable. They charged me a $60 labor repair fee (I believe this was the base fee), and they did suggest a new battery was needed, but I opted out at the time because it was $160 that I couldn't pay. To be honest, if you go to any other places to get something fixed like your car, you'll know the base fee, but you won't know the final fees until they find issues. I'm not sure why several others said the charges aren't reasonable/fair. I highly recommend Technology Associates if you need a fix on your MacBook. They are located between Hilton Garden Inn and the Encounter Cafe. Convenient location near downtown. My girlfriend recently took her MacBook here for repair when her hard drive failed. She's not an expert in computers; she gave it to them, said "fix it", and paid the bill when it came back. On the upside, the repair seems to be of good quality, and their price to replace the hard drive and reinstall the OS was very reasonable. (They also replaced the bottom plate on the laptop, which was broken, free of cost as it was under warranty.) What concerns me is the price paid for the hard drive. They invoiced her at $160 for the drive, but checking various online sites (NewEgg, Tiger Direct, Dell) shows it to be worth $65-$80. I understand the need to make a profit, but a 100% markup seems a bit unreasonable to me, especially given that they still charged labor on top of the cost of the part. read more

I went in with a mid-2012 macbook pro that was booting up slowly and needed a new battery. I was interested in finding out if anything else was wrong with the machine and getting a quote for a battery replacement. As it turns out, the "diagnostics" cost $60! Had no clue until i came in to pick up my laptop 3 days later (slower turn around then i was promised initially). It's already an old machine that doesn't cost much and i was literally just looking for a cheap solution and some guidance since I can't afford a new computer right now....basically, beware of this place if you're looking to get an honest quote and trying to save money. I could've used that $60 for a new SSD or a new battery...but instead I paid $60 for them to tell me that nothing was done and they ran a "diagnostic." I would've given -5 stars if I could. Verizon sent me here to get help from an Apple certified service company. When I walked in they told me the person that could help was at lunch and I could leave my device. I asked when the worker would be back and Gary responded that they were opened till 5pm. Tech Associates was recommended to me by my boss four years ago, and since them I've used them three times. They are friendly, and most importantly, honest people. My Macbook was having issues with its battery this weekend, and I had given them permission to just replace it as needed. Instead, they called me to let me know they could replace it, but with the problems with the other systems I'd be back in two months. They instead helped me recover files from my hard drive (which was much cheaper than the battery replacement; I'm sure they lost money by letting me know). I'm very impressed with them and will continue to go back. read more

This place was THE WORST! I scheduled an appointment to have my iPhone screen fixed at 9:20. I drive an hour and a half to have it serviced; the guy behind the desk took all my information and told me the tech wouldn't get there for another 20 minutes (so why did you schedule me for 9:20?). He then tells me it'll be 11:30 at the latest, but hopefully done by 11. Not ideal, but fine. I sit it my car until 11, go back to check the status's and the kid says "I'm just getting ready to start it, you should come back at 1." So I've invested 3 total hours of driving, plus two hours of waiting and I still have the same broken screen. That's a poor way to handle business. read more

I've gotten work done here twice, once a simple fix and once a pretty involved hardware fail. It's a great small business to have in town, and it's always been done in a timely and courteous fashion. One of the not-so-great parts of the Mac cult is the "We're not aware of this issue" doublespeak from Genius Bar or AppleCare phone lines. Here, however, you see pride in workmanship and responsive customer service. As for the evasiveness and rudeness mentioned by a couple of reviewers, I imagine if you come into any small repair shop with a FIX THIS NOW--*is it done yet* attitude, you as the customer are probably setting the negative tone. A couple of years ago, I came in not under warranty and I was given an accurate quote and an honest, candid prognosis for my janky, out-of-date hardware that I chose to fix anyway. It held up for a year, which was really a miracle, but I appreciated the "you should replace this" advice in retrospect as looking out for my best interests. More recently, I came in covered by Applecare, and I have to say, it couldn't have been a simpler and easier process. Lastly, I think it's really important to have repair people available who are trained, certified, competent, and trustworthy--AND have no sales interest in planned obsolescence. read more

I took my Macbook Pro to Tech Associates at 9am on a Tuesday. They told me there were two possibilities: either my hard drive failed or the cable connecting to my hard drive failed. Either way, they promised my computer would be finished by Friday. They called me back at 4:15 that same day to tell me my computer was ready to go. I really couldn't have asked for faster service. As far as the quality of customer service goes, it's exactly as good as someone should expect from a business that spends more time working with computers than with people (i.e. professional, knowledgeable, but not going to coddle you and give you false promises regarding their ability to fix your device), especially considering that the majority of the people they do deal with seem to think that if they call frequently to check on the status of their device, the work will somehow be completed faster. Wrong, you've actually just pulled the tech away from working on your computer. It will now take longer to complete. They were very clear when I dropped off my computer that they would call and/or email when the work was complete--which they did :) Finally, if you research their BBB rating, you'll see it results from similar factors that might cause an 18 year old to have a bad credit rating--lack of history. They have had exactly one complaint filed against them with the BBB in the last three years which they failed to reply to. This is the factor dragging down their BBB rating--nothing to do with a record of poor service. Staff member actually told me that he had bad news, my repair would not be done until Tuesday and I dropped it off on a Friday. This was not bad news at all since I thought the repair would take a week at least. And it ended up that it was repaired and read for pick up on Monday. Don't ever take your computer there! They'll take your computer without any charge at first and on top of repair costs they change a $60 flat fee to see what's wrong with it and they'll only tell you that when you come back for your computer! Not only that they claimed my Mac had water damaged being that I have NEVER spilled anything on my Mac, and they send me a picture of my Mac with the water damage which looks like they had just put the water there recently as you can see it shine, just so they can charge me a lot more to "fix" my computer... Take it to best buy it anything it'll take just as long to repair the flat fee is $20 lower and they have guarantee on it, as well as a lot of a better customer service read more

They do not work on iPhones or iPads no matter what their website says. Technology Associates is listed as a service provider (Premium) on the Apple Website. I had a problem with my iPad and chatted with Apple. They provided Technology Associates as a place where it could get it repaired. I went to the apple website to make certain that was true, finding that they were listed as a premium repair site with iPad repair capabilities. I emailed them that I would like the repair and they told me 'apple requires that you send in iPads for repair'. Now, since Apple had sent me to this service provider I i was suspicious. I visited with Technology associates and was told 'Apple requires that all iPad repairs be sent in'. I pushed them saying that I might as well not try the other repair shop in Cedar Rapids as iPads are to be sent in. They replied, well, they couldn't speak for another shop.......wait. Is there some misrepresentation going on? Did they out rightly lie to me about iPads needing to be sent in for repair? Apparently they don't want to work on them so they completely misrepresent the situation. MacHeadquarters in Cedar Rapids will work on my iPad, they did not indicate that the iPads need to be sent in. I will not return to this shop. They only want to repair computers but put they will repair iPad and iPhones on the website to lure in folks. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Stop pretending you are a premium service provider when you are not. Next stop-apple website to correct the problem! read more
