by Juno (throwback, circa 2014)

Juno is here, so I followed! I met Juno about four years ago when I wanted to chop off my long hair and needed a hairstyle that would be super low maintenance. This was at a different shop. (https://www.yelp.com/biz/tease-group-new-york?osq=tease) I'm horribly lazy and unmotivated when it comes to styling my hair. Long hair was easier for me since I could toss it into a bun or ponytail, or simply let air dry, no styling needed. I had no idea how capable I was of handling short hair until I met Juno! He always gives me cuts that I can handle, which is why I keep coming back to him, even hunting him down each time he changed locations. I went to someone else for a haircut once. Once. It was at a very famous, very well-reputed salon. My hair looked great when I came out, but the look was nothing I could recreate on my own. My hair looked horrible on a day-to-day. I didn't know what else to do other than to come BACK to Juno for him to fix it. Since then, he has been the only person I let touch my hair. As for the shop...LOVE IT! It's bright. It's clean. It's staffed with other awesome stylists! Based on some of the reviews that predate mine, I can see every stylist has their own loyal and grateful customers.

I asked for light angling/layering and this is what I got.

TLDR: 4-5 stars for trims and blowouts (good with curly ethnic hair), 1 star for haircut. So, I've been going to Techni for about 3 years. I had just been going in for trims (once a year) and a blowout. Those times I was always happy with the end product. They did a great job with trimming (never got scissor happy or cut more than necessary) and they have always done an amazing job blowing out my hair (which is not easy since I have thick ethnic curls). (4-5 stars for this) (1 star for this) Then last Thursday I went in since my hair was really long (basically touching my bum long) and I was ready to just let a good stylist do something nice with it. I literally came in with no idea what to do (keep it long or do a whole new shorter style), I was open for any suggestions by the stylist . I even was ready to show a photo of my face (since they can't see it with my mask on) so they could have an idea what to do with my hair to complement it/frame it. I've gone to other salons where stylists are very good at helping you come up with something that works for you/your hair type and they always love having that freedom. Well, not here. When I honestly said that I didn't know what to do and was open to suggestions the stylist asked for a photo of what I wanted. I showed him a photo of my face to help him get an idea how to cut my hair for it, and he was confused. Once I realized that he wasn't going to help me, I said to just trim the dead ends, add some light layers and fix some uneven strands at the front. He ended up cutting the front sides of my hair so short that they did not at all transition nicely or evenly to the back of my hair. I expressed this concern when it was wet and he insisted once he dried it it would look better and he could make adjustments then too. At this point he had already cut off about 3-4 inches of the back of my hair. The blow drying and straightening of my hair was fine but then i could really see how uneven the angle was from the front/side to the back. At that point i was expecting him to make trims to the back because the front was so short in comparison but he kept cutting and angling the front of my hair. I literally had to stop him halfway and just tell him what to do. I couldn't believe that I needed to tell the stylist how to fix my hair. The solution ended up being asking him to just cut more of the back hair which was another 3 inches to better work with the front. I just wanted to be done at this point but the thing that upset me more is that I ended up with a shorter haircut that looks bad! Had I known i was going to lose 6-8 inches of my long mane, I would have just done that from the start and donated that hair as I have done in the past. And come prepared with a photo for a shorter haircut. The hair looked fine when it was straight (which is not how I wear my hair and the stylist knew that). And now that I washed it and can see it as curly hair I've seen how bad the cut is for my hair type. There is no nice angling or framing of my face and instead I have some strands in the front that are the same length and then the rest of my hair that is noticeably longer. No layers, no framing of my face, no consideration for layering to make the curly hair look good. On top of that, the front side strands aren't even the same length from the right to the left. You can see in the attached photos how bad (nonexistent) the angling and layering turned out and how the longer hair isn't even the same length where it should be. I'm so disappointed and now am considering getting a haircut again, elsewhere, to fix this so my hair may even end up shorter....

I started going to Techni's 13th Street location at the recommendation of my sister. You'll find my review of her stylist and my backup, Vincent, on that yelp page! This new location is small, but it doesn't feel claustrophobic. It's New York, I'm more concerned with how clean an establishment is and Techni staff ensures their places are nothing if not spotless (apart from the hair being cut off of course, but that is swiftly cleaned up after.) Jason has been an awesome stylist since day one. I show him photos just to make sure he understands what I'm going for, but he's extremely attentive and explains everything he can and will do with your hair. Always makes sure you don't get more or less cut off than you want! I've always found it a little hard to tell a stylist when I want more cut off, so Jason going the extra step and asking every so often is very helpful for me. I sincerely recommend him. Strangers have come up asking me where I get my hair cut and now I carry some Techni business cards so I can properly point new people on their direction! This company was started by a group of stylists and it's fairly small, plus affordable! I usually pay about $45, I think last time was $50 because I had a blowout, but you can see all their prices on their websites or just give them a call. Every staff member is very nice and I don't know if I've ever had a more comfortable hair wash at another salon. There's really nothing bad I can say about these guys! The photos attached are two from the day I got it cut and a little over a week later. My hair can be hard to work with, but since getting this cut, it's been so much easier to dry and brush into shape. I haven't used my straightener in a couple weeks!

Picture I showed them

They are unable to interpret the hairstyle on the picture I showed them. Length, layers, style, texture, they got them all wrong. The stylist kept trying to tell me that he gave me a similar haircut and I need to "style differently", and he kept failing to style it the way on the picture for me despite him using a straightening iron, a curling iron, and two different hairdryers. At the end he just got irritated and said the picture "looks horrible"!! Hey, if you hate my picture so much you should have told me up front so that I can have someone else cut my hair! Super disappointed, will never return.

So this is my right side & is not the best style- I tried combing it and even put hair cream

I was pleased that I was able to get my haircut same day. Although, I didn't follow my gut and I paid the price, with a scorpion guy - which is his birth month; he was pretty cool, seemed like he knew what he was doing but not the best ever. I really like the place itself, but his performance was not as professional. In the result I look like a "mushroom" from the Mario bros. game. I avoid these kind of style and some reason, I attracted it with him.. I showed a picture and as soon he stated he can't promise to make it look like that, I should had run blocks away but I gave benefit of doubt - It is kinda of a bad hair cut- his cut styles are for younger kids. Just not for me. And plus all my curls are officially dead... they say bad hands kills curls. Now I have a choppy like style and this is what happens when you are risk taker with too many people. ‍! Well you live and learn. I am cracking up!

Bottom looks a little uneven but it's just the photo angle

Although this area is overflowing with nice hair salons, I chose this place because of their high yelp rating and slightly cheaper price point ($60 for wash and cut as opposed to 80+). I usually head to Chinatown for haircuts but had no qualms paying extra for a nicer experience and end result. Since getting some bad bangs elsewhere and painstakingly growing them out, it's been since my hair has felt cute. Thanks to Kenny for the bouncy, layered cut-- I will be back!

& after!

I haven't had a haircut in more than four years and came across this salon on a whim by googling "hair salon near me." Didn't read a single review. Feeling really spontaneous and bold today, I guess. Anyway, Juno did a fantastic job! He asked what I was looking for & understood my ramblings (shorter than it is but blunt but soft). He paused & asked me what I thought before cutting off the final inch -- to make sure I was on board with the massive change! Seriously, he probably cut off 10 inches today. My hair looks beautiful & has so much movement and feels so light and bouncy. I feel like a new woman; thank you Juno!!! Also -- these prices are sooo reasonable.

Appointments became rushed, started late, and lacked even basic professionalism. You're barely greeted when you walk in, and the overall tone makes it feel like you're inconveniencing them just by being there. I told them multiple times I had a head injury from a concussion and the lack of care was very concerning how abrasively they washed and handled my head. My most recent appointment was a complete failure. I asked for a warm, golden brown and came prepared with multiple reference photos. While the color was processing, I clearly flagged that it was pulling purple. That concern was dismissed, and the product was left on longer. The result was the darkest my hair has ever been, almost black with a cool, purple hue. The exact opposite of what I requested. The color job is all mismatched, the lower part of my hair significantly darker, the roots are sloppy and uneven. When I pointed this out, the response was defensive and dismissive. At one point, I was sarcastically asked if I wanted to "bleach it," which is an inappropriate and careless suggestion for already fine hair. It was mind blowing to have this handled so poorly and then be rushed through a cut that does not look anywhere close to the quality of the past cuts. I followed up requesting a refund, given that this will take months to correct and fade, and received no response for over 48 hours. It's not even about the money - it's about the severe lack of respect. What's most surprising is that this level of defensiveness and lack of accountability was unacceptable, especially after such a grave mistake. Instead of thoughtful adjustment and ownership, the response was dismissive in the moment and silent afterward. Mistakes happen. How they're handled is what defines a business. This was not handled well. NYC has no shortage of salons that can deliver both technical skill and professionalism. This is not one of them. Updating this with a pic and additional NYC HAIR SALON SEO terms so future customers are warned since the salon has decided to block me after no satisfactory resolution. The pic at the top right was me pre-hair f*** up. Only come to this salon if you'd like to come home and cry.

This was their "best advice for me" and that I should come back and get both together. I only needed a haircut and this was the only chance I got (I am a SAHM with 2 kids and minimal backup except this day) so I said I would consider it but I need a cut now. It was 6 months since my last. That must have just not been the right thing to say bc I was judged, insulted during the entire session and I got the worst haircut of my life. I can't even get it fixed because it is so much shorter than I wanted. There are huge "texture" discrepancies all over my hair, the most obvious being in the back near my neck. There's also a strand of hair far longer than the entire length of my bob cut. I don't even understand how this happened. I'm so traumatized. I would never recommend this place and will never ever come back. I really had 1 chance to get a cut as a treat to myself, since I really don't have extra time to spare. And now I have to live with this until it grows out, definitely more than 6 more months. If I could give -1000 stars, I would. Please do yourself a favor and find a salon that can do a nice cut for long AND SHORT hair. WITHOUT A PERM TO MAKE IT ALL STRAIGHT FIRST. The skill level here is just so sub par. I haven't cut my hair in 6 months and I have really long straight natural hair so you can say it is a blank canvas. Leaving the salon it looked good styled but when I went home to wash it and had more time to look without it curled I saw really choppy layers and the length is much shorter than i wanted. For a cut I paid $107-110 not including tips and expected a decent cut for that amount. Truly disappointing as holidays are coming up and I have been wearing a hat to cover up, cannot wait for this to grow out but will take months. Ara was really sweet and nice but I don't think the skills were there.
