A Disheartening Experience - I Will Not Return…read more As a Black woman and customer, I feel it's important to share an experience that left both my daughter and me feeling unwelcome and discriminated against at Ly Nail Salon in Belleville, MI. We visited the salon around noon on a Friday. I checked in with my phone number, and a young lady at the front desk asked what service we needed. I requested a polish change for myself, and my daughter wanted a manicure. A man working there came over and spoke to the young lady in a language I didn't understand. After their conversation, she told us they had no openings--not now and not for the rest of the day. That was disappointing, but honestly, I had already felt a negative energy when we walked in, so I accepted it and began to leave. As we were walking out, an older white woman walked in. Something told me to ask her if she had an appointment. My daughter and I turned around and re-entered the salon. The white woman was comfortably seated, waiting for her turn. I asked her if she had an appointment, and she politely said no. I then asked the young lady at the desk how they suddenly had an opening. Her response was, "Oh, one just became available." I reminded her that she had just told us they had no openings for the entire day. She quickly said, "We can take you now." At that moment, I told her plainly: her actions felt racist, and I would not be accepting their services. We left, and shortly afterward I received a text message from her apologizing for her behavior. While I appreciate the apology, the damage was already done. Discrimination only takes one time to do lasting harm. I will never return to Ly Nails, and I will spend my Black dollars where they are respected and welcomed--not just when someone gets caught in the act. Let this be a reminder that equal treatment matters and that every customer deserves respect--regardless of race.

The nail shape is exactly how I like them, and he checked in several times to make sure that the length, color, and shape were what I wanted. The space is very bright, open, and clean. It felt quite glamorous-- truly like taking some time to be pampered. I'll definitely be back! They were VERY busy, so I suggest making an appointment.

I am autistic so going to the salon isn't my favorite thing but Andrews and everyone at Star Studio accommodate my needs without me feeling guilty. Andrews takes the best care of my hair and scalp - giving me the vivid colors I crave without driving my psoriasis crazy! They are also very respectful that I can only repeated a few salon visits a year and do not pressure me to return. My most recent visits involved a big chop to a pixie cut and I adore it!!! I've always had long hair and I trusted Andrews and Star Studio to take me into the land of short hair with skill and confidence.

Update after owner response:…read more I want to clarify a few things in response to the owner's reply, because it does not reflect what happened. The conversation that led to this situation was not started by me. While I was in the chair, the discussion had already shifted into conspiracy topics. A client then came in and brought up the Israeli prime minister and his cancer, making comments expressing happiness about it. The tone of the conversation included laughter and engagement from others around, which made it extremely uncomfortable to sit through. As a Jewish customer, I felt put in a very difficult position, especially being mid-service and unable to simply step away. The direction of the conversation is what led me to speak up and say that I'm Jewish and that I didn't agree, even though I was genuinely nervous to do so. When I said that, there was a visible shift, people were caught off guard, apologized, and said they don't hate Jews, they "just hate him." That does not change what was said or how it came across in that moment. The owner was the one cutting my hair and was part of the conversation. When I said I needed to leave, I was already overwhelmed and in a state of panic. My hair was not finished, and I had to ask for clips to be removed so I could go. I then found myself at a locked door and had to wait to be let out, which added to the distress of the situation. I do want to be clear that I did verbally express myself strongly toward the end. I'm not denying that. My reaction came after everything I had just experienced, not before. The owner's response mentions creating a safe environment and staff feeling uncomfortable. I did not create that situation, I reacted to it. I was the one sitting in the chair while this conversation was happening around me. After I spoke up, the response included references to "Jewish support groups" and comparisons between Jewish people and the queer community that felt dismissive and out of place given the context.

I was looking for a stylist that was close and convenient. I know an awesome stylist in Ann Arbor…read morethat I was going to, but I just couldn't afford her any longer, so I decided to look for a more affordable alternative closer to home (Ypsilanti). I first found the salon in an online search, and I thought it looked really interesting because they use organic, natural products. Then I noticed the reviews were great, so I scheduled an appointment online. As it got closer to the date, I thought I'd check to see if there were any openings, and I was fortunate to get an appointment for the next day with Malissa. Malissa is wonderful. She first asked what I had in mind for a cut, and since I'm clueless as to what looks good on me, I asked for her opinion, which she offered and I agreed with her. I go to sit down at the hair washing station, and I noticed how COMFORTABLE it is. It's at a little higher level, so I don't feel like I have to hold myself up to keep my neck from hurting. Then, as she's washing my hair, she starts massaging my head, which felt great! We get back to the seat, and as she's cutting my hair, we chat. She is very easy to talk with, very informative on her products, the layout of her salon, etc. It was completely comfortable chatting with her. I LOVE the haircut and style she gave me. I told her how much I don't like to use product in my hair, so she styles me the way I would myself. As she turns me around to look at the back, I realize how much I love this cut. I barely had to say two words, and she figured out what looked good on me, and what I would like. I have to say, I think she's amazing. I'm looking forward to my next visit. Awesome cut at an affordable price!

I just got my first cut from Sam and it's so lovely. This was my first visit to BGS and by good…read morefortune I was matched with wonderful Sam. Couldn't be happier with her work. The phone system (in which you don't automatically get a person but rather wait for someone to call you back) is a drag. Admittedly I got a call back very quickly, but for the price I would assume/hope I could call and get a person. Small issue and wouldn't keep me from going back. What will keep me from a second visit, though, is the price. I do like my haircut and I'd probably pay to have a coffee with Sam as much as have my hair done by her, but my very basic cut/clean-up trim was $165. (I stupidly didn't ask about the cost when I made my appt - my bad). For a hole-in-the-wall Ypsilanti shop (as opposed to a salon in NYC, Chicago) this seems exorbitant for a simple trim/cut. Maybe I'm out of date, but it's out of my budget for sure. Bummer bc Sam is the best.
